Learn how to remove a rusted water heater element easily in this video. Save money on replacing a water heater by learning this hack I discovered. I was trying to remove and replace a water heater element from a hot water heater inside a mobile home. I thought I could easily fix this hot water heater without replacing it with a new water heater. My problem was that the water heater element was rusted out and corroded. No matter what I tried to remove it…. the water heater element didn’t want to unscrew. I tried the water heater element removal tool from Home Depot. Didn’t work. I tried a 1” 1/2 socket with a long breaker bar. Didn’t work. The pipe wrench didn’t work. I tried to loosen the rusted water heater element with WD-40 and that didn’t work. I even tried vinegar and water to remove the rust and that didn’t work. My handyman and I applied over 500 pounds of pressure to unscrew the rusted hot water heater element and it didn’t work. Finally, I utilized this NINJA HACK to replace the element without having to go out and spend thousands of dollars to replace the water heater itself. Check it out!!

Thank you so much for sharing this tip. My husband and I were just having the same issue trying to get our old hot water heating elements dislodged so I googled for tips and found your video. We have an impact driver drill so just needed the attachment...worked like a charm😁. Now waiting for tank to refill, hopefully replacing the elements and thermostat has it working like new again. Thanks again for taking the time to share your fix for this common problem.

FYI Don’t use the impact wrench to install the new heating element, use the heating element wrench (six bucks at Home Depot). And hand tighten it to the point it doesn’t leak. I agree this video should have a million likes because it could save a lot of headaches and save people a lot of money. Nice job!

There Is next to nothing on those elements for a socket to get any kind of grip on. I had to grind the face of an impact wrench socket down so that it fit, and gripped. Those are made out of hardened tool steel… Took forever to remove maybe a 16th or an eighth of an inch of it to bring the flutes closer to the tiny hex ring on the element. It was all in vain, however because the impact wrench finally broke it loose aI was able to turn it but once the threads were clear I could hardly pull it out because the small remains of the aluminum sheath and the coiled heating element wire were thoroughly embedded in a huge monolith of limestone accretion. I decided it was time for a new water heater, so I had to try to get the old one out… I wondered why only about 5 gallons of water drained out of the tank of a 40 gallon water heater… That’s how big that giant cylinder of limestone was. That’s how hard Texas Hill Country water is. My hefty son and I managed to ‘walk’ this abomination out the door and out into the yard. The combination of the heater components and probably a cylinder 18 inches in diameter and 4 feet long of completely waterlogged limestone must have been in excess of 300 pounds, because the two of us should have been able to at least pick it up off the ground, but we tried and we couldn’t. I didn’t fully comprehend the situation until we got here with the brand new replacement, and how obvious it was that it was light enough for one person to maneuver quite easily. Live and learn I guess…

The date was April 1st, 2024. The impending battle between myself and the frigid hot water heater intensified. First it went well, watched a generic video, had the covers off, plastic guard, shut off the power, even used a voltmeter to confirm. But little did I know, the HWH had a secret weapon - the two most solid, rusted, calcified screw in heating elements that even existed. My weapon was a cheap socket from Lowes. Hammer, no. Grease, no. Wd40, no. Just sheer strength, no. And im 6'4 and about 190, so I had my whole weight behind it. Nothing. The HWH had me. But then, out of nowhere, a RU-vid video from you, recommending a 38mm socket and impact driver. A quick $23 dollar trip to AutoZone, and I had a chance. Anyway, long story long, it worked and I feel like this day I made a friggin' difference. Appreciate your advice and I share this immortal victory with you. What a triumph!

God bless you, brother. I saw this video at 2:30 AM and went back to sleep happy as a pig in mud. Bought an impact wrench at Harbor Freight, and 1 1/2" six point socket from Amazon, ground the bevel off so it was dead flat against the element and Boomshakkalakkah ! Three tries and it was outta there ! I worked on that sucker for about 3 hrs a couple of months back and have been licking my wounds wondering to to try next. If I die before you I will see you coming and tell Peter to let you in. You are my new hero.

I have to tell you! I tried everything and looked all over RU-vid looking for an answer. My BIL was helping me and we were getting ready to go buy a 6 sided 1 1/2 socket from Oreilly Auto Parts. Since this video didn't have many views I kinda discounted it but I kept thinking we haven't tried that yet. My BIL was also skeptical since we had already tried a 12 sided socket on a long ratchet without success. After we returned with the 6 pt socket and tried it on the ratchet, again without success, I said "Let me go get the impact wrench just for SAG" not thinking it was going to work. Stuck it on there and held it as close to level on the element as possible and just gave it some really short bursts expecting it to slip. It never slipped and within 5 seconds it was out!!! I had already priced new hot water heaters at HD and was committed to getting a new one. I can't thank you enough! The RU-vid community comes thru again!!!

Omg we have been without hot water going on two weeks now and us girls are getting so frustrated. We’re in a mobile home also and my husband along with brothers and nephews have been trying to get that darn element out! I was laying here just now and I said “let me google why it’s so hard to take out the element”. Your video was exactly us with running to the store and buying that same socket and nothing. Using that basic dumb tool that is supposed to take it off easy but nope does not work. Your video is exactly us right now! We were about to run and go buy a water heater but we MUST try this now!! I don’t have water heater money!! I’m showing this video to my husband and PRAY it works!!! Thank you!

Really appreciate you. I spent 2 days trying to break loose the upper element. Bought the element tool and the 1 1/2 socket; Nothing would break it loose. Had someone else help and they couldn't break it loose. Was looking at needing to buy a new water heater. Then, ran across your video. I didn't have an impact wrench, so had a borrow one. It broke the element loose in 3 seconds. It was a huge relief, and the water heater is back to operational. Cannot image the $1,000s of dollars you have saved and will save people.

I had mine on low setting and it wouldn’t come off, I turned it on high and it came off in about 30 seconds…* $250.00 impact wrench- cheaper than a new water heater. Thanks for the info. Thanks to this vid, I tried the impact wrench with success. Had purchased a 12 pt 1.5 in socket which wouldn't grab due the beveled edges not up to 14 years rust. Will return that. O'reily Auto had a 6 pt version, so bought that. Still couldn't use it with 1/2" breaker bar. Problem was keeping socket flat to element. So, got 1/2" impact wrench to push tight onto element. About 8 short bursts of the driver later, the element came loose. Worked the element back and forth to ensure the thread didn't get crossed. Then unscrewed element and removed it. Two lessons: 1. 6 pt socket gets good grip 2. Auto Zone apparently loans a 1.5 in socket -- part of their front axle loaner tools! Could have Saved $22 purchase.

Thank you for sharing this amazing solution! We found your video, and did what you said and Wow! instant success! Brilliant!! Our water heater is in a mobile home. We sent the serial number to the manufacturer to find out how old the water heater is and turns out it is 39 years old! Incredible! Once we got the element out we were able to replace and it still works. Thanks!

Thank you! This and using a wet/dry vac with a 1 inch hose attached to get the mineral build up out (saw in another video) make this an easy job.

Thank you so much for this easy fix!! We also tried WD40 and descales, with no success. After a quick trip to Auto Zone, it was a 5 second fix and the new heating element is in. Your brain was really thinking!!

The was huge!!!!! I had the same problem and plumber said he couldn't get it off and used heat and bent his breaker bar (not sure how that happened) but I went to Napa and they had a 1 1/2 socket for $31. I put my inpact on it and after a few knocks it BROKE FREE!!! SAVED ME $1700 for a new unit! wow! I changed both elements. What a great video i am forever grateful !

Thanks for posting your story. I have been fighting this same problem for most of the day. Like you, I bought the special heating element socket. That didn't work, so I went and bought the 1 1/2 in. socket, and that didn't work either. I used the breaker bar, a heat gun, and finally got my Dremmal out to try cutting it out. Needless to say, none of those worked. I finally gave up for the day and took a cold shower 😅. The thought of using an impact gun had crossed my mind, but I haven't tried it yet. I will give it a try tomorrow. It seems that most things aren't as easy as I am led to believe. Thanks again for the tip.

Thanks thank you one of the most valuable RU-vid videos I've ever listened to. I already had air compressor right by the water heater and I own a impact wrench. I did have to use a breaker bar a little bit after I use the impact wrench but it workers; and I am very happy. Thank you I had the tools ride under my nose
