How To Regrip Your Pickleball Paddle (Step by Step Tutorial) 

In the tennis world, the original grip--the one that directly wraps on the handle--is called the replacement grip. Overgrips are those grips wound on top of the replacement grips. The adhesive tape that comes with the overgrips is called the finishing tape. Replacement grips and overgrips are wound on a diagonal on the paddle handle. The default direction is for righties. If you are a lefty you can wind the overgrip the opposite way so that it fits a bit more naturally in the hand. Most overgrips come from the tennis world and work perfectly for the pickleball world, with the exception of length (tennis racket handles are a half inch or longer than pickleball paddle handles). There are numerous overgrip styles including tacky ones, extra thin ones, extra absorbent ones, silky smooth ones, and ones with ridges or other types of textures.

Great video, thank you! I've added an overgrip to make the handle thicker. Since I have arthritis in my thumb the extra thickness helps make it more comfortable to play.

I'm just about ready to order my 1st Pickleball paddle and my last consideration is grip size. The paddle comes with a standard 4 1/4" size grip and I had played with some loaners from friends which I believe were using a standard size grip. I researched grip sizes on the Internet and found 3 ways to determine your grip size: 1) hold the paddle and see if there is a snug fit when you insert your other hands index finger between your fingertip & palm, 2) measure the distance between the middle crease in your palm to the tip of the ring finger, and 3) by height which is 5'9" and above should use a 4 1/2" grip. By all three methods, i should be using a 4 1/2" grip but I'm afraid this overgrip will increase the grip size. Should i buy the 4 1/4" ( been using this size from loaners anyways) and if i decide to overgrip it than it won't be an issue with it being too big? Anyone having this problem?

Great video! Tks! Question: I watched a video about having "soft hands" at the kitchen. It said one of the ways is to increase the grip size (no elaboration given). The video said it helps prevent having to grip so tightly. Your thoughts. Also, it seems to me that the set up you do in this video makes for a softer feel anyway (I'm a former tennis player) but the way Ben Johns adds more extra material before the final grip wrap would that make for a softer feel because of more bulk. Thoughts??

Excellent video Barrett, thank you. I have a quick question for you: the grip size of my paddle is 4 1/4. If I remove the original manufacturer's grip wrap and regrip it with new tape, will it help in reducing the grip size? (4 1/4 is a bit big for my hand) I'm trying to make the grip smaller.

Good information, however I was looking for a video of actually "re gripping" the paddle. Do you have anything like that where you remove the factory grip and re-grip with a new one? I'm not a real fan of the over-grip mainly because my hands aren't that big and I like to keep the overall grip size as small as I can.

Since you prefer to remove the manufacturer's grip tape when it wears out, can you make a video showing how to replace it? In this video, you mentioned that adhesive can be a problem. I'd like to see how you handle that.

If doing an overgrip is a good idea, or should you, wash the old grip it’s going over? Not like soap and water but like an alcohol wipe or something to get dirk and oil off?

Correction: I didn't watch closely, I did start from the correct side of the tapered end. --- Superseded comment: When you start wrapping the tape, it seems to me the tapering should be positioned the other way, with the inclined part at the end of the handle. You do the opposite. If you started as I just described, then you would not need to change the inclination of the tape.
