How to Read Steelhead Water with Scott Baker McGarva

When I used to guide for steelhead, the number one question I heard was about reading water. Some rivers can be challenging to figure out... Most of us know each run has a head, body and tail, but how do we really break it down so we know how to fish within each of those sections?

Thank you so much for sharing your valuable knowledge in reading water to put the odds in my favor in catching a steelhead. Or two! From a new friend in fishing. Ernest

Love this video. Lots of good info in there. Scott taught me to fly cast back in a class he taught in like 1993/94 out back of Berry's tackle. He was always great to talk to and very friendly and knowledgable. Helped me out a lot. I literally know how to fly cast because of him. Beautifully put together video too. Nice work.

I work a run from the bottom up 100% of the time. I pull steelies out the back door one after the other, working up the run, and not upsetting the entire thing by catching the first one at the top then fighting it down through the run. 10x more fish.... and yes i am nymphing, because i like to catch a ton of fish.

Oh yeah, I just want to say , incredible information, top 👏 notch 👌 quality, time and energy and more time, is quality, this is by far , epic details of what you're looking for, altogether, its incredible how steelhead do setup in such skinny water as they move up into those locations, I realize its a lot of time and respect, to reach that goal and spiritual success in life. Just remember respect what you love, give back more then you take. Epic quality. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m the opposite I cut my teeth on the fly and have since switched to a centerpin. Much more fun to fight the fish without drag and really allows a lot more complexity where everything from the angle you hold your rod to the subtle shades of jig coloring, to the shape of the float has an impact on your catch. It’s a ton of fun to tweak and tweak and then figure out that the switch to a different shot pattern makes the difference between a skunk and a banner day. Of course fly fishing has this aspect too but I think to a lesser degree. For me the flies generally are reserved for the inland fish.

Pfttt...why make fun of a fly fisherman using an indicator. There's different ways of catching a fish using a different fly fishing techniques, nymphing being one of them. You can use any different approach fly fishing if it works for you CATCHING many fish, it works for you PERIOD
@shorecasted9295

Right? That’s what I always try to explain to folks when I throw my weighted treble but they never listen. It catches fish though, PERIOD.

Agreed! We run indicators for Westcoast run chrome and is extremely effective for side-drifting/ boon-dogging. In fact just today we out fished the traditional swing with indicator!

Sooo you make fun of people who use an "indicator"(bobber) but you throw a rubber worm with a bobber the size of a donkey turd! I make fun of anyone uses above her to fish!

Well generally most fly fishermen move up river and most float fishermen work their way down . People get too choked these days. We should all be friends and help each other like we do within our own small circles . If we all mutually respect and love the fish then we should work together to preserve the resource and help it grow
