My 1997 TOYOTA 4Runner had a similar issue, Unfortunately mine would not turn at all not even to the Accessory position, so I had to drill the little release pin out - then everything just popped out like your video shows. I found my local Autozone had the part called 1997 "4runner ignition lock cylinder". The new cylinder had a fresh release pin assembly (thank u) and came with keys, I just aligned the slot on the new cylinder to the flat rod in the existing housing and slid the cylinder in. Thanks again your video helped me greatly.
I swapped out my Ignition Cylinder today and even though i have a 2000 toyota Tacoma, your tutorial was still very helpful for this poor college student who cant afford to take his car to the shop so thank you for saving me some money!
Your video was a big help...My pick up was broken into and they did a number on the ignition. But by viewing your video I was able to remove the ignition and get it started. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this video, mobile mechanic #1 said it would be a minimum of $280 to replace my PreRunner's ignition lock, mechanic #2 said it would be "several hundred" and he'd know after coming out to assess. After watching your video, I drove to O'reilly's, paid $69 for the cylinder, in about 12 MINUTES I was completely done, so you saved me hundreds from being ripped off.
Hey I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to post this. I have a 2000 Tundra and everything was pretty much the same, took about 45 mins to complete thanks to you and your video.
Thank you so much for this video!!! My ignition lock totally shit out in front of a krogers and thanks to this video I swapped it for a new one in about 5 minutes. I can't believe how easy it is! Thanks man!
@@crappy60 Hey bud, I think I’m doing something wrong or maybe the part behind it is bad, I’ve pulled my old one out and I have the new one in, but still nothing, and it’s fully seated in as it should be, any suggestions? Thanks for any help.👍🏼
@@pouncerminned863 Yea finally, it was a job too, I had to get a right angle die grinder and a cut off wheel before it was over lol.. It’s right now though! 👍🏼
If your key won't move the ignition, you need to drill out the pin. But to note, the pin will rotate with the drill bit. It's possible to do, but difficult. No way to really hold it, just takes time.
@Clarence I would put some graphite in the slot where the key goes in, to lubricate and hopefully loosen the tumblers inside the lock cylinder which then will release any seized pieces
@George or if you get a new lock cylinder with keys that come with transponder chips, then yes you have to have those keys programmed. Any key maker that is a small business usually can program them.
if you cant get key to turn, you can just drill out the pin instead of the whole lock cylinder. just take your time and dont drill into the aluminum housing. it will pop right out
@George The new ignition lock cylinder being installed has its own keys cut for it so the keys in particular do not have chips in them. If you have a 4Runner and it has transponders inside it's keys then you have to get new keys made for the new lock cylinder going in and have them programmed from your old set of keys.
So the one you installed didn't have problem starting the vehicle with the keys having no chips? I was going to order new ignition cylinder w/ keys for my '03 Sequoia and was worried that I will have problem starting the vehicle due to the chips/security code.
Hi C, My 2000 Toyota Four runner sometimes the ignition doesn’t want to start. It will start eventually if I try enough times when it hasn’t been driven. Sometimes if I lean on the ignition a few times it will start. Do you or anyone else here think this may be an ignition switch issue? The guy I bought it from told me that he had put a new ignition switch in it before I bought it.
In this case, I didn’t use a tripod at the time because I was recording on the fly. If I were to remake this video it would definitely look a lot different. I don’t have access to the vehicle anymore.
To be honest, I actually don’t know. I’ve never had to go that deep into the lock assembly. I like to try to have a constructive answer but ironically enough there is probably a RU-vid video on how to do it. 😬
+Hunter J. Short (Hunter Short) I had the same problem as you, spent twenty min. out there trying to turn the key, and then I had the good or stupid idea to put in the new key that came with the new switch and it got stuck. I wiggled/forced it out, and after that the old key turned like normal.
No, I got it. It was the cover from the dashboard w/ the wood grain finish. I did all of this, added the new part, and it still doesn't work. My key turns freely in the ignition.
+F430FORME if a set of keys came with the new lock cylinder, the tumblers should be okay, if not it's possible that you have to set up the tumblers internally for the lock cylinder but from my memory I don't remember the mechanism being like that, check the cylinder outside of the housing where it sits for proper operation or look past it to see if anything is broken so we can rule out the ignition lock cylinder
I replace mines but when I stalled it back in didn't put it back the same position so now when I turn it off its stay beeping and can't take out no more
cjorge0709 halo I have a 97 4 runner 4x4 and then entered the bottom of the ignition key it has two connectors so it has 2 inplug the tiny one and give it a try it works on my truck
Someone tried to steal my 4runner and used a pair of scissors and it got stuck inside. So i cant put the ignition into acc to take the ignition lock out. Is there any way to take out the ignition lock cylinder without putting it into acc?
Annette Uhrich, do your old keys have a chip inside? If so, you might have to re-code your new keys, most key makers and the dealer can program the key. It was a security option in that time. Make sure you have your old keys to they can go from that. It was a safety measure so that if anyone copied a key they wouldn't be able to steal the vehicle unless they have the key with the programmable chip inside.
Annette Uhrich okay, you'll have to find a key maker in town that can program the new key or go to Toyota and have then program it. The local key maker will be cheaper
It is most likely something mechanically happening inside the lock cylinder that is preventing the key from turning. I know this may sound silly but have you jiggled the key while it is inserted in the lock? That can some times make it also if you lock the steering wheel make sure to turn it and relieve pressure applied from having the steering wheel locked, another tip also is to look for some graphite to lubricate the internals. If there are still problems, you will have to change out the unit. Hope this info helps. Good luck
Try turning the wheel and then turning the key. If the steering wheel column has a lock in it that can prevent. The steering wheel can be “clicked” into place and then the column is locked. Hope this helps.
