I stopped freezing bearings to drop into hot cases because the bearing only shrinks about .0001", and the cold bearing will suck the heat out of the cases causing the bore to shrink on the bearing faster, especially if it is crooked. Not freezing the bearing gives you more time to drop the bearing in a hot hole. Also, before you put in the shafts, you can heat the cases in an over no higher than 350 deg F., and drop all new bearings in the cases. If you start them off straight enough, you can actually hear them hit bottom. But you usually end up tapping some to the bottom of the bore as you burn your fingers on the hot cases. :) I bought a little over for the shop.

I'm sure Brad knows this but using an extension to the torque wrench like that changes the torque values and they need to be recalculated. If putting the extension perpendicular to the wrench you don't have to bother with that since the effective length is not altered.
@barnescycle
@barnescycle 2 года назад
Some times those gears bind on test run because you need both case halves for stability to whoever maybe wondering or having that issue. You may also have to center the crank is the cases with a filler gauge and rubber mallet, the crankshaft may not roll smoothly with new bearing but thus comes the heat cycle to break the engine in. Yamaha shift forks make this job harder than it should be because they are one solid peice unlike Suzuki.
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 2 года назад
Bearings should roll smoothly, even when new. There is not break in process for bearings, only a break down process. In fact, I am willing to bet there is no real need for a a heat cycle or any other type of break in process for 2-stroke engines. If put smaller gas 2-stroke engines on my dyno, and beat the living tar out of them right out of the box after being jetted. All I want to do is get the ring seated to the cylinder wall all the way around in as short of time as possible, and that means high cylinder pressures to do that, (where the most torque is at). Out of the 10's of thousands of engines and top end kits I have built, (with good detail), I have never had an engine failure due to a improper break in. If your new bearings are binding, something is not put together correctly.

I stumbled across this video yesterday, although I have watched quite a number of videos from Jay. I would just like to say that I think this is probably the best engine rebuild vid that I've seen! It's absolutely superb! A wee quick question as I'm going to be starting project YZ 250 build, after vapour blasting the engine cases etc. what do you use to protect them against corrosion? Brilliant video, keep up the great work! Scott
