How to Remove a Fuel Pump Lock Ring: Reality Check!

In this video I explained the reality for removing a lock ring. They can be easy or they can be a pain to remove. There is multiple methods to remove them and none are perfect! You will damage the ring if its seized in place.
If it doesn't start turning from the start, with the lock ring tool or a wood plank/metal bar, you will need to apply more force and it will damage the tabs of the ring.
Be sure to use penetrating oil as soon as you remove the seat and the plugs from the fuel pump. This will give you an edge agains't the ring's friction.
Hope it help!

If you go to an auto parts store and tell them that you want to borrow a tool to remove the ring holding the fuel pump/ fuel sending unit and tell them the year make and model of the vehicle they will let you borrow it. Sometimes you just leave your id with them and other times you give them a deposit and your id and as long as you return the tool undamaged you will get the whole deposit back

I used the exact same method to get mine off, except I used a large rubber mallet instead of a metal one. I beat on it for about ten minutes and it broke free. Ahhh, you got one of those! You must feeled it, when I said some people make it look so easy, when it's not the reality. Usually the flat bar with an heavy mallet would have done it. Man, if you are feed-up I don't judge you for cutting it off, but if you can keep going with an heavy maller with the flat pry bar. -Get piss and cut off those tab with the pry bar and the hammer. I want you to try to break them. I believe it will turn after 5-6 broken tab. But ya, if you go for the cuting, watch yourself, don't touch the floor. A cut on top of the lock ring on both side will do the job. Finish with an hammer and a chisel or something. Prefer you being piss in one peice than you being piss and missing half your face from a burn. P.S: Save the o-ring between the floor and the pump, just incase the new pump doesn't have the proper one. Happenned often to me to get smaller one! Stay safe man! And Fuck that lock ring for me! Hahahah

I am going to try your method but first I would like to know if I absolutely have to remove the fuel lines first before hammering the lock ring because I have two fuel lines coming from my unit ( renault megane2-1.5dci). One line has the red circle like in your video & the other line has black push button sides to unlock it. Can I just leave the lines connected ? Thanks Hadi
@probonomechanic
@probonomechanic Год назад
It is not an absolute, but it is advized. The reason is that the fuel pump could turn as you start to remove the lock ring. This could kink, twist, or damage the fuel lines. Since the fuel lines stays with the car and the fuel pump is change it is safer to just remove them in advance. Was your purpose to change the fuel pump? P.S: Sorry for the delayed answer

Hi, can i cut the lock ring with a saw? Will it be safe? Its super stuck on my 2016 corolla. Ill replace with a new lock ring ofcourse
@probonomechanic
@probonomechanic 2 года назад
I really can't suggest it. The reason is that the lock ring screw over the gas tank. If you cut it just a bit too far, you will damage the treads on the gas tank where the lock ring screw. It will result into either a constant gas smell/gas fumes inside the car or the new lock ring may not screw over the broken treads. Did you try to use a can of lubricant to litterally flood the lock ring with oil? If you do let it sit a few minutes and then try to hit has hard as you can with the pry bar I showed in the video. (Remember to use a rag to protect the hammer from making a spark) If you have no other choices, i woupd say that you need to make 2 cuts, one on each side of the lock ring to opposite side (once cut it would look like two half-moon). The pain will be the sides of the lock ring. So you can either try to use some kind of chisel or screwdriver to try to seperate/break the lock ring where you made the cut. Be really carefull! I don't want you to caught fire if you hit metal on metal. So use a rag or some old clothing to protect the hammer from sparking on the chisel. Let me know how it goes!

@@probonomechanic thank you for the thoughtful reply! No, i have not tried oil/lubricant. Do you recommend PB Blaster? I was worried that it would contaminate the gas. Ill try this first before trying to cut the ring. Thank you again!
@probonomechanic
@probonomechanic 2 года назад
@@karmabasedj8184 PB blaster would be perfect for the job! Don't worry too much for contamination for now. Shoot the lubricant heavily on top of the gas pump and all around the lock ring. Wait a few minutes and when it is time to start the job use a rag or towel (paper or cloth) to sponge out the extra lubricant! I would say a few good hit after that and it should turn. I really hope it will move from there. When the ring starts to move prepare your rags to wipe the top of the gas pump of any big pool of PB Blaster. There is usually a o-ring under it, make sure to keep it and not let it fall inside the tank. Sometimes the new o-rings aren't a perfect fit and you will need to compare the old one with the new one.
