You will see that many of the tips and procedures used are universal for skill sets "every mechanic should know" and that the biggest value to my videos is the teaching of these skills that are not found in a service manual.
I often get asked this question:
Q: How does one learn these skill sets "every mechanic should know" if they are not found in a manual?
A: NUMBER 1.....GET DIRTY and start wrenching.
-Ask questions
-Find a seasoned craftsman to mentor under
-Tech schools can significantly speed this time up
-Research, read, watch RU-vid videos
Tip: You will never learn it all from one source or in a short time period. No matter what craft you are trying to master, YOU must be dedicated and put the time in. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN DOING! I will say it again, you must actually do the work to master it. You cannot just watch or read about it and master anything.
You want to be a master bike builder, mechanic, welder, nurse, carpenter or you fill in the blank?
-Don't take for granted opportunities to learn deeper
-Be humble and seek advice
-Be intentional with your learning plan
-Don't blame a school, job or your parents for not giving you ever answer, go get it!
I teach a motorcycle/powersports technician program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. These videos are used for review of labs for students and creating a deeper understanding of the lesson/skill set. As there is often more than one way of doing something, may you enjoy this free information as much as our students do in person. PLEASE HIRE OUR GRADUATES!

If you end up drilling, I've had luck using a set of reverse drill bits. The counterclockwise drilling action has the added benefit of turning in the same direction needed for removal of your broken fastener. This allows you to sometimes remove it without needing any other tools. BTW, great video series Shane. Shared with my son who is an up and coming auto tech.

People talk about how simple an 'easy out' can be. Maybe so, once in a while. But I've found, like you showed, it's rarely fast or easy, especially if you care about the remaining threads. The welding trick similarly looks easy but requires care to avoid damaging sidewall threads.

I am stuck at this exact point, with a hole drilled in, but the head (1st attempt with star key) and excess snapped off (2nd attempt with wrench) due to it being rusted in place. I wish it was a bend issue. PB Blaster seems to not have helped too much. boy I wish i owned a welder.

sometimes a square easy out is better the the spiral type. The spiral tighten inward as your trying to remove the broken screw or bolt. I never really worked on motorcycles. Adding a little heat around the bolt will make the housing expand, the you can unscrew it.There are many ways of removing stuck or broken fasterners. One thing you should do a video on is when the head of a fasterners starts to gall against the item it is holding down. This causes more headaches than a broken bolt.

The technique I found works best for me is to drill a hole in the centre of the thread as you did, I then insert 1 half of small pair of needle nose pliers in the hole and unscrew. I now just default to this as seem to save a lot of time in the long run in trying to extract and then end up drilling out anyway.

Best to weld on a washer to the broken bolt and then a nut to the washer. Turn it and you are done.

I have a question. I have a broken bolt ( this is on an auto ) on the transmission where the tail shaft housing attaches. upper right hand bolt. It's a really right area to work in.I've gotten it drilled all the way through but still can't get the bolt out. Figured I'd drill all the way through but I'm not sure I can get the tap tool in the tight area to turn it for 're-threading. If I just drill all the way through and use a locking washer, bolt and nut would this be ok? I don't know what else to do and I'm stuck at this point. I have very little mechanical know how working on a 64 impala. Lost my right leg and trying to get back to driving. Love your channel!

As you can see from the slow response, it takes us forever to screen all these requests. 300-400 a week just in emails and 1000’s of comments! FYI members get answered daily first! Best $1.99 you’ll spend! 😁 That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily! He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones. There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it! Make it a great day! The one-on-one service.
