This totally blew my mind. I tried it on some of my images and POOF! my color noise was gone. So now I know in a pinch I can bump my ISO up a bit and fix it in post. Thanks for the video!

Another effective way to remove color noise is to take a duplicate of the image into LAB color space, gaussian blur the A (magenta and green) and B (blue and yellow) channels in the area of 8 pixels or or so - until the channel appears completely soft/out of focus. Move that LAB image as a layer over the original RGB image and mask/clip as needed to apply to the areas where wanted. (I participated in the editing of of Dan Margulis' book "Canyon Conundrum LAB - The Most Powerful Colorspace", in which this technique is taught. Cheers!)

So this is kinda old but if you're going to use the surface blur technique I suggest going into each color channel an applying a filter that works for that channel. It helps to preserve some definition since each color channel will have different levels of noise.

For people trying this, as a heads up, 16bit images take expontially longer to process with this surface blur technique. Then again most actions/processes take longer. But it was almost locking up my PC, so I had to convert to 8bit.

i tried all of them and none of them worked for some reason. at all. the image doesn't change at all, even though, in the filter preview, it did change, and i put the filter to the max each time, but after i close the filter window, the filter doenst change the image at all. and i created a new layer for each fitler. i basically did everything as explained in this vid.

With dark pictures, I often end up not with colour noise but I get lots of little points, most of them are white, some are dark. Especially if you're trying to sharpen the picture it looks gruesome. Any ideas on that other than surface blur?
@chefranden
@chefranden 10 лет назад
If you want to reduce noise yet preserve detail, learn how to make a no edge mask or anti-edge mask. This protects your edges from any de-noise procedures. One way to do this is by inverting an edge mask. You can easily make an action that applies this to a mask automatically.

Question, if anyone is still around: around 6:19, he talks about using a layer mask and painting things black. I don't understand this at all, or how he does it. Could someone point in me the right direction? Thank you kindly
@michelleparkos2318
@michelleparkos2318 6 лет назад
When you select a layer mask you use the brush tool set to black and paint where you don't want the effect to happen-but be sure you are in the layer mask by clicking on it. You can also right click on the layer mask and go to "select and mask" and further edit your edges. I am still learning all the fine details of these things as well.

@hellowow8746
@hellowow8746 7 лет назад
No offense but the picture looks so blurred and looks like a painting. And you call 'NOISE REMOVAL'? That is called blurring the image. You can do better in Lightroom. Just unsaturate the color noise and put luminance. Much more simpler.

at the end, layer 3 is at full opacity with no blend mode, so aren't we just seeing layer 3 and all the other layers aren't doing anything?
@ITendToRock
@ITendToRock 7 лет назад
yes but he basically copied the last layer he made changes to which kept what he did on that layer and all the changes before it so layer three was basically like a flattened image of all the layers

@campar1043
@campar1043 8 лет назад
so the noise you see in the photo comes from having a cheaper camera?
@RandomCatVids
@RandomCatVids 8 лет назад
+Cam Par Not necessarily, but noise is a lot more common in cheaper cameras. Even using a camera that cost over $500, I still occasionally get a bunch of noise. Noise is often sensor noise caused by poor illumination and/or high temperature, and/or transmission.
@campar1043
@campar1043 8 лет назад
RandomCatVids what are your thoughts on the rebel t3?
@rubenriestra6721
@rubenriestra6721 8 лет назад
+Cam Par Its okey for beginners but if you can start with a t5i it would be much better. With the t3 you will have a bunch of noise in low-light conditions, the t5i it isnt wonderful but can stand higher iso numbers with less noise.
@campar1043
@campar1043 8 лет назад
Rubén Riestra Lobejón since I have a t3, for low light situations, I can set the shutter to lower speeds to I can keep the iso low right?
@rubenriestra6721
@rubenriestra6721 8 лет назад
Yeah but sometimes is not enough. And you cant "never" low the shutter speed under the number of your focal distance. If you have a 50mm without stablization you should not low your shutter speed under 1/50 and if your lens is not very luminous you will have to put the iso up

I'm new to photo shop, hence why I'm watching this video. You go so damn fast its hard to keep up, no problem I have the pause button right? but then you start talking about shift option e or something like that. I have no clue what you're talking about. You didn't help me at all. There's no doubt in my mind you know what you're doing. However, this is supposed to be about teaching me so I know what the hell I'm doing. I found little value in your video because you lost me at the 4:33 mark. I'll have to find something else. Thanks anyways.

Hey Danny - I was new to PS about a year ago, and the terminology can be confusing initially - I have found Phlearn to be an extremely useful resource, Aaron does talk quickly, but that is simply his passion for the subject matter. I'd say stick with it and you'll not be disappointed. There are many other beginner PS RU-vidr out there, and you'll find that they may explain some things in greater depth for complete newcomers; very few of them have the skills that Aaron demonstrates, though, so I hope you;ll come back to Phlearn for more info and demos when you're ready. (That Alt/Command/Option... blah, blah stuff is only awkward for a week or two, until you realise that the 'Option' key is only on Mac OS keyboards and that 'Alt' does pretty much the same thing on PC, by the way) :-)

@Snowflake_Baiter
@Snowflake_Baiter 9 лет назад
Danny Clark May I suggest that you start over and look at the beginner tutorials, photoshop is mammoth when it comes to terms of functionality and these videos are great and the originals do post what to listen out for in terms of a windows PC and a Mac,... it would be too time consuming for Aaron to explain everything in every video, plus the fact it is a free resource - so quit whining and possibly read the manual that comes with photoshop.

To anyone confused about the combination at 4:33, it's shift+alt+ctrl+e, to do a stamp of visible layers. Had to google it. Recommendation to uploader: spell out the commands on the screen.
