If I arrived on a long international flight I would have rather taken the subway as carrying your luggage up and down all those stairs would be a pain in the butt.

Not to nitpick, but we Long Islanders pronounce it as "ron KON kuh muh" not "ron kon COE mah" Source: I've either lived or worked in towns on the Ronkonkoma branch my entire life.
You can also take the 6 train from any stop to the E at 51st and Third although you walk for six or seven minutes between trains. Also, many of the 6 train stops only have stairs and it is a little hard to take your bag down the stairs. You get off the E at Lefferts Blvd and there is a five minute walk to the AirTrain.
I wonder how many tourists try to do this and end up lost, and ubering to their final destination. It’s a very complex system for anyone to try at first glance.
6:05 just wanted to clarify - so if you’re coming from JFK to Manhattan and arriving in Penn Station on a weekday between 4-8pm, this is NOT peak time right?
