YES! The PHASE switch. Brilliant tip and one I haven't seen in any other tutorials. I learned this lesson quite by accident when recording an announcer I worked with regularly. One day he complained that the headphones made him sound like he had a head cold. I checked the settings and equipment. Everything was dialed in normally, the processing, the mic, the room, the cans, everything was the same, EXCEPT the phase switch had somehow gotten toggled. As the engineer, he sounded the same to me regardless of the phase, but even a half cycle can befuddle the brain when the sound returns to the vocal performer's ears. A few times (over many decades) I purposely flipped the phase and the voice talent felt it sounded better in their head, but very rarely. Perhaps they had colds at the time? Another video full of great advise. Thanks.

Great content! There's a lot of crucial information and it's great to review things with a different approach! And I just need to ask: I watched this video yesterday and today I kept my mind all day thinking what's the consequence to leave the pop shield parallel to the microphone capsule? Ps.: I own a TLM103 and it was a game changer in my homestudio! Greetings from Brazil ✌
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 8 лет назад
Hi Gustavo! Positioning the pop shield parallel to the capsule may cause sound reflections in the upper frequencies which in turn cause comb filter effects. As a result, sibilants often appear somewhat artificial. Depending on the pop shield material and its distance to the mic, this may or may not be audible. So, to be safe, it's a good idea to minimize such effects by angleing the pop shield.

Like so many others I wish to say how much I like the tutorial by Geert Verdickt and Neumann. Very well done! I knew already the videos on how to record an acoustic guitar but now I 'stumbled' across this recording vocals triptych. Reason I was searching again on the internet was my recent acquisition of a (second hand) U87Ai. I will hook it up to a Focusrite ISA One. My studio space is a small attic room which I treated acoustically. To avoid further reflection I also use a reflection filter screen behind the microphone (CAD Audio). Do I have to adopt/change my recording technique because of this set up? I think my sound benefits from using the reflection filter. Or should I do without it; or even, because of the cardioid pattern used, put the reflection filter behind the singer?
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 6 лет назад
Hi, in good recording rooms with proper acoustical treatment isolation shields will most likely not improve the sound of your recordings. Worst case can be comb filter effects generated by reflections inside the screen, depending on the model in use. In untreated rooms though, the benefit of reducing unwanted reflections from the walls might dominate over these side effects. Most vocal screens are not perfectly absorbing, but reflecting sound a little as well. This reflections may color the mic’s sound. Using isolation shied might be an option, depending on the room. In rooms with good acoustic behavior (as the one we shoot our videos in) and no need to reduce unwanted room sound you often get better results when working without these screens. Try it out and trust your ears!
@McDungday
@McDungday 6 лет назад
Thank you very much for your lucid respons. I will certainly try more to find out the acoustic characteristics of my recording room.
