What I love about these videos is that you go into detail and explain exactly what's going on. Most other tutorials only go as far as telling you what tools to use and not why you're using them.

This is one of the most common tasks in image manipulation but until Phlearn covers a topic I'm not satisfied regarding the informations I have about it. Thanks for yet another awesome video!

There is a much better way. I zoom in about 800% and adjust hue, saturation, and value on each individual pixel. It takes years, but there is no loss of detail.

+Andrea Diagbouga Softening too much DEFINITELY makes the picture look weird, especially in high-detail areas like skin pores, etc. My general process is to denoise as much as possible before noticeably losing detail (with very careful examination), and then I add some grain back into it...which helps prevent that "painterly" look, gives the illusion of resharpening, and is a bit more aesthetically pleasing than digital noise. I would've liked them to have gone over some of this in this video...but eh, maybe they'll cover it in another one.

I liked the last step of reducing the opacity of the group. looked a little strange to me after all the filters. Bringing back a little bit of the noise seems more realistic. I would even go as far and say, that maybe only reducing the color noise makes it look more "analog grain-ish" which would also be a nice look, i guess. Thanks for the episode! This surface blur thing is genius!!

I take pictures (I not consider myself a photographer, kind of a hobbyist maybe) of classical music concerts and I really struggle with this things. First, because in my college they don't let you take pictures been really close to the stage because you can distract the artists and also the public, so since I didn't have a lot of money to buy a lens that would let me take pictures from a far, I buy a super zoom camera. Also, in classical music people tend to like more pictures with no motion what so ever so low shutter speed is not an option. Finally poor lighting and not able to use extra lights make it worst. This was really useful thank you.

My Canon 60D is terrible for noise so I try not to go above 200 to 250. But I've been shooting a tank display today and it was very overcast. I was using quite a high apature, around f8 to f11, so I had to use high ISOs, 1600 at one point. So thanks for this, I'm going to give it a try now,

Curious why so many "experts" are still saying ISO is the the sensitivity of the sensor. That's just false. And it doesn't matter if that helps people understand it, it's still incorrect. 1) ISO is camera model specific and isn't actually standardized despite being an acronym for International Organization for Standardization and 2) it is literally a post image multiplier of the pixel values. It has absolutely nothing to do with "sensitivity" of the sensor and saying that it does just propagates the misunderstanding. For those that want to explore this further check out Tony Northrups videos on ISO.

I prefer a sharp image with a touch of noise than a soft image with zero noise .........a dark image like the one in the example just doesn't look right without a touch of noise....maybe it is just me as I shot film for so long before moving to digital...........personally I think the effect he did made the image look soft and out of focus and thus a poorer quality image than the original with a touch of noise - Most editors look for sharpness in your portfolio - if your images are not sharp you won't get the job, trust me........worry more about being sharp than a touch of noise - The final image in this example I would not put in my portfolio as it is just too soft.....noise reduction is best used in graphical images, especially sunsets i find - just my opinion
@zabacinjsh

Unfortunately didn't help me at all :( the noise I have doesn't look like little dots to begin with, just smudges, and the surface blur just made it worse :( I don't know what to do anymore, the healing brushes kind of work, but I don't have that kind of time to go over the whole image, can anyone help with the issue of having smudge-like noise?
@EminoMeneko
@EminoMeneko 8 лет назад
If the image is printed on a small canvas I guess you'll need to pay attention to the fact it is blured. You'd rather notice these large black areas where noise rules. xD But true that at full size the result is not so good. If aaron@phlearn can't do it I guess I shouldn't try too hard to get a perfect result. :/ I guess I'd try several things such as playing around with layer fusion modes or removing pixels from a black pictures taken from the camera. I'm not certain the noise is always the same on each picture though. Or take a couple and keep the median data of them. To be given a try.
@timelord2222

If you wanna go further, I highly recommend Neat Image plugin. It's not free, but it allows you to reduce noise on three detail levels (Low / Mid / High) and three channels (Y / Cb / Cr).

Isn’t there a way to do what you did to fill in the pixels that re grainy? Like using one layer as a color and another as a luminosity over the original?
@MagnusG99

I think it's better to reduce noise more selectively. Usually the noise more in your face in the shadows so I use "blend if" to be able to get more noise reduction in shadows and less in highlights. No I'm not good at English ;)

Aaron, the third angle of Exposure Triangle is not ISO but light. ISO is just post exposure gain regulation. Iso is not increasing sensor sensitivity cause this one is constant.

Aaron - Your intro makes perfect sense, but I could still use some help. I'm trying to PS an old .jpg photo of a re-modeled GTO ('76) for a relative. I am having one major obstacle eliminating the noise of a chrome panel at the bottom of the vehicle. The picture was taken with an iPhone 7+ @ ISO 20, 1/6800 sec @ f/1.8. What happens is that the bottom chrome panel looks like a silver dotted line across the length of the car no matter what I do, and I cannot figure how to eliminate or smooth out this look. It's extremely distracting. Can you please help?
