Wait I thought all tire guys had to use that Ugg Aaa Dugga NASCAR Impact gun on the tire? Apparently thats what the guys who installed my daughters tires last time did. Very good vid and tip. It's not cool when your baby girl is stuck on the intestate with 5 rounded off lugs. Thanks this was the only thing that worked.
@Motorcarnut
@Motorcarnut Год назад
Thanks! No, every nut and bolt on a vehicle has a torque spec and the lug nuts are no exception. Tire guys barely have any automotive knowledge and use impacts because they are fast but don’t care if you can never get the lugs off again.
@jenniferelliott9368
@jenniferelliott9368 Год назад
AAA woman here and yes I use an impact. However, I'm always very careful not to over tighten the lug nuts. It's mostly the MEN who don't pay attention to the torque that should be used for each vehicle. They end up over tightening the lugs, stripping the lugs, they misthread the lugs on, and so on. Which can and will lead to even bigger problems. These guys that do this are trying to be the fastest...WRONG. I don't want to be the fastest! I want to do it right the first time and send my members off safely. As a former RN I have seen more than my share of vehicle mishaps. Also don't let them use the compressed air impacts either. Most shops use them because they are able to do the job faster and make more money. I'm with this gentleman when he says if you see them pull out an impact gun of any kind...run! Unless you see them grab a Manuel or have a chart that tells them the torque and you see them adjust it. Hell ask to watch them adjust it and make sure it's right yourself. Better yet learn how to change your own tires in case of a flat. It's not hard...at all! Good luck and stay safe!!!

I agree an impact wrench should not be used on lug nuts. Since you're always working on cars, I would like to get your opinion on this. I believe the main problem with stuck lug nuts and stuck wheels to hubs is the aluminium rims that are used today. Steel and aluminium do not go together well under certain circumstances. One being when you add salt, I think it gets a chemical reaction (Galvanic Corrosion?) that almost equals welding them together. I live in Minnesota and they use a lot of salt in the winter. I don't ever remember having this problem or I should say it was never this bad when all they used were steel rims. Let me know what you think? Do you notice the problem more with aluminum rims? Thanks, David
@Motorcarnut
@Motorcarnut Месяц назад
You're a 100% correct. Most of the times the corrosion is so bad it compromises the wheel and hub. Putting a little grease between the hub and rim and some on the lugs goes a long way and avoids most problems especially in the salt belt areas like here in NY.
