Additional tips - For smaller bass or treble hook baits, you'll probably need to flatten down the barb with pliers then you may have to carefully enter through the gills to get the proper angle for gut hook removal.

Overview - My first gut hooked fish in over two years. I bombed a 55-60 yard cast straight to the fountain in the middle of the pond and couldn't really tell the fish had taken the bait because of the slight bow in the line. I was also using KVD fishsticks crawfish attractant, so the combination of my delayed hookset and use of attractant allowed the fish to swallow the bait.

I watched this video yesterday. Just today I caught a beautiful 5.59 lbs bass that was a full 21". I looked to remove the hook and I saw I had guthooked the fish. I thought the fish was going to die, as most of the fish I try to remove the guthook from do. Luckily, I remembered this video and was able to work the hook out with little problems. You saved that monster's life by making this video. Thanks, 1rod1reel!!!

@@rey-jq4bc IMO 21" is way too big to eat. You gotta leave that fish in the water to breed. I'm not judging you though, at least you'd eat it. Maybe you meant if he ended up killing it a back-up plan would be to eat it. But yeah almost any fish is edible if you cut the bloodline out of the muscles.

Get a good pair of fairly long hemostats. They have loops for your fingers at one end just like scissors and you'll have much better control when grabbing and manipulating fish hooks with them. After all, they're meant to be surgical tools. No one uses an all in one tool for surgery and for good reason! LOL That all in one tool you have is too bulky, clumsy and hard to see around due to it's size, esp if you happen to catch a smaller fish with a smaller mouth. I have a pair of hemostats in my tackle box all the time. Very handy.

Damn good idea! Been fishing for 17 years and never thought of pulling the hook out backwards! XD Additionally, if the gut hook it worse, where the point is unexposed I'd push the point of the hook through its throat tissue and use wire cutters to cut off the point/barb then remove the hook. Hurts the fish a bit but it heals faster than letting the hook rust out for several weeks.

Per a large conservationist study, 25% of fish die when using any method to remove a gut hooked fish. Yet 100% fish lived just cutting the line and gently removing the plastic lure and letting the fish go. They found that the fish have a natural way of expelling the hook through healing after a short time

Great video. I wish I'd have seen this before going fishing today. I hooked a nice 4 pounder that got gut hooked. I tried to work it out but the barb wouldn't let me, so I forcefully pulled the hook out with my pliers. It didn't "take out" a big chunk of its esophagus but it definitely ripped a small part of it's guts/esophagus area. The fish swam off healthily enough. Do you think it will die? I certainly hope not but it's obviously possible. Do all fish that when the hook is just "pulled out" die? I'll never do this again after seeing this video however. Thanks.

You taught me something...perhaps I can teach you something. You brought the fish out at :31. You put him back in at 2:31. Next time, keep your pliers close by. I keep mine on my belt with a tether so I don't accidentally drop them in the water. A few additional unnecessary seconds out of the water especially for a gut hooked fish (bleeding or not) could be the difference between that fish living and dying. Thank you again for posting this video.

@mattsloan32
@mattsloan32 6 лет назад
If they are deeply gut hooked the best option is to trim the line as close as possible and release the fish. Fish have an amazing capacity to shed hooks. They can literally poop the hook out days later. Trying to remove a deep gutted hook can dramatically reduce the chances of the fish to recover. Not bashing this video. In this situation you did the correct thing.

Just use barbless hooks, easy removal , ive never had fish come off due to barbless hooks. Had fishing engulf hooks right into there stomachs , that's when u have to be very careful to not damage any organs. And if hooks lodged so very far or ur struggling, bring hook cutters, cut the point of the hook, make sure to remove point then remove hook.

What do you suggest for a gut hooked pickerel? My go to strategy has always been to grab the hook with pliers, rip it out with all my strength. Then as hard as I can throw said pickerel at a rock. Spit on it. Then punt kick it as far into the lake as possible. Usually works fine.

Guy hooked a flounder recently and because of their small mouths I couldn't get it out so I just cut it off, felt kinda bad but I heard somewhere that they tend to just throw them up most of the time anyway

Call me stupid , but..ive seen several of these videos & STILL dont see how its really done? How do you dislodge the barb?? Am i missing something? Seems like once you grab the hook , the barb is still caught?
@areyes3765
@areyes3765 9 лет назад
the easiest way is to just use barbless hooks, smash the barb down, since I catch and release I do it anyway even if people say you loose fish that way, personally I haven't lost any fish because of the barb not being there, it's so much easier to remove the hook in any situation

I caught a 4lber today on a frog . I got it to the bank and the frog just fell out so I didn't tear his mouth or throat up. But the bass was bleeding from the gills and had spot on it's side that looked like a strawberry. I don't know if he crashed into an underwater rock or what. When I put him back into the water (after getting a picture) he struggled for several minutes before finally taking off. Is there a way to avoid them going belly up?
@1Rod1ReelFishing
@1Rod1ReelFishing 8 лет назад
+DrHogfan the spot was a prior infection, not caused by you. If the bass was bleeding from the gills your hook probably grazed it when you set the hook, also just bad luck. Make sure you don't keep it out of the water for more than 30 seconds at a time, if you need to for photos let the fish rest in the water, then pull it out for a quick photo

Can you make a video showing the best way to remove a frog from a bass's mouth? Cause I know it's kinda harder than a regular hook because the usually swallow it with the hook backwards.

What color soft plastic would you recommend for green stained water (clarity: 2ft maybe). I often get bites off tequila sunrise color but its either hit or miss, I need to find a go to color. What do you think.?
@1Rod1ReelFishing
@1Rod1ReelFishing 9 лет назад
+Tyler Betz black/blue, solid white, or some type of green pumpkin/chartreuse would work well

I usually just cut the line if the bass is not bleeding
@mr.eiesland2122

Excellent advice. Sometimes I'm afraid it's a little to far gone. Best thing to do at that point is just cut the line and hope the fish lives right?
@1Rod1ReelFishing
@1Rod1ReelFishing 9 лет назад
+Jay Eiesland if its too far and can't be removed just cut the line like u said, sometimes the bass can poop out the hook haha ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qR8L3MnfgQ4.html

I have a question. the pond near my house only has two spots to fish, and the pond isn't very accessible because not many people fish there. I constantly see big bass surfacing by the Lilly pads and eating flies landing on the water. The problem is there is so much grass matts and weeds underwater, I can barely throw any lure other than top water. I have seen bass eye the frog down, but never strike it. My only success there was catching a bass off a maggot and many sunfish. Do you recommend any lure that could make bass strike and stay weed less, Thanks.
