I have watched a number of removal videos and not one person doing the demolition has stuffed a rag into or capped off the drain. I learned the hard way to stuff something into the drain to avoid large pieces of debris from falling in and plugging the pipes.
Watched this and then demo’d our 1982 bathroom. Great video! My only addition - wear long sleeves! (and glasses). I had on glasses, but my arms took a beating from shards of tile.
Great video! I came looking for answers and I got them. And honestly the lack of safety equipment taught me the importance of its use. I learned from your mistakes:) thanks again!
Yes wear protective clothing as well, that fiberglass will get places that you do not want it. So I do this job a couple times a week and most the time we avoid destroying the drywall around the tub. This saves you and the customer time and money. The tubs have a 1.5 lip around the top and sides that is under the drywall. If you start jerking it off you will break the drywall, We cut the lip in the corners and leave the lip because it is feathered into the drywall. then we install some type of waterproof finish cover, Usually acrylic or surround backing.
Use eye protection when pounding tile with a 🔨 hammer. And I'd use a short bimetal blade (4" max) to prevent cutting plumbing and electrical. My preference for cutting is to cut smaller sections. And I'd take my time checking what's behind the walls. Too many videos make the job look fast and easy. But....one screwup (cutting electric wiring or plumbing lines.....) And you've got a mess! Use a mask 😷.
I wish he had shown how he removed the drain part. Also, is there a "next" video of him converting the tub/surround to a walk in shower? I'd like to see it.
you probably dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother recently =)
Is there realistically any way to remove a bathtub without disturbing the tile around it? I'm buying a house where the owners put in new tile around a tub that's so old it has cave paintings on it.
@@HomeRepairTutor thank you for replying. We are removing exactly what you pulled out. A tub/shower and want to install a simple shower only stall. No tub. Yes glass doors.
@@DiannaAtherton great project, we have a bunch of tutorials showing different types of showers, e.g. Schluter, Wedi, KBRS, etc. If you've chosen your system and know the tile, we can give you some links to those videos here on RU-vid
@@DiannaAtherton very cool options, just make sure to use the right thin-set with your shower system. We like Delta, Moen, Grohe, and Hansgrohe faucets
In re: the Sawzall: "I'm using a wood/metal blade..." Me: "a wooden saw blade??" 🤔 (For only just a **single split second** BUT STILL 😂😂😂 good grief 🤪)
Thank you very much for a helpful video. Is it possible to remove that fiberglass tub without cutting (I don't want to mess with the fiberglass dust)? I assume as it was installed originally, it could be removed same way. Maybe to cut out a sheetrock wall from another side to disconnect all pipes which stick out from that fiberglass plate? And is it a shut off valve which disconnect water on that part only, or you need to install it? We got a slab leak under the bath tub and a company suggests to brake tile on the floor. I see there is no concrete under the tub, so it would be way easier to get to the problem point, no jack hammering, no dust. I would appreciate any opinion on this matter.
most of those tubs are installed when the house is being built not after... there is no easy way to remove them in one piece as he said in the beginning.
my shower tub is cheap fiber glass with walls I want to remove and install walk in shower measure bathroom wall to wall 58 inch but the shower pan I want to buy is 60 inch you think will fit because I cant find 58 inch walking shower pan please advise ?
Mask and safety glasses a must. I did this but so much dust and I wear contacts. Easy to remove just take it piece by piece with sawz all. He should have done plumbing how.to remove.
After watching this I tore out my tub today. And of course, unfortunately i managed to hit a pipe when cutting down the tub vertically. The people who had added on the bathroom onto our house (previous owners) did a bad job on not just the plumbing but the entire bathroom, but the pipe was literally directly against the tub in the corner so sure enough I cut it lol. Even by using just the tip of the saw and cutting at an angle, still hit it. Luckily I purchased a shark bite and it fixed it pretty easily in case anyone else winds up having a similar issue
I just did the same thing in an old house and though those fiberglass all-in-ones are ugly, after seeing the same thing the cammer saw behind the tub--no moisture or wet framing--i can see why these are a thing.
Thank you so much for your excellent videos. I have a bit of an issue trying to get the handle off my Mowen shower faucet because the alin nut is striped. Any help on guiding me there this would be appreciated
Thanks so much for the awesome video. I was hoping to see how to remove and enlarge that weird “pop out” wall that holds the plumbing. My master bathroom is small but I’m hoping to find a way to remove that wall and fit in both a tub and a shower replacing my awful tub/shower combo. If you have any tips please let me know.
It's best to turn off the water but if you can't you should be okay. The water lines are not attached to the tub. That said, if you're redoing the mixing valve you'll have to turn off the water main.
Good info. I was hoping for some magic but its the same nasty approach I have used in the past. The reason for my comment is "Steve" never put on a pair of safety glasses. Grinder with no guard is outside the preferred method but sometimes unavoidable. Safety glasses? I guess he could lose one eye, then start wearing them.
Question, I'm about to do this very thing, but I want to keep the drywall corners where the tub flange is. What is the best way to remove this without destroying the drywall corners?
Chris M Carefully cut through the drywall so that when you pull pieces out of the tub, you don't break out chunks, just a clean line where you cut- sometimes, you'll just have to re-drywall and/or replace the corner bead. It will take longer, but if you're careful, you can do demolition without making more work for yourself than you wanted.
That looks like particle board flooring under that tub/shower pan. I'm in the process of removing 55 sheets of particle board from the flooring in my house and replacing it with OSB. The moisture areas will get moisture resistant plywood.
Same process for a mobile home? Never worked on a mobile home/trailer before. Neighbor pipe burst during last winter they never fixed the leak and yeah I don't want their water bill. And now their floor caved I and ceiling is dropped and sink popped up out the vanity. Swollen wood and wallboard.
Okay, first off, Thank You for sharing your advice! Here's some stuff I'm shy about getting into with this sort of project: Am I going to have solder a pipe? How long will the awful drain be open? Wires are scary. Is there a better way to find them? Thanks Guys!
Christine Taylor you might have to solder a pipe but we have a good video on that. You can stuff a rag in the drain to prevent any sewer gas, it'll be open for as long as it takes to install the new shower or tub. Not really a great way to find the wires if they are hidden behind the tub unless you have open access on the other side. Always feel free to ask any questions :D
WHAT gross things can you find under these tubs, lizards, bugs, mice? How much does the tubs weigh with water vs another FG tub or a heavier tub?DO you have to insulate behind the fixtures because ,when running water downstairs, why can someone hear it upstairs?Do the fixtures have to be braced, sometimes I hear rattling? What do you think about those walk-in tubs?
When cutting and handling fiberglass you should wear protective clothing. Anyone who has ever gotten that dust in their pores, lungs or eyes will tell you... it sucks!
Yep, at least long sleeves and safety goggles, I use a fiberglass ladder and when it’s come to recoating time, my arms get filled with the fiberglass. I have found that a dryer sheet gently glided above skin, will, I guess create static to draw the fiberglass out. I’ll admit it doesn’t completely remove it but it definitely makes it a lot easier. Also, take a super cold shower, which sucks, but that’ll shock your pores and draw the fiberglass out. Both ways suck but hey it’s better than the feeling of tons of glass inside your skin lol
Drives me crazy seeing so called trained, skilled tradesmen working without safety glasses on. When you have to squint and turn your head in anticipation of something hitting you, that's a sign you need safety glasses!
Came here to say this. Use appropriate air filteation/dust mask too. 2x in the spirit of training and learning. Said as a fan of this channel. Thank you for sharing.
I got an estimate for removing an fiberglass bathtub and surround, Then to replace with a tub and to tile the surround to the ceiling and tile the floor of abathroom that is 85in x 89in . the tub surround has side walls that are 32in back wall 58in and the height is 82in. I got a quote of $8000.00 this also includes new fixtures is this an fair quote. I am not handy with this type of thing.
and it also depends on where you live, the installer's access to the site, disposal/cleanup, materials involved, etc.. but likely yes someone is looking at making a decent profit on the job based on what they know, have learned, and arent afraid to do..
Good rule labor normally cost about as much as materials but occasionally some cost more material sometimes labor but also good to get a few quotes and go with the medium or a well known and well reviewed person
That tub and surround looks to be in decent shape. Too bad but some okay information. Just cannot get past his complete lack of safety for himself AND kaboom he could have totally hit a wire regardless of how shallow he was trying to cut at an angle! T
Watching him remove tile without glasses made me really nervous. Having removed tile a couple of times before, those shards fly out of nowhere and can easily take an eye out without safety glasses.
