Today I will show you how to DIY removing a VW alternator. This is a common VW failure, and is a VERY easy DIY. Before removing the alternator, you will need to remove the serpentine belt, and tensioner.

Charles. it's nice to see responsible techs/mechanics or others at salvage yards that do not go in unbolt an alternator or other electrical item then just cut the wires off instead of taking the time to unbolt and unplug the wires. I hate that when people hack up the vehicles especially the wire looms.

I'm sure someone might have said this but just in case. It is a good idea for anyone that might attempt this to disconnect the battery first. Safety first and all that. Great video as usual.

What an amazing video. I've been watching videos forever trying to find where that damn wiring connection is and nobody shows it. They just say "take it off" but don't show it. In two minutes you showed me what most guys can't in 10. The camera work, explanation, and technique were on point. Thanks for a to-the-point video.

I had to swap an alternator on my old 1.8T AWD Golf before. I remember having to take the throttle body off to get clearance to free it. Not nearly as much room as on this 2.0!

Tip if your alternator doesn’t just wiggle out. Get a pry bar or piper a use it to lever it out. Mine was galled up but with the bar from a pump jack I was eventually able to get it out.

You helped me a lot. I need assistance though. Polo 6n2 2001, 1.4 16 V, eng. AUA, alternator bosch, 90A. It killed my battery, checked with multimeter, it was unstable and peaked at 13 with high rev. I removed the alternator, checked brushes but were half way there, copper was clean and nice. Checked the bearing, was running nice and smooth. I ll take it to a car electrician but i d like to know/learn where the problem could eslewhere be? Voltage regulator? Could it be the coil?

How do you route the alternator out of a 2000 Beetle 1.8T? I got the idler out, alternator bolts out, but picking whether to take it out the top or bottom seems to be like pixking between plague or cholera.

I'm finding that out is a lot harder than in. The broken one too several minutes of rocking back and forth to get loose. The new one is fantastically stubborn about actually fitting around the outside of the bracket/bolt hole. I've tried almost every tool I have. Thoughts?

I have an '81 VW truck where I want to replace the front belt. Easy, I thought. Just loosen those top alternator bolts, tilt up the alternator and switch belts. Except there's that bolt in the bottom, behind the timing belt cover, that I didn't know about. I couldn't see what kind or size of bolt that was. I hope it's an 8mm bolt like in your video and not one of those star bolt things! It looks the same as mine. Thanks for the video. It gives me hope that it might be almost as easy as I'd hoped.

+tiny249jetta awesome!! We never did a video on the runner valve. They are not to bad to replace on the 12v. You don't have to take the manifold out. Remove the battery and you can sneak it out. I'll tell you that I've seen a few that were worn so bad they needed a new intake. But that was just a few

HumbleMechanic Heh, it was a pita , but I changed the fried regulator on the wife's old mk4 Jetta vr6 without pulling the alternator. It probably saved about 3 minutes overall versus pulling it out of the car 😂

should mention that the + cable on the alternator is live unless the battery is removed or drained just in case someone gets sapped

Disconnect the battery negative terminal before working on the alternator. Also, would be a great idea to do a short video on how to unclip those fabulous VW connectors without snapping the retaining tang off . . .

I had to take my alternator out to get to the thermostat but how the hell do you get it back in? It wont sit back on the bracket and not sure how to get those threaded shits in the alternator pushed in so it can be reinstalled again.

I'm having an issue in my 2009 VW taureg. Doing this job and your videos have been super helpful so far. But now I'm stuck after the main 2 alternator bolts..I love how the video cuts directly to you just wiggling it off the thing...but mine WILL NOT MOVE 😭 I found another video that mentioned it has some sort of retaining function to those screws..but I can't get it 😢 the bolts are out but this thing is not going anywhere.

interesting im having the same problem with a 2004 vw golf. thinking of using penetrating oil and a rubber mallet. I see your comment was posted 1 year ago, did you have any luck getting it off and if so what did the trick. I think im going to make some videos fixing up my vw because surely others have the same problem.

Mallet will do the trick or, go have a beer break, come back, stand up on the radiator support and with steel toed boots give a good stomp lol

Charles, how long does an alternator typically last in an MK4 GTI? I have a '04 GTI VR6 with the original alternator. Should the voltage regulator be replaced as preventative maintenance at a predetermined interval or does alternator/voltage-regulator maintenance/replacement depend on other factors or symptoms? Is there a way to test reliability of an alternator that currently seems to work fine and does charge the battery or do alternators just suddenly fail? Is there a way to determine how much life is left in an alternator and/or the voltage regulator without removing the assembly? The car is 15 years old. Unsure how long the voltage regulator brushes last or how long the whole alternator assembly lasts. I appreciate all of your great videos. Your expert advice on things to consider regarding preventative maintenance on alternators and/or related electrical components would also be appreciated. Some background: last week I drove the car in the rain and almost stalled the engine but recovered before it stalled. In the split second when the engine almost stalled, an alternator dummy light came on for less than a second on the digital display in the center of the instrument cluster. This is what's causing me to question the alternator. Should I be concerned or not? The yellow check engine light did not illuminate. Great video, thumbs up!

I've had a bad battery cause a similar issue on an 11 Silverado. Engine nearly stalled and multiple warning lights for airbags, traction etc flashed for a moment. My 2.0 Jetta has over 200k, all original serpentine assembly. The bearing on the alternator is causing the belt to vibrate quite a bit now though. So... hard to say. Autozone can check the health of your battery and alternator for free though if you ask. :)

@@AltruisticWarrior I appreciate the advice. The same alternator is still installed and is now 18 years old. Still working well. I'm now tentatively planning on buying a pickup truck but keeping the GTI. Rationale; I want to refresh most of the engine accessory components under the hood and suspension. This will take time. I'll need another vehicle while the work is being done. However, once the GTI is overhauled, I should be able to continue relying on it for at least another 100K miles or more. The car is reliable now and recently I took it on a long road trip, but due to age, its reliability is cause for concern. By the way, I like your screen name. You seem like a good person.

@@Catman1987 How many miles are on your GTI? My 2004 GTI VR6 has 160K miles. I'm guessing that since the alternator and its brushes are constantly working to keep the battery charged, that milage on the vehicle is possibly the biggest factor in how long an alternator lasts. Am I wrong? Are other factor such as age or environmental conditions (extreme hot/cold weather) more relevant?

@@RedondoBeach2 i own a 2001 golf gti vr6 12 valve that i bought at a police auction in bad shape for 1,800.00 dollars . It has bilstein lowering kit ,brembo brakes and a racing exhaust system . It has 82,000 miles on it .

@@HumbleMechanic Do you know if it's the same procedure on an Skoda Superb 1.8T 2003? The lower bold that holds the gen has not enough travel as it hits the fan, and don't think there's enough room to remove the fan without having to tear into a lot of other stuff in the front (radiators etc). Lifting the engine some might clear the bolt, but wanted to check if there's some way of wiggling out the generator anyways?

+Doug Taylor they are a bit of a pain. Front has to come off. I like to take the bolt from the crossing AC line. That give more rooms

Do I need to remove the belt tensioner to replace the alternator or can I just release the tension. I'm guessing part of the tensioner is in the way of a bolt or something?

The tensioner blocks one of the bolts.

+Garth Goldberg either one could be a good find. It all depends on the car. The compressor is a similar removal, just have to add the a/c lines.

Hey Sir. I had a person snap the top alternator bolt today..... It's somewhat threaded in but busted in half . How much do you think I'm looking at if I take it to a shop to remove it?

Anyone doing a 1t3 vw tournan 2011 and up it’s totally different you will need to drop the ac unit and Undo torc converter mount so you can wiggle the engine and pull the altornator from under the car much more harder job!!!

How about when rocking the alternator back and forth doesn’t work? I have one right now that seems to be hung up on the alternator’s threaded cylindrical insert at the hole on the bracket that the upper bolt goes through. It pivots at that point (the lower part is free), but will not come out. What to do?

+soundman447 hahahah yeah that's a whole different animal for sure. Luckily there are way more 2.0l than V6 Passats. I'd love to be able to do this for every VW out there. I think we have another run of pull videos planned in 2017.

Yeah I would have kept mine but it needed a heater core and that was going to cost to much for a car with almost 200k on it.

I haven't seen the belt removal videos, but is it really a seven-hour total job to remove and replace the alternator in a 2019 VW Jetta? That's what the shop charged me at $155 an hour. Based on my call to the dealership, they charge $199 per hour. Thank you in advance.

Hello mate, Great educational video, thanks for that. Just quick question. I'm having almost same problem with VW Polo 9n 2003 1.4tdi. In cold day started the car drove very little journey 3 mins, stopped in very at shop, then tried to start wouldn't start at all. Called breakdown Engineer, who came and jumpstarted the car, tested and turned out the alternator wasn't charging hence drained the Battery, but when he put rev up little higher something around 1500rmp or above and let it go on idle running it started charging. he told me there's intermittent alternator problem and left. I have tested since then few days with multi meter and every time before starting Battery read at 12.6v (which is perfect), when started and engine running 11.5-12.6v (wasn't charging) but I rev up and let it go starts charging at 13.5-14.2v. My question is: How do i identify where is the problem? Whether Alternator brushes or there's any cable connection problem such as break between battery and alternator? I'd like to avoid removing whole Alternator as I don't have much knowledge ( first timer) and tools, also in case problem is with cable or anything else. Any suggestion or advice much appreciated. Could low voltage comming out from the alternator, or a bad cable connection cause problems to my tachometer? I Own a 2001 1.8T New Beetle and the tacho is dead. Crank saft sensor is new but the problem remains.

it could. But That is usually a ground or a bad cluster issue

I could not get my alternator out of my 2.5 mkV rabbit. I had to take it to someone. I think he said he got it out by removing the RH headlight.

HumbleMechanic You need to pull the front out of mine to remove it, not an inch of clearance from the front to the alternator. No space even to get a wrench in maybe without the socket. Best way to it is to remove the bumper install the 2 "pipes" and just pull the front a bit. Have a nice day.
