I have refurbished BBS wheels a few years back on a MKVII I had. After I split the wheels apart I washed the centers and barrels in citrus engine wash and followed up with wheel acid like is used on tractor trailer aluminum wheels followed by a similar paint stripping product. One tip if you use a chemical stripper place the rim in a plastic bag to keep the stripper wet and stop by a carpentry shop and beg or buy a big trash bag of saw dust to clean the stripper off the wheels. I used a couple of ice scrapers to clean off any remaining clear coat. I cleaned up my centers and wheel centers much the same as you did but took my barrels over to a local truck wash and paid to have mine polished. I think I paid the guy 15 or 20 bucks a barrel for him to polish them which if you consider the cost of sandpaper and polishing compound etc plus my time I would have spent more than what I paid and still would not of been able to do get the barrels looking as good. Like you I painted my centers and wheel hardware. One thing you did not mention is to apply a thread locking compound on the bolts before reassembling them. Additionally a friend of mine who works at body shop at a dealership highly recommended that I paint the outer portion of the barrel from bead to bead with several coats of clear, his reasoning for this was to seal any pin hole defects in the barrels that could cause a slow air leak and to prevent corrosion. Like a dumb ass I did not take his advice and one of my wheels was plagued with a slow air leak which I solved when I dismounted the tire and cleared the barrel of the rim.
3-piece BBS mesh wheels like these are never played out. Really nice work there, you've inspired me to try my hand with a set of old Etoile 455's I've had sitting around.
I’ve watched probably 15 videos tonight on this subject And not only was this helpful because you have the same wheels as me but this is the Best quality walk-through by far! Thanks a ton!
They look fantastic, love the color! Very much enjoying watching the build. Been watching for a bit now and I'm glad found your channel. Keep up the great work!
Seriously brilliant job Love your video I now know how these rims come apart without damaging them having a set of Simmons which are assembled the same way even showing me how I can hand polish the aluminium as mine are dull like when you rubbed them down with wet and dry paper You have a skill sir beautiful house by the way too cheers from Australia
This hits home, im restoring a set of racing hart type C's while spending as little as possible, I even found a rattle can paint thats a shade off of the oem silver 🤣 curre tly working on getting up an electrolysis bucket to remove rust from the nuts so I can re plate them Oh, and supposedly a can of CRC gasket remover will strip powder coat, havent tried it but watched a video of it working
Nice job! (again) Tip: when using brush-on paintstripper on hard coatings like on those wheels, cover/wrap it with some plastic film or shrinkwhrap foil or something like that. Directly on the product, that way the stripper doesnt get the chance to dry out before it has eaten all the paint/coat off the metal.
As a huge BMW fan and someone who loves watching fabrication and DIY work, I'm super pumped you have your own channel. This was really interesting to watch, I might have to peep some junkyards for wheels for my E36 now
@@baysidefabrication That's awesome, Cosmos and Dakkar are probably my two favorite colors for E36s - I hope to buy another M3 in one of those two colors in the somewhat-near future. I can only imagine how nice that combo looked on your car!
Nice job. I did some polished wheels and yes it's a time consuming job but the shine at the end is awesome. I used autoglym metal polish and it works really well. Ofcourse you gotta sand and wet sand first to 1500 or 2000 grit and then use it.
I think a some black lights would go great with this car's theme. 😉 PS - You just gave me the motivation to clean up the wheels on my 330i. They're 5-spoke wheels, so it should be pretty easy.
I would suggest to do a Degreaser Bath (hydrocarbon degreaser) then acid bath (Hydrofluric acid) using a high pressure washer before you start pulling the wheels apart will save you a sheet-load of time. Just a suggestion from a Car Detailer. Love the video mate! They look sweet as!
Beautiful wheels and great job. I would have recommended using some true aluminum sealant on those lips before you reassembled. I still haven't figured a way to polish between the rivets on my Works. So the oxidation just stays there and it looks horrible close up. Thinking of just chroming the lips for this very reason. Maintenace is a b----.
The car is coming along amazing! What is the plans for the side skirts I feel like that dimple died part of the frame stands out. My thought was make a super aggressive set of aero (side skirts diffuser and splitter).
Awesome video how-to. I've been procrastinating on my own wheel resto. I have much simpler one piece mesh wheels I want to strip back and paint up. Did you literally just use a wire brush to strip the faces? I love the mesh style wheels, and your tennis balls look epic. Well done!
I appreciate your dedication to detail here. A GTI spray gun being used for a set of wheels from a German car. I see you my brother. 😎 If you would've ran a white baee coat before the crazy highlighter cooler would it have made it extra bright? Or is that just plasti dip?
Just my opinion and don't get me wrong they look awesome but I'd paint the bolts black. Would accent the center BBS cap better. Just my thoughts if I had to critique anything. But in all great job on the restoration, they look great!!!
I have an old set of RS’s… they are staggered 12” and 9”… my dad bought them 20 years ago or so for one of his Porsches but they didn’t fit lol… he also just bought them for some charity auction…. Anyways they are gold and I need to refinish them and rebarrel the 12” to get them to fit on my 911… Would Cerakoat be a good option for paint/ finish??
I just saw your post on the Porsche pages. I want those wheels!!! Powder coat would be great. Cerakote is more for high heat applications like headers and stuff. Would definitely work but it gives you much less color options.
@@baysidefabrication ya there’s some good color choices for me for cerakote, and the series that doesn’t need baking so it would be easier for me to do in my garage than out source them. Someone DM’d me and offered me a set of Fuchs for them which is very tempting lol
@@baysidefabrication try doing a polished or brushed face/spokes and do the same black and 90's neon splatter paint in the barrels. Maybe some engraving on the lip/bead region with gold/silver leaf in some classic lowrider scroll work. Ehh? Thatd be pretty sweet huh?! 🤔
For the really small areas I buy pew pew wire brushes by the dozen and just use them with a drill. Gets in really tight spaces and come in a variety of sizes from 12 gauge all the way to 22/ 223 556 lol
You'd be surprised how bad of curb crashing you can fix without using putty or bondo. Although I've considered using metal infused jb weld before or that liquid steel (I think is the name ). But you can use a file for the bad stuff. If you have a drill or any sort of rotating tool you can put some sort of flat sanding attachment to make quick work of anything. Usually you'll be alright with just some sanding, filler primer, then paint. Hopefully its not a complicated color to make it easier on yourself
Just picked up a set of the RC090s myself for my e46 sedan. Curious why you stopped with 1500 grit? I see most go to 2000. I am looking for a little better polish personally because my car is for show. Also any info about how you did the BBS caps?
Bayside Fabrication ahhh okay, definitely a great diy video none the less. Like I said, curious how you did the BBS caps, that’s something I’ve seen as well and want to do
@@baysidefabrication ahh you’re right. Thanks for the help! I just started a refinish on some style 19! Also if there is rash, in what step would that be sanded?
To save tons of time, bead blast the entire wheel disassembled. Powder coat centers and polish the lips yourself. Those wheels refinished are worth two grand easy, the blasting and powder coat $400. I refinished a set of OZ rims just like this video, very time consuming and nasty. Never again!!! Great video
