Very informative. This is something I've been dreading for some time now. I initially wanted a reman unit, but they're impossibly difficult to source for the SVX. So, I must resort to rebuilding it myself. I have the kit and boots handy, but I'm still waiting on inner and outer tie rods, which apparently I must source from a 2003 VW Eurovan....since mine are NLA. This is probably gonna be a week long project for me since I'm replacing all the bushings with polys at the same time. I gotta say, even after watching your video and a couple others, I'm still not confident in my abilities, but it's what I'm left with. So wish me luck as I applaud you in your successful attempt. Keep up the good work. It's videos like these that help better prepare the rest of us.

Thank you so much and good luck to you. The worst that will happen is that it will leak which is incredibly possible with a reman unit anyway, so its worth a short trying it yourself! :D

Nice one! I'm about to do a ucf10 rack and these are soo similar. Definitely helps me out thanks mate! Only thing I would do differently is install the inner seal to the shaft first and the install it using the shaft?

Cool video dude if I need bearings or seals I go to a bearing and seal shop they normally have what I need and alot cheaper. Cheers from nz got my sub

good idea. usually rack and pinions suck. and the amount of time to take it out put it back becomes a pain. before i recall pulling out a defective reman unit 4 times for a customer before i got one that worked and it didnt even last long.

Brilliant vid quality and good humour unlike lots of crap here Ps the bearing can be sourced from any where that sells engineering supplys at half the cost of oem or scare parts store just measure it

I have found a better was to wrap the rack gears. I use heavy packing (Clear) tape the long way. Leave a couple inches of lead tape, twist to make the journey easier. On my XJS rack the piston,nylon seal is split on a angle already. Yours might have a relief valve somewhere. Remember this is Power Assist. Not a Hydraulic cylinder. Less beating and more pushing or pressing. I saw the lead-in of your electrical tape was all busted up. It snagged. This in not good. The good part is the seal (it’s new) might be able to handle it. We all use the hot water thing to expand (Nylon) the seals. Funny that you lubed the outer part of the rack, this can be done later, when installing the seal. I’m 60 and enjoy seeing young folks working on their car. 👍

Thank you for showing this process. I am in the middle of doing my first on a Dodge Stealth. i wonder if you did not need to compress the nylon seal. I am guessing it was compressed too much and failed to seal. In time it should remember it's original size and expand slightly at least I hope for your sake. Thanks again.

you do need to compress the nylon seal. its been 2 years now and the rack is still performing well

I wanna rebuild the rack on my ‘89 but I don’t know how to tell if I have an early or late 89 and whether or not I have the speed sensitive rack. Are racks interchangeable across all models and years? Can I convert from one to the other? I’ve also heard fitment for poly rack bushings are hot or miss even the ones from good brands. Since you showed that certain racks have different diameters I’m wondering if that is the reason. What bushings did you use?

For many cars NEW are near impossible to come by. Of course rebuilding it yourself sucks and takes a long time. So far my rebuild is holding up :D

@@PoorManMods all the fools commenting stuff like this probably dont own mk3 supras. the only way to get a reman in this country is via detroit axle..im rocking an 89 turbo and called up EVERYONE to get reman but i decided to do it myself thanks to you and boost rodeo. keep up the good work

wouldnt you want to soak the seals in power steering fluid? or is it the mk3 is atf for p/s fluid as another mk3 owner this helps me know it can be done and i will be doing it cause mines puking🤣😭

Hi. please help me with a question. This steering rack has it's own oil wich doesn't comunicate with the atf? I mean, where you unbolted the two big nuts with the screw, there it was some kind of oil?

Do you just run the stock 1JZ pump? Do you just get a custom line that goes from 1JZ to your USDM rack? I have an 88 also, and doing a 1JZ VVTi swap.

Stock 1j pump. Im using a drift motion braided stainless line now that runs from the pump to the rack.

Quick question! Boost Rodeo claims a spline socket is necessary for removing the pinion gear. I see you were able to remove it without one. However is seems you were using one @32:40 (if I'm not mistaken). Would you say this tool is mandatory for the job?

Im not sure if our racks were different or not, but I did buy the splined socket but its not necessary. The only time I ever used was at 32:40 just to move the rack back and forth but if youre careful you can do it without that special socket.

Is there a seal at the end near the gear box on the rack gear? I have a leak at the end near the gear box where the teeth are on the rack gear. It’s not a major leak but the boot is wet. I took the boot off and I didn’t see any fluid dripping out, I’m trying to figure out if there is a seal or which seal might be wearing out at the end near the gear box.

No need to compress, there is a lead-in in the tube. This will compress it. Use ATF! Go slow. Great video.👍

You didnt torque doen with the crow's foot properly You can look it up but you need to be roughly 90 degrees with the crows foot. Not straight. You just overtorqued

Just started doing this job on my 86.5 rack, and realized that my reseal kit is missing the upper pinion seal, which is the worst one on my rack 🙄

@@PoorManMods just finished and it’s working perfect, not leaking either thankfully. Btw, to compress the Teflon seal on the piston, I just wrapped electrical tape around the seal tightly (adhesive side out) and let it sit for 10 minutes and it worked mint.
