Deviating attention is not that easy because the mind always takes you back even if you are thinking about serving Krishna. I agree with the part that we need to eradicate the root cause but as per my understanding, instead of cheating and diverting it to other things, try to understand the nature of "Ahankara or Jeevatma". Jeevatma is part of nature so it has a tendency to attract towards it, you can't stop it.
