How to Remove a Collet Guitar Knob

If your guitar has collet-style guitar knobs and you need to remove them, but aren't familiar with this type of knob, you run the risk of damaging your pots, guitar, or both if you try to yank it off like a Stratocaster knob. This type of guitar knob fastens a bit differently than most other guitar knobs, so watch to find out how to properly remove these suckers.

Drives me crazy trying to put one of these on so that it is perfectly LEVEL and turns smooth without “waving.” So you have a tip/technique to easily put them back on level?

These are my favorite knobs, although rather expensive. At $25 a piece I try and find them from Ibanez dealers with overstock, but have had to buy direct from Ibanez on more than one occasion. They are made by Gotoh for Ibanez, and Gotoh does not sell anything at all similar to the public. I have researched other manufacturers for an alternative, but no luck. Apparently they are quite expensive to manufacture, and Ibanez is likely to stop selling them separately, and only include them on certain Prestige models.

Mine is so tight i cant unscrew it. Im thinking of melting through with a solder iron. Collet knob is the dumbest idea I’ve ever seen

I agree. I don't like 'em because I actually have the opposite problem: the cap is constantly loosening on me. I've had to put a little Loktite on mine to keep them from unscrewing themselves, which only makes them difficult to remove when needed.

Hi James! Actually, the make/model of the guitar is irrelevant, since guitar knobs can be easily swapped by previous owners. Also, even the same make of guitar (e.g. 'Telecaster'), can have different knob types based on the specific model. So, there's no way for me to know for sure what kind of knobs are on YOUR Telecaster. If your Tele came with metal knobs, as most do, they're most likely non-collet knobs, which means there is a tiny screw in the shaft that you can loosen. Some Teles come with plastic knobs, but I'm not sure if they're collet knobs or not. Most likely they aren't, but if yours has plastic knobs, first check to make sure they don't have a little removable cap on them (like the knobs in this video). If not, then you're safe to pull them off.

How do I tell if my knob is a collet knob. My bass is a steinberger and they said it was a pull up knob, but it won’t pull up, not that I tried really hard but enough to realize it wasn’t pulling up.

Hi Tim. I go over this in the video. Try to twist that top off the knob(s). If, after a lot of trial, it doesn't appear to be a cap that unscrews, then you've probably got a pull-off knob (Stratocaster style).

I damaged my guitar I pushed my knob in to much I heard a snap and something is making noise in it....

Hi Justin. Hard to say what you might've done just from your description here, but take it to a shop and have a tech look at it. You might just need a new pot. It's also possible that the "snap" you heard was the lacquer cracking, but again, hard to know without being able to actually inspect your guitar in-person.

i have an ibanez and i think its a collet knob but im not sure since i cant get the cap off

They can be tough to unscrew. As you saw in the video, I had a little trouble too. If you’re willing to sacrifice the knob, you may be able to grip the cap with a pair of needle-nose or other pliers, and try to get leverage that way. If, after all that effort, the cap doesn’t move... it’s possible that it’s not a collet knob after all, and just a press-on knob.
