He has such a gentle and encouraging way of approaching his notes. What a treat to have an outside perspective during tracking! It’s like a vocal coaching and recording session mixed into one.

I like creating a piano double of the singers part if they cant get the pitch quite right, so that they have something to contrast it with and follow when they sing.

What I really like about him. He is really encouraging. We all need to be encouraged as musicians. I worked with an engineer years back that was also producing, helping and encouraging me. He would find out the notes I was singing on the guitar Then he would figure out other notes for harmonies. It changed my life forever. This was before the computer age so we had to get this as perfect as we could get it with out Antares pitch correction. When you have this level of teaching and experience it helps so much. Such great information.

My husband, #GeoffWorkman produced & engineered at least 28 triple platinum records and was infamous for his abrasive criticism, but he certainly got results. He would have the band hammer out the tunes perfectly in pre-production in order to waste as little time as possible in the actual studio.

Excellent video I also love how none of this has to do with gear or plugins to make you sound better. The general gist of the whole video is to encourage the best vocal performance out of a singer which at the end of the day gear can't provide you. Sounds great Graham!!!

Recording vocals at a peak of -3 is not recommended.. maybe in the old analogue days. But digital has a much lower noise floor .. plugins will work much better and sound much better if u have plenty of headroom to play with.. and things will generally be easier to mix if not recorded too hot. Around -9 peak would be perfect.

I also teach and coach vocals, I teach technique and then we apply that technique to the vocalists practice song and I coach them from there. I also use "sing with a smile" but instead of getting angry I ask the singer to absorb the meaning of the song and become that person as an actor would but then apply any aggression with relaxed but focused energy so as not to create to much tension that may cause obstruction in the voice pathway. This comes of course with much practice, experience and great breathing methodology. I also have the students write out the lyrics and I show them how to mark it up along the way. That being said, great video!

Good points! The amount of notes at the beginning could be a little overwhelming, I would think it’s probably better to let the vocalist do a few takes - keeping all takes - then doing a rough comp and then redoing just the parts that you have in your notes. It’s important to understand the technique of singing, things like breath control, voice placement etc. The ‘smile’ comment is spot on . But the most important statement here was the one about ‘empowerment’ which is what a vocal producers job is all about. Kudos!

What a crazy sequence of events. I start watching tutorials on production, learn enough to try and begin emulating my heroes, look around for who engineered one of my favorite Tom Waits albums; find out it’s Jacquire and go to youtube to start looking up interviews and tutorials, open my feed, and HERE HE IS, offering instruction an in-depth production course... ...that costs 3x more money than i have in my bank account. Because i am a working musician with bills to pay. Also, registration ends before i’ll have the chance to make that money, so i’ll NEVER get to see it. Sweet. Not asking for free, but that’s a lot of money to drop all at once. It looks like the course is worth it too. But it’s a daunting hump to get over.

I appreciate these kind of videos, but I really wish people would go more into hardware one would need for the singing (Preamp, amps, and routing etc.) and the way to set up many microphones into all the hardware. For two days now I have been trying to find a video and maybe I am looking for the wrong thing, but something that will answer, how many microphone preamps and amps do I need for a multi microphone home studio set up and how do I set it up so there is a track for each microphone using hardware and software.

Have non-stereo vocals ever been recorded using a combination of two mics simultaneously? For example, if I have one mic that sounds great on the lows and midrange but lacks brightness and have a second mic which lacks lows and mids but has a nice brightness, can’t I combine these two mics and place them next to each other while two using a separate track for each mic and then later play with the levels of both tracks and blend them in a way that flatters the singer/song the most?

I was surprised he recommended -3 dB for the headroom, given digital realm. I thought so many engineers suggest around -9 to -12 dB. That you’d have room for the mix, processing and the rest of the other tracks. Going to ask for Friday’s UAD Q&A.

Hi Graham, great stuff as usual. A curiosity: I think I hear that while recording you're already putting some effects on the voice. I always thought that best results come from takes done as flat as possible (besides the setting on the channel strip) and then effects would be added. How's your experience in regard to this? Thanks
@riktascale4
@riktascale4 5 лет назад
I think Graham would be hearing those effects to inspire him but, the effects would not be recorded.
@StevenJamesBoal
@StevenJamesBoal 5 лет назад
JaKe X Yeah those effects are to help make it feel as close to a finished product as possible. The recording would be dry and sent to reverb in protools for example.Then it can be changed later.
@JaKeXmusic
@JaKeXmusic 5 лет назад
@@StevenJamesBoal how can I make that happen? how do I set an effect to be heard while recording but without being recorded? thanks
@StevenJamesBoal
@StevenJamesBoal 5 лет назад
JaKe X I basically “send” the dry signal on a bus to an Aux bus and run your reverb on that. Instead of running your signal through your reverb and mixing the wet/dry you run the “wet” (only reverb) parallel to your dry signal and mix it in. Or you can just load your reverb plugin up on the channel - normally in DAWs plugins process the already recorded signal. Even if you’re using a hardware reverb it’s the same thought pattern. Record dry straight to your DAW and send it from there to FX, then return onto another stereo channel. Hope this helps!

How many “takes” should you have or how many are an exceptional norm for vocal takes.
@StevenJamesBoal
@StevenJamesBoal 5 лет назад
J Turner I would say as many as you can, but note that you want those takes to be as good as possible by doing all the things said in this video, otherwise you have to edit through a million bad takes and try to choose.

Do they make a device that attaches to your hand or something that pulses the click track? So there is zero click in headphones. Eliminate bleed?
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 5 лет назад
Not sure, but there are earphones that transmit vibrations through your ear bones rather than emitting audible frequencies.
@CHIG5748
@CHIG5748 5 лет назад
That would be cool if it worked. I usually try to use a low frequency click when tracking so it’s not as noticeable if bleeds but some people have to have the cowbell or wood click. Gonna look into it. Thanks!
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 5 лет назад
@@CHIG5748 No worries, "bone conduction" earphones are what you are looking for. I hear they don't exactly "sound" like normal earphones so I have no idea how they might affect performance regarding hearing the backing track and your own voice etc...

@alienrefugee51
@alienrefugee51 5 лет назад
He's tracking into outboard analog gear and his Pro Tools rig probably has a lot more headroom than what most home recordists have. I noticed this too and thought that's gonna confuse a lot of people. Even Graham preaches about recording with more modest levels.
@Sdbbffsd
@Sdbbffsd 5 лет назад
Skeptical Narratives yeah I just wanted to be sure, 0 on the vu(or analog) is really -18 I’m digital right? On my outboard gear I been driving the pre amp to yellow on the peaks and then using the output on my compressor to bring the level down. Working on trying to get the crispy signal still but I’ve been getting a lot of harshness when I try to clip the tube amp
