This is brilliant! It would be so cool to have an art class save up their paper towels for a year then make projects with it.

Well I didn’t have any used paper towels to recycle so I decided to make some in the process my hands got quite messy because I decided to use deco art ultra dye instead of paint because the colors are so intense well I grabbed a baby wipe which looked so pretty and to be honest they are thicker than the paper towels so I actually made some with the wipes I did 3colors in swirls like the dye and wipes are wet so it spread so beautifully I haven’t put them together yet but I can’t wait they’re going to be so pretty thanks for the idea

Like Shoshi Platypus, I have been doing this for a while & I even dry emboss them afterwards to add even more dimension & texture. I do use baby wipes too, they do have a different result but can still be used. Fabric paint works well on the end results too. I NEVER throw any towels away, got bags full. Thought I was a bit mad (well I am actually) for doing this, seems not. Sometimes I prefer the patterns etc on these than on a piece I have spent ages on, lol. This is great to share for those who haven't tried it. C :))

Wish I had the problem of messy used papertowels lol. I don't paint or stamp enough over papertowels-- i sit stuff on scratch paper and dab with fabric rags from around the house- lol. Soo cool though. TFS I'll keep the technique in a playlist

I love texture it really changes the value of things I truly love this idea but then again I love everything that jennibellie does such a beautiful mind, I also learned from another artist if you take some fabric that you don't like paint it with white gesso you can make a kind of canvas out of it...

Hey jenni- I love this idea. I scored a few boxes of heavy duty paper towel and I wanna send you a pack of it. I bet you'd easily be able to get by with only doubling it instead of layering 4 pieces. Each sheet is SO thick its already durable. Hit me back and let me know how I can get this to you. I love sharing stuff, and I'm super excited you shared this tip. I'm converts. Feel kinda bad now tho for ALL the paper towel that I've just thrown away. Haha

If you cut open ziplock plastic bags or grab some non-adhesive plastic used for covering books, or a thicker cellophane, you can use that underneath the paper towels so you can move them somewhere to dry, then just peel them off once they’re dry

Love this, Jennibellie. I've been doing this for quite a while and never throw anything out lol! I've got some at top right on my blog header - I added some carefully placed gilding flakes to that piece. It's a great technique for adding to existing surfaces, too - I have sometimes used just one sheet because it's supported underneath, and also I've torn the used paper towels into small pieces and reconstituted them - this way you can use it to cover 3-D objects. Also you can crinkle up the pieces as you put them down, for extra texture, and add some gilding wax to the high spots. Some of my best sheets have come from spraying with Dylusions inks - really intense colour! I've got quite a box full now. Endless possibilities - I love this stuff! You can also use paper table napkins, either plain or patterned, and tear the layers apart. I've got a box of those, too! Shoshi

Shoshi, I loved your ideas. Thanks for taking the time to share. I have a question. What is & where can you get "gilding flakes"? Sounds wonderful. Would love to see your pieces. Do you have a web-site? Thanks again for the information.
@ShoshiPlatypus
@ShoshiPlatypus 10 лет назад
Donna MAY-BRUNET Hi Donna - thanks for your nice response! If you do a Google search for gilding flakes you'll find lots of different suppliers, as well as technique videos etc. They are little flakes of very thin metallic plastic which are very light and get absolutely everywhere - turn off the fan before using lol!! It's best also to decant them from the tiny box they come in, into something larger (e.g. Chinese takeaway plastic box) so they are easier to use and make less mess. They are sprinkled onto a glued surface and then burnished with a rough sponge which gets rid of the loose bits and you end up with a gorgeous metallic surface. Yes, I have a blog - shoshiplatypus.blogspot.co.uk and if you search for "gilding flakes" in my labels list in the RH sidebar you can see some posts where I've used them. Lots of other mixed media stuff on my blog as well. Have fun! Shoshi

you can try it hun, I'd wait for them to completely dry out first though & I imagine you'll get a lot stiffer results - I'm going by the times I've used them to wipe up glue or accidentally got glue on them they've dried out quite hard, so I doubt you'll get the flexibility with them but it may still be a cool surface to work on xx
