Awesome 2part series. Paid a really expensive upholsterer to do my mk1 Audi TT headlining and sunvisors in genuine alcantara and he really messed the sunvisors up. Now I'll buy a used set and redo them myself. Although mine the fabric looks like vacuum pressed, I have a starting point. Many thanks.
Very interesting to see how you approach an unknown. I purchase the product from the junkyard, knowing it will be totally destroyed in the initial exploration. Meanwhile, the piece to be saved isn't touched until I'm familiar with how it's safely disassembled. Of course, I'm only working on my own projects and not customer's treasures.
Its great to hear that you liked seeing the process of me figuring out how to open the visor. I almost cut that part out of the video. I'm glad I didn't. Your like the fifth person to say how much they liked that part. Thanks!
Fr: Kip's Customs That yellow/orange sticky mess on light colored headliners, i think thats a combination of the HL foam and the glue, anyway. Try water, just plain water for cleanup of muck
Thanks!! Yeah these visors were especially messy. Usually you can just easily remove the foam with a wire brush and its good. I think who ever BMW had making the sun visors for this model used some strange glue that melted and turns in to a sticky mess when it gets old.
Wow... I would not have been able to discover how it was held together and I would have you damaged he sunvisor trying to open it... you are really patient and it's better to do it slowly but surely... Congrats!! 👏👏👏👏👏 Also, really good editing, with music only when it's necesary and accelerated video where it was not really important to see at actual speed 👍👍👍👍 Also, congratulations for that, which also takes a lot of time, precision and effort! 😉😉😉
great job brother!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 plz..what is the headliner code number you installed? and do they have the pillars suede without foam?i cant find them in the site.. kind regards Man
Dude, that glue stuff is the worst, I have covered my headliner in my e38 and the whole thing was covered, it's a nightmare and nothing touches it. I scraped it too
Alright, so I have a 01 BMW 740İL and I am replacing the headliner completely with suede material. I can assure you that I had the same face ( 5:31 ) 'How the hell did I end up with this thing!' :D My friend that original glue is like oxygen you can not run away lol. I have been cleaning my hands with paint tinner every day, literally thats the only thing that cleans that glue off also to the parts too 'Do not worry, if you rub little bit of paint tinner to the cloth parts the smell is not sticking at all'. Sooo good luck if any body going for it :D
Hello! Did you recover the sun visors as well? Are they like the ones in this video? I'm also replacing the headliner fabric with suede on my e38 but it doesn't seem like they can come apart without destroying them.
What if you re-cover it on top of the original cover..? You wont be adding that much thickness and save all this mess. Just suggestion not trying to piss anyone off.
You could do this if the foam and fabric were still in good shape but if you cover old material with new material it will still show the areas thats the foam is delaminating.
Let me add to my comment of 2 years ago. All upholsterers here are lazy and want to pocket the money with 30-40 minutes of work, thats why they'll say the can't do it the same like it was because the factory part is "pressed", which is complete BS.
