Hi Dan, my Dad is a retired roofer, and my brother and I have worked with him since the mid eighties.. just wanted to suggest that with complex roof structures like yours, it’s often better to build everything on the ground first by mocking up walls with old railway sleepers ti get your levels and spacing right. Then build the frame, once you’ve done the main frame, rafters, ridges, dormers and battens, you could then elect to cut and ‘dry fit’ the tiles/slates. Once you’re happy with each section of roof (looks like you have 5 separate roofs), you can either deconstruct it and ferry it up and fit back together up top, or once tiles are removed from the dry fit, get the 5 roofs craned 🏗️ up on top. It reduces the amount of leg work at height, it reduces the hire period for scaffolding by about 75%!

Good day Dan. Watching you here from the U.S. I know your main plan is to restore this shell of this chateau to its original status. You also need to remember that this house is not its exactly what the original architect had created in the 1920's. Many changes / aging has taken place. Changes are good, it may not end up exactly like before. Whomever the architect was for this chateau was brilliant. And the workmanship is a statement of time that it stands undefeated. Just keep looking for the clues that have remained. Cause this chateau is speaking loudly to come alive and be loved once more.❤❤❤❤.

@Nessy-of-the-Lynn
@Nessy-of-the-Lynn 8 месяцев назад
@@rhondashuker3641 They are great accomplishments, but so far this is the rough work. I assume he will be doing all the work till the end. The sheer amount of brick work he has ahead of him will take a lot of time. Running new wiring, plumbing, tiling, etc. take a lot of time if you want to do it right. On top of that finishing work is the most time consuming. For example, it will astound you how much trim you need to finish just one room. Plus the angle cuts have to be perfect or they don't match up well. A single degree difference can add up over a long board. In addition many things like paint, varnishes, glues and epoxy take time to dry before you can take the next step, which usually is another coat of the same thing you just applied. It tends to be that the closer you are to done, the harder the work that is left is, in terms of time and patience. I do expect he will exceed our expectations on those as well, but I cannot see such a big place finished in five years unless he gets more helping hands. It would be better if people expected less of him so that he doesn't push himself too hard trying to please people. The work he is doing is exhausting. I would know as I have built several homes, one of which was around 5,000 square feet, including the foundation which we also built. It burned down thanks to squirrels chewing their way into the house about 20 years later. We then had to clean up the debris and rebuild. This time we made sure to make it squirrel proof and ran shielded wiring to prevent critters from chewing on the power wires again. Thankfully so far not even a mouse has been able to enter. We went a little crazy with the pest prevention this time around as we are a bit more paranoid.

@@fotter9567 Dan made that comment AFTER explaining that he would be consulting and getting plans from structural engineers BEFORE proceeding any further on the roof. It's almost as if you didn't actually watch the video. MY comment was referring to his ability to see it as a challenge and a step by step process rather than rolling into a fetal position as most people might when faced with such a project. AND when all is said and done...when you've had a structural engineer provide advice and blueprints etc...the final thing to be done is to construct it accordingly and that means doing exactly what Dan said "screwing boards together" . I believe the reason Dan is able to do so much and keep such a good attitude is by breaking everything down to it's simplest steps. And then he does those steps one at a time in order and doesn't get bogged down by all the millions of steps that follow. One step at a time is getting him to his goal. It's actually quite genius. Thank God for people like your grandfather. I have great respect for engineers in all categories and believe they should especially be consulted in matters of structural integrity of a building. Although I'm a qualified building engineer I've never dealt with a mansard roof before. On looking into it it seems less complicated than I originally thought. The trusses are basically a rectangle supported on your floor joists((quite close to the inside of the wall), with angled rafters supported by the wall (concrete ring beam?) and a triangle with ridge beam above. Have you thought of putting in a lift - say in one of the bathroom sections off the turret? Even a simple electric hoist at present would be great for getting materials up to the upper floors. Great job so far! 😀

3:04 If needed somewhere, you can always go by the "brute force" way to measure the height of the roof: (1) fill a balloon with helium and tie it to a cord, (2) from the center of the top room, try to match (place the balloon at) the old photos roof landmarks checking with the perspective; (3) and the length of the cord (from the top of the walls) is the total height ;-)

@@daisylovelock9553 thanks, that's why I called it "brute force" ;-) and I'm not so sure geometry would be faster for the curved roof, mainly because of the photo perspective that distorted the original curve, which is unknown. The method of framing the roof starts essentially by building a room within a room. When you ascertain the pitch of the lower half, and the height of the ceiling of inner room. Then you can build a pony (set back) wall. Then the lower pitched rafters set on the outside plate of rock walls, and the top of the rafter rests on the top plate of the inner wall. The lower pitch of the higher roof can be trusted, providing a ceiling, slope of roof, and span the entire room. Hip trusses can be used on the upper roof. Framing lower pitch of mansard/mansart roof becomes general carpentry.

Getting the turret roof peak done will probably be the easiest of all the roofs. All you have to do is focus on shoring the turrets wall tops, get the dimensions and build the roof on the ground safely. When it is finished use a large crane to get it up there and sit it in place and secure it to the top of the walls. That is how most of the castle resorations get their turrets done without large amounts of expensive external scaffolding.
@lantapaukku7629
@lantapaukku7629 8 месяцев назад
This is obvious route, but so far Mr Dan has found insidous ways to achieve quick results where reasonable man would have erected scaffoldings, built fixed stairs inside or hired a crane. Hey Dan, it looks like from the old pics that the turret should be where the ‘ new’ bricks are its a bit odd they have added a layer in the centre🎉🎉🎉🎉 @3:14
@theghost6412
@theghost6412 8 месяцев назад
@@Mindsi looks like there was another floor mid way up the turret roof, hence the windows. If you look at 2:52 there is someone right up the very top. So there is obviously ladders and trapdoors to get all the way up there.

@@theghost6412 but why the big stack of red bricks? In the old photo it’s just the turret after the three levels?it’s a bit like the overlook hotel film set in the shining which had impossible geometry if it was real😂😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂

to build a Mansard roof, place sill plate timbers on the top of the masonry. connect the outside walls with tie beams/floor joists of the attic, and tie to the plates atop the wall. erect the steep pitched sections and brace in position. connect those rafters to the tie beams. across the top of the rafters place a beam that will support the upper trusses Construct the upper trusses as king post trusses with allowance for a peak rafter beam. tie the upper trusses to the steep pitched walls. the lower chord of the upper truss will act as another tie beam. the steep rafter lower tie beam and a vertical tie between the floor and the rafter will act as a half truss on the extreme outside. bracing between the upper truss bottom chord and the steep walls will stiffen the roof structure. Another option is the create a barn-roof of the American type. there should be a detail at the gutter end to kick the water away from the masonry wall The Mansard roof construction will create an open attic space above.

I've watch since you were first at chateau L. You have accomplished sooo much, and it hit me today that you really should be having more sponsors for materials, tools, etc. Is there a reason why you don't? Do companies not know about you and what you're doing ? We, all your viewers, should step in and help you get connected. I know you are basically a one man operation ( except for nick etc ) but would love for experienced tradesmen to step in and volunteer thier services. Ie.. roofing companies, master carpenters that could re-build your staircases, doors etc. You can still be the one who designs it , but let them do the labor and installation, while you work on other areas. You are amazing Dan 👏 ❤️ 👍
