Have to congratulate you on a superbly presented video series! So well done! Your one camera shoot with no edits demonstrate the wonderful camera work & well planned choreographed set ups in the videos. Also the additional voice over taking over when you pause on camera works very well. I recently purchased a Neumann TLM 102 and it has a beautiful natural quality & gives that wonderful upfront Neumann signature presence, and they're all still made in Germany! The quality of your microphones & company extends to your video presentations. 😎👍

Did I see any cut in this?! Hell no, one take! And even voiceovers during set ups were perfectly alligned with video. I haven't seen such a good tutorials IN MY LIFE. I suppose if Neumann makes best mics in the world, tutorials must follow :) I love that you showed product from your competitor and didn't do that to show how bad it is, but just to show a difference. Back in a day, when I just started, I took a loan and bought just 4 mics - pair of small condencer Oktavas (for stereo), Shure SM57 and TLM102. And to be honest, I could save some money and buy just TLM102. This mic is my absolutely, most beloved mic I use in almost any mono situation. I tried many different ones and always came back to Neumann. It helped me rocord dozens af audiobooks, solo isntrument and vocals. Used only Octavas a few times for stereo and that's it. Best price/performance mic ever.

Give me more! Throw that TLM103 on a guitar amp! It is magic on a amp. Also, I put it in a drum room at another studio. When he solo the drums back, he turned to me and laughed. He said "The TLM103 alone, could be used as the drum track, and it was just a room mic". I of course agreed already knowing the power of this mic. Notice he says "Quiet room". He is not joking. You think your home studio is quiet? Wait until you try this mic. You will find out if you can hear cars driving by or the phone ring and such.

Great little series on recording acoustic guitars. Thanks for all the tips, ideas and considerations. The guitar in this video seems to be one of Larrivee's larger models. Great Canadian made guitars that sound and play great for a relatively reasonable price. I'm using a Larrivee OM-03 with all mahogany back, top and sides, and an ebony fingerboard. Picked it up used for $650!!! Paired with a Neumann it should record just right. Thanks again Georg Neumann. :0)

This series of videos is incredibly useful and well produced, but please eliminate the annoying high-pitch sounds when the microphone names appear on the video. They sound like artifacts in the audible range of the acoustic guitar, and they are completely maddening for anyone listening with headphones. Thank you very much for the wonderful videos. Also, remember that RU-vid audio is encoded in the lossy format of AAC at around 128 kbps, so we are not hearing the true beautiful fidelity of these amazing Neumann microphones. But they still sound wonderful.

Before the video: As I just ordered a Neumann TLM 103 to up my home-recording-game these videos are an absolute treasure... thx for making the effort =) ... After the video: after this one I'm sure, that I picked right. I decided for the 103 over the 107 because in certain reviews it appeared to me as if the 103 would pick up more separately the different strings combining to a chord, while with the 107 the bass seemed too dominant and overall the chords more sounded like a single tone instead of a composition of tones... you know what I mean :D Anyway, really looking forward to experiment with this awesome mic... And to hear you say it's great for vocals, too... yeah, that was consoling :D what would a singer/songwriter be without a voice :D

This was fantastic series! I have experiemented a bit now, and also since bought some new compact cardiods. I would love to learn about using 2 mics (and different 2nd mic). For example, I love the lower bridge position with my condenser TLM 102 and my matched compact condenser at ~12th fret in XY, but I get (a) a weird echo / phasing now (when I play back), and (b) lots of strong noise. Your videos are the best I have seen
@PurpleMusicProductions
@PurpleMusicProductions Год назад
That is interesting, because I was thinking of trying the same thing. I would like to follow this thread to see how it resolves.
@August_Hall
@August_Hall Год назад
@@PurpleMusicProductions i did some more tests. I found two things 1. Do the lower bridge as a mono track and it sat in centre in mix and was ok, but inguess some might want another mono for panning. 2. I have in built mics (trinity k&k) with external pre amp, so I just did a direct input and it sounds great. As such I did this method and got a stereo and mono recorded at the same time as XY stereo and the internal mic offered a different sound. Overall, I might use the bridge condenser because I want less finger movement sounds. And so double tracked the bridge condenser and moved my XY stereos a bit back and lower so it was more supporting in the layering.
@PurpleMusicProductions
@PurpleMusicProductions Год назад
@@August_Hall OK I see. Thanks for sharing that information. It seems like recording XY mic recording can be a little more complicated than presented, so expirementing will be much needed.
@August_Hall
@August_Hall Год назад
@@PurpleMusicProductions no worries. Its wider but not as wide as I had expected. I think for future ill do condenser bridge and my internal mic at same time, pan, and EQ differently as a foundation. Use XY as my "doubled" track centred. I forgot to say a 3rd test I did was make 2 tracks for each mic so left mic to track 1 and left to track 2 and eq differently and sounded good, too. I also put one cardioid on bridge and one pointed at neck between 5th and 12 th 6inches away and that did not turn out good at all.

I like the dynamic best. Why a vocal dynamic mic though? The SM57 is a pretty popular choice for acoustic guitar, in certain situations, ribbon mics too. It's a bit unfair to be all like "well, this is a dynamic vocal mic, it's not really designed for this stuff, not like these condenser mics over here..."
@EricStPierre
@EricStPierre 6 лет назад
Remember their trying to sell their LDC & SDC mics's not Shure dynamic mics. Great content nonetheless. Even better than your typical SM57 dynamic would be a Shure SM7B or Telefunken M80. LDC's & SDC's have their place though.

Thanks for the hard work and clear, fast paced demos. I've recorded and mixed a lot of acoustic and acoustic/electric music in small rooms over the past 50 years. I agree with virtually every word you said and it was validating to know I've mostly been doing it right for the bulk of my career. But I have a question. In the part 1 and 2 videos on how to record guitar, you aptly demonstrated that pointing a mic right at the sound hole generally yields suboptimal results. Yet in this video on selecting the right mic, all were pointed almost directly at the sound hole. The differences among the mics were still easy to detect, but wouldn't using the better placement you taught us yield even better results? I'm honestly not trying to be critical or hyper technical. I'm hoping, and expecting, that there is a probably a very good reason and I'll be quite fine if I'm being dull and missing the obvious . I recently retired and am starting to record myself playing guitar for the first time ever. I have lots of good mics and real world experience, but as a producer/engineer/drummer/keyboard player who is finally getting comfortable enough playing guitar to entertain recording my efforts, I feel like I've forgotten everything and am starting over. I'm unaccustomed to hearing myself play guitar and am hating everything. It's not unlike most people's reaction to hearing a recording of their voice played back for the first time. Most people hate that moment and are shocked at how their voice sounds outside their head. I'm sure I'll get more confident, but I'm having trouble being objective at this stage. Thanks again for the videos. I really am enjoying them and trying not to be a pain but the question is niggling at me so I had to ask it.
@GeorgNeumannGmbH

Good observation, Steve. :) We indeed aimed all mics in this video to the 12th fret of the guitar. But as a matter of the camera perspective this is not always clearly visible. We were aware of that matter during the shooting, but as we wanted to provide best possible audio quality we decided not to sacrifice mic positions.

It's just a matter of opinion. But I feel that the model TLM 103 has too much personality. I rather to hear the TLM 102, because you can mixed the way you like. The TLM 102 seems to be more flexble. The TLM 103 forces you to sound the way It's built. It feels that way to me. But, no doubt, to excelent mics. (If I could, I would by all models) :)

@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 8 лет назад
It is difficult to get good results if you want to record vocals and guitar together at the same time with only one microphone. You would need to find a mic position that records both at a good volume as you cannot change this in the post process. Thus you cannot get optimal results as you cannot place the microphone to the best position for vocals and guitar.

I have a question..while recording should i set the track to mono or to stereo.. I mean is there anty difference if a record in mono or stereo if i only have one mic¿¿
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 4 года назад
Basically it is not so significant how you set the recording track. With mono, the mic signal is recorded on one track. With stereo, the same one signal is recorded on both channels of the stereo track. The advantage of recording a mono signal on a mono track is that especially in larger projects it is clear at first glance that there is only a mono signal in the track.

Thank you for your patience. Although often stated, the feedback resistance of condenser microphones in general is not inferior to dynamic microphones. Important design features are e.g. consistency of the polar pattern. A well designed condenser stage microphone like KMS 104 /105 is comparable to good dynamic ones while providing higher clarity on monitors due to its improved high frequency resolution.

For the microphone comparisons we indeed used identical preamps and AD converters of excellent quality and neutral character, with identical settings. The intention of this video is to demonstrate the character of the different microphones. Therefore the rest of the signal chain was chosen to be as neutral and consistent as possible.

Hi, thanks for your interest in our tutorial! All mics presented in our videos have been recorded with the same high-quality preamp / AD-converter combination, known for its clear and neutral sound character. And to let you hear the sound of the mics only, no post processing is applied. Keep recording and have a great weekend!

Can't say louder, but with a bit more highs. Maybe thats why it seems louder.

+Georg Neumman GmbH, which mic preamps were used? Best wishes. Bernardo Neves
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 8 лет назад
Hi Bernando, we used identical preamps / ADCs for all mics here to make the comparisons as fair as possible. In order to concentrate on the character of the mics we have chosen preamps which are known for their neutral and low noise sound. Please stay tuned. More tutorials will follow soon. In the mean time, feel free to visit our new website www.neumann.com/homestudio/en/

My question is can you record a guitar and vocal at the same time or do you need 2 mics?
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 5 лет назад
Hi! It is difficult to get good results if you want to record vocals and guitar together at the same time with only one microphone. You would need to find a mic position that records both at a good volume as you cannot change this in the post process. Thus you cannot get optimal results as you cannot place the microphone to the best position for vocals and guitar. We hope, this helps! Have a great day!

+Wesley Smith I don't have a guitar on me, but it looks like he's playing a "E" chord form, and moving it up between A and B while letting the high strings ring open. Just find a low EMajor chord, then move it up to A and then B. It's a fairly common thing in a lot of songs.

All I can say is that I must be totally tone deaf. It doesn't matter if I listen to the tracks of this entire microphone comparison series or if I listen to tracks on other videos that have EQ'ed or compressed. They all sound the same to me. :-(
@gregsimmons1709

Maybe you’re not ‘tone deaf’ but just need to spend some time learning how to listen? I say this sincerely and not in a mocking or sarcastic manner. The differences on the guitars in these videos are not enormous, and the untrained ear would have trouble picking them - especially without the guidance of the narrator! The other ‘problem’ with these videos is that the musician, the guitar, the room, the engineering and the visuals are all so good that it’s easy to get drawn into the music and lose track of the sound. Sometimes we need to hear a bad recording (which doesn’t exist in these videos) to get a reference. A good start would be to use some high quality headphones, close your eyes so you cannot see the video, and just focus entirely on the sound. I also find a good exercise I used to give my students is to try and listen in intently to everything BUT the music. Try to listen in for sounds in the background and so on. That process actually, and accidentally, let’s you find details in the sound itself, which is part of the learning curve of developing better listening skills rather than just trying to ‘hear’ things.

To be fair, recognizing subtle differences in sound quality is an acquired skill that takes time and practice to develop. The more you work with audio in a critical capacity, the more readily you'll be able to pick out minute variations in timbre and tone. Even with my relatively poor hearing, I've learned to hear and recognize differences in sound quality.
@idahocharley
@idahocharley 4 года назад
@@gregsimmons1709 I hear the differences- but I also walk away less critical of what I am hearing having observed the differences in these mics and that they are within a very small margin. IOW's there is no need to get to annul for us annul types. Thinking if I just had this or that mic than I would sound so much better. The guitar sounded good with every mic.
