Aunty, all that we add are worm castings and woodcips. . The soil itself already has worms. I see them when I plant. They will feed on whatever is in the soil and on top of the soil. I prune trees. The branches go into my wood chipper. I add layers of chopped wood, leaves, cut grass, and worm bin castings. All of that acts as a mulch, and breaks down. I have never had to buy any commercial fertilizer.
How do we garden with pallets? I have 3 and not a clue what to do with them!? It's only my second year with anything planted! Still feel brand new!🪴🪴🌿🌿🌱🌱
I’m anxiously awaiting the rest of the videos in this series! This will be my 3rd summer with a garden, but first summer at my new house! So we are brainstorming how we want to construct our raised beds currently. I’ll try to be patient for the rest of the videos 😜
Hi Ashley - congrats on the new house, bet you can't wait for the new garden. Make sure to pick up a copy of my new book (link below), all the deets are in there. We'll be working our way through it in this video series. Can't wait to grow in raised beds with you this spring! 👩🏻🌾20% off with code “calikimspringfever” at calikimgardenandhome.com (ends 3/28/22). Great video I’m learning so much from you Kim I do raised beds 3 raised bed cani I get the Warm cast and the fertilizer get that stuff at Home Depot or Lower
Here on my decent sized, south facing balcony in North Italy, my Rucola is already good for a first one meal harvest, my radishes are surging ahead, as are my sunflowers and beets. Zucchini are just starting, I'm reducing the bird food on my balcony and so far I'm yet again failing to germinate my chilli seeds. My Basil germination is best described as "reluctant", while my Chives and Garlic are visibly happy..
Hi MtPeter - wow, you've really got it going on in your container garden - fabulous! Keep me posted on your harvests - bet you're loving those fresh veggies. Thanks for stopping by!
I did not know the fact about high NPK fertilizers making the plants more attractive to bugs. Thanks for all the great information. I will be planting beans, watermelon, squash and pumpkins soon in my raised bed gardens.
I plant cover crops in the fall in my beds. Mid winter I pull them out and lay them on the top. I cover that with compost and leave it until spring when I plant. The beds are full of worms at that point!
I’m in! I will be refreshing my raised beds this weekend too. Im excited to see all the growth this year will bring. Thank you for the tips in your video. Happy Spring!
I love your raised bed... Do you sell those? Also, would I be able to leave one outside over winter here in Michigan without it being damaged by our harsh and crazy winter weather?
Hi Cryptic - You can grab the Smart Pots Urban Raised Bed here, smartpots.com/product/smart-pot-urban-raised-bed/, use the code "calikim" for 10% off. For future reference, I put links to products I use in the video description to make it easy for you to find. What do you do about sinking beds that have plants that are perennials or last more than a few seasons? My plants are sinking and hilling them up with other plants still inside doesn't seem like a good idea. So, I'm a bit lost.
There's no issue with that, however, I would maximize the use of the worm castings by adding them to the soil directly underneath the plants. Please let me know if that helps, Shaun. Thanks for following along - Kim
Hi Kim. Love your channel!! Could you please share the before and after of your backyard? You mentioned a show that transformed it, could you expound on that story for all of please. You had quite a slopped yard in the beginning??? Thank you
Hello from central Alabama. It isn't quite spring planting time yet, for me. This weekend, temperatures are forecasted to be in the low thirties with frost/freeze potential. I have one raised bed planted with endive, swiss chard, spinach, and onions. The opposing raised bed is prepped, and ready for planting peppers. I have two raised beds that I need to do a final harvest of cabbage, and prepare for planting beans. I have eight grow bags that have onions and lettuce planted around the perimeter, and are ready for planting tomatoes. In other areas, my first potato plants, planted a month ago, are emerging from the ground, and my beets and carrots have begun sprouting. This weekend, I will be planting more beets, carrots, and transplanting alpine strawberries into a GreenStalk tower. I have two GreenStalks, one for strawberries, and one for salads, filled with lettuce, endive, and swiss chard. I plan on purchasing a third tower next year, to make room for increasing the variety of vegetables in my garden. I am planting Blue Borage, Rose red and Champagne Hollyhocks, Orchid Cream Nasturtium, dwarf cosmos, assorted zinnias, and basil for pollinators. I would have included butterfly bush, but something got to my seeds and ate them. If I see them downtown, I'll purchase a few, if not, I'll try again from seed next year.
Wow, impressive, Jay - growing your own veggies is so rewarding. Glad you're enjoying it - you're gonna have a fabulous garden this year! Thanks for watching!

Kim - this will be my second season container gardening, so just learning about amending soil. We just had our home tented for termites. I moved what I could but have two big planters that remained under the tent (just dirt; had pulled last season’s veggie plants). Do you know if I should do anything different to the soil in those beds? I heavily watered them before fumigation. Thx in advance as I couldn’t find info anywhere online on this!
Hi Ichzran31 - congrats on your second season growing veggies - so rewarding! You can amend as I showed in this video, but you might want to check with the termite company to see if what they used for fumigation is toxic for plants. If so, you might want to consider changing out the soil, as it might not grow anything, or test it out first with some easy crops to see if they grow. Thanks for watching!
Hi Kathy - thanks for your interest. My apologies, I only sell the 10 gallons in 3 packs. You can, however, purchase a single purple mini raised bed, calikimgardenandhome.com/smart-pots-containers/calikim-smart-pots-purple-mini-round-raised-bed-1-pack/. I am low on stock for this item, though, so I would grab one soon (discount below). Appreciate you stopping by! 👩🏻🌾20% off with code “calikimspringfever” at calikimgardenandhome.com (ends 3/28/22).
