When Isaiah asked Rob to hook up battery and Rob responded with "I'm your electrical guy" I started busting out laughing because the wiring madness rob had laid out all over the engine bay of the 3-rotor while he had it running popped in my head, lmfao.

First and foremost, those guys really killed it, second, I do want to appreciate that Rob got convinced about RX8 at the end of this video, which is a lot TBH
The youtube algorithms must be acting up cause i did too. I had no clue he was on that show. Never seen an episode but still had no clue who rob was or how he got onto any of what he does. Been following him for two years for the rotary stuff but had no clue untill yesterday when i saw an interview with him talking about the show then one about outtakes and him wetting the bed lol

The RX8 videos are already my favourite on the channel. Watching the crazy AWD RX7 is fine, but this is actual stuff that 99% of the rotary owning audience can actually relate to and achieve themselves! Personally I'd love to see a hacked together supercharger or turbo setup on this, or for Rob to get a rival RX8 to build the ultimate RX8 setup on.
Whilst I'm older and have a little experience on cars, this is the stuff I love to see. Why? Because it introduces/motivates 16..20 year olds to start working on cheap cars they can afford, and then they can go on to do awesome stuff.
I mean it is the “superior chassis” I’ve always liked the RX8. I never had a issue with it other then them not making a turbo model. The Mazdaspeed bumper and kit are all you really need to make them look amazing. I’m glad you guys did this Isaiah.
I'm rebuilding a small engine myself and I can attest to the importance of just taking things apart and buying twice as many seals and springs as you think you will need.
The moment Rob takes off in the 8 was something really special. I don't know what it is, but - Universally - there's more to that connection than we realise.

Honestly, thanks for these videos showing us, that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to rebuild or work on a rotary engine. Something most rotary shops won’t show or tell you, just to take more money from our pockets. This really gives me a lot of confidence to be able to do it myself, if my fc RX7 decides to blow.
I love the way you guys posted this too 2 videos that got to the point not 1st video we pull the motor 2nd we tear down the motor 3rd we rebuild 4th put motor in a start 5th test thank you guys
I keep coming back to the RX8. I fell in love with them driving one years back and it's on my list to buy next. I just wish I had even a regular garage to be able to do my own rebuild. Apartment life sucks for that.
@@Token_Black_Guy I think the 3d printers all over my place kinda prevent me from having enough space to even do that. But my dining room table does have a built in lazy susan... so I could spin a motor around on it... don't give me ideas.
@@vaerontv print me some A pillars for my Ae86 But I agree get some space first! I had a couple Rx7z and a 04 rx8 The 8 was super fun! Had Ac and really nice suspension! You can slam the gas through any corner and plant to the ground! The throttle response was amazing Yeah it’s n/a and slow compared to a turbo fc or fd but man they so much fun to drive and slide around!
When my Renesis S2 was cracked opened at 48k the rotor housing chrome was pristine. three oil injectors reall do the work vs older two or one. Only thing was there was so much carbon from previous owners putting in synthetic oils during oil change.
@@aserta wankel by nature does not have enough time to burn all the fuel and air mixture. It also has to throw in oil for lubrication on the seals spinning along with rotors. Synthetic oils are made to resist heat and not combust like fuel. So they leave a lot of unburnt deposits inside the rotor housing, exhaust port, and on the rotor itself. They will seize the seals in place and prevent getting good compression, attract fuel to the carbon build up and have hot spot detonation, and they can build up on the side exhaust ports of Renesis, catch and break the side seals, killing the engine.

i watched this when it came out, bought an rx8 last august. an 09 6sp. it has been one of the most fun daily drivers. i came to rewatch this to plan a refresher build. but at 110k she runs like a dream. superior chassis gang
Hey Rob. Im an automotive high school teacher and I love teaching the kids about these engines. If u ever wanna come to NJ and bring that rx7 AWD u got. That would be nice lol
His Dad accidentally dropped a rotor on his head as a child. He was never quite the same after that. They said he couldn't comprehend shapes with more than 3 sides for the first 20 years of his life.
What I love (and people with bottomless bank accounts probably hate) is that you get to the nitty gritty. Not many are nearly as thorough as you are of showing every last detail. I’m trying to learn, andi is almost half of the community edits most of the details out, and the other almost half just pays to get it done and you get to hear a cold start (oooohh), and then there’s you and a few others. Corny maybe, but down right engine dirty..definitely. Thanks
My first RX-7 was also a GXL, bought it with a blown motor for $200. Then found another one with an automatic transmission with a blown transmission but a Mazda Reman engine for $250. Then proceeded to swap all the best parts into the GXL and I had a running driving 5 speed car for
Definitely appreciate this video! My first car was an rx8 and it went through 2 motors because of the coolant seals. At the time it was under warranty and I didn’t understand cars that much but recently I’ve really been daydreaming about restoring one for nostalgia. Thank you for making this video!
Thank you guys for putting this video together! I’m planning on picking up a cheap RX8 and this video really helped! I am mechanically inclined but rotaries are brand new to me. Excited to try them out!
Love watching the interaction between Rob & Isaiah...So very happy Rob has dug in to help Isaiah...One of my most favorable channels to watch...Rotary engines forever!

@@drkhancock14 I'm in the EU, cheapest is like 2500 eur without discussing the price. Body is mint too, still cheap. But I simply don't have a place to keep the car for long periods of time or the tools.
@@MiGujack3 and you will need that space :( lol. I still say if you have the money and the desire, you can always back out later and turn around and sell it. You might lose some euros but the experience will be great fun/frustration that you will never forget.
I like the fact that Isaiah tryna keep it chill for the regular car ppl with rotaries or just getting in to them this was a pretty informative video especially about all the seals and little divets
@@F3Ibane With Rob getting into machining, and eventually doing his own billets, I think there's hope for the Renesis. Two major issues need to be solved, how the ports breathe and the cooling issue that melts seals. Rob is already messing with how ports breath on one of the other rotaries. The cooling issue would be solved with better designed parts, hence why manufacturing custom parts from billets is important here. The Renesis design has potential, but that potential isn't met due to manufacturing corner cutting from Mazda, such as not grinding out better ports for better airflow characteristics, or the cooling issue that could be fixed with a more efficient cooling design. If Rob, the team, and probably some helping hands that actually studied thermodynamics and engineering, can produce a modified Renesis design that fixes the issues, think about what other fringe experiments Rob could get into that're mostly untouched in the rotary world. Stuff like what Paul Lamar was into and some of the stuff like what the person who runs the Pattakon website is into. If Rob is willing to dip his feet into the waters of fringe experiments with design, things could get super interesting.
My first car was an 87 rx7 turbo II.I feel in love with the rotary. I wish there was youtube back then. It was a insane how much it cost to pay someone back in that day. Thank you for the videos so often. Loving all the content. Please keep it up.
@robdahm you and Isiah have completely converted me from running a V8 in my drag car build into a rotary, fanatic!!! I am learning so much and want to share this knowledge again with others. Keep up the great work. Warm regards from Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
It took Mazda over 3 months to replace the motor in my 04 RX8. It only had 29,000 when the coolant seals went bad. BTW I think people would love more of this type of video from you Rob. Great job guys! I had fun watching
If you have the space, and can rent or borrow a car for the meanwhile. It's genuinely worth doing this yourself. I wouldn't trust non JP technicians anyways. They never get it right, because almost none of them are trained to do it. You know, when you've landed with someone who was invested into, sent by the company to JP and got educated by their techs, because the whole job takes less than eating cake.
@@aserta it's funny you mention that they never get it right. I don't own the car anymore and this was quite some time ago.. but after about 10k miles motor started failing again. I ended up buying a Mazda 3 speed.... One of the best little cars I ever owned!
What an epic rebuild! I enjoyed it. Funny enough Car Throttle featured Robbie at SEMA once and shortly after they did a RX8 rebuild that turned out epic. I am really glad to see it run, good luck Isaiah and i hope it gets a snail attached to it soon!
I think the best part of these is that, while a little complex to assemble/disassemble rotor wise, the general size/weight of the rotary makes it feasible for a dude in a not large garage to tear down and rebuild one without cramming up the space. Put it on a shop table and go to work!
He used a fucking auto screwer instead of proper tool to put it together and you ask about seals XD it's fun cheap project for them, designated to be blown up eventually
@@versedi The battery torque wrenches can be adjusted to a specific torque. He did that. Then tightened it again with a proper torque wrench. What are you so mad about?
So much free knowledge on your channel, id love to build a rotary engine in the future and I feel confident about it after seeing a lot of the content you guys have made... Appreciate it
The fact that you guys are able to spend all this time doing what you are passionate about is awesome. I dont even enjoy working on cars but I enjoy watching the journey all of you are on. But before I continue I want to take the time to tell you about my sponsor Keeps....
Currently getting my Airframe and Powerplant license, I've fallen in love with the wankel engine ever since learning about it in school. I'm determined to learn how rebuild/overhaul these engines and this gives me a place to start! Thank you guys
Good job, this seems easier to work on then my 4 cylinder, now I want to buy one that doesn't run with fairly low miles and start tinkering with it and rebuild it. I could do this, may take longer than you guys but definitely seems obtainable. Good job you guys!
Great job guys! I hope there is more rx8 Content, the rx-8 rotors are amazing, I have seen NA 20b make 500 on them. the ticking noise is the SSV valve assembly, there is a newer version available that stops the ticking. Perhaps you guys did off camera but the SSV and the APV's get built up with carbon, best to clean all that too.
I can relate to Isaiah revving that thing up! I finished my most recent 13B-MSP rebuild and immediately threw my tools and suitcase in the car and drove it 400 miles to Tennessee for a business meeting.
Please, please keep the videos coming! I love seeing Isaiah's RX-8 resurrrected; this series is just as great as the other stuff you do with the fire-breathing turbo monsters.
LoL, after watching several of robs rotary and rx8 videos... I feel i could get glossy eyed and wrench on a rotary as well... Its like a two stroke motorcycle... Light weight...revs high...goes fast...requires a steady eye to make sure things stay running primo. Youve convinced me to get a rx8...dahm you Rob...
