This video will show you a few ways to test your alternator to see if it is bad, is going bad or is good. A good alternator will show a charge at around 14.2-14.7v while the car is running and under an electrical load it wont drop below 13v.

Hey Chris, I'm a retired auto mechanic, with 4 years experience at General Motors Assy Division, (Back from 1978--1981), then 15 years as ASE cert master at a Chevrolet Dealer, then 4 years at an automotive mechanical claims facility (Call center for under 800.00 repairs). I have to thank and congratulate you for the outstanding job you're doing. You are helping people and asking nothing in return but for people to subscribe to your channel. You are helping thousands of people from being fleeced by the people that take advantage of people that don't know anything about the automobile or the industry that's giving them a bad name due to greed and corruption. My guess is the thumbs down people are the ones losing money thanks to your RU-vid help. I just want to thank you and salute your help to people that are tired of being screwed by the shops and mechanics that are more concerned with making money than keeping customers happy.

Renee, your post made me tear up. I am sad to hear that you lost your husband. I commend and admire you for having the strength to help yourself. I sense that you are a kind lady. I am on my own too and it is tough when we have to do everything ourselves. It IS kind of fun though when someone at work will talk about a car issue and we can pipe it, "have you checked ______?" and share the wisdom we learned from Chris (only we don't cite him). Even the men at work look at me and ask, "how do you know that?!" I fib and say, "I know some mechanics. I watched. I learned. I fixed some cars." 😆

I really enjoy your tips and this one saved me a ton! Our 6 year old Lexus had trouble starting so I took it to Lexus. They said I needed a new battery ($400) and a new alternator ($600). They charged me $120 to diagnose! I guess I should have just gone to an auto store! Looking at the battery I noticed it was the original and there was a label indicating an 84 month warranty. I asked the service advisor and then he told me that I was eligible for a 25% proration off a new battery so it would be “only” $300 but he highly recommend terminal cleaning and protection for an additional $25. I was pissed so I paid the $120 diagnostic fee and drove it home. I went to Costco and bought a larger AGM battery (27F vs 24F) and it fits perfect. I then followed your steps and discovered that the alternator is fine. I could kick myself for taking it to the dealer for diagnostics but I didn’t know how to check the alternator until later. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Shouldn't drop at all. Long as you have anough alternator to created the DC voltage and current. Also proper wire size and terminations. If your system drops below idle no load voltage, you have an issue. The entire vehicle and audio slash lighting systems are being under fed/performance.

Can’t thank you enough. You helped me determine that my alternator was, in fact, bad but more importantly when it came time for me to replace it I paid extra close attention to the wires and bolts only to find that my negative terminal on the battery was rusty, the chassis ground was loose, AND the chassis ground wire was frayed. As soon as I replaced the alternator and negative terminal wiring my car started right up and it sounds better than ever. Thank you so much.

Pulled alternator and cleaned/sanded brackets and bolts and boom! Alternator putting out 14.4V instead of 13.8.. under load it was below 12.75V before cleaning. I know if you've done a video on something, I can trust the info. My 99 Camaro was parked for like 11 days and when I went to start it, it was dead, so I jumped it and thought nothing of it, knowing I do have a light that stays on a little too long...and then it wouldn't start again when I was gonna go to the gym yesterday. This video helped me figure out that it was the alternator and not the battery, so one online order, 20-30 minutes of work later and I can now tell that my suspicions about the alternator being bad were correct. I work from home, so it was great to do this faster than a mechanic could b/c there weren't other cars in line ahead of me and I didn't need to take it elsewhere. Thx again Chris.

I can't thank you enough! I just bought a car and the dealer said he just replaced the battery. After a few weeks, my cars power seemed low. With the alternator running the battery was at 12.3v, yikes! I found your video did the test and had about 1.4v voltage drop from the alternator case to the negative battery post. I ran a new ground from the harness that connects to the battery to a bolt on the frame and voila! 13.8v. I believe after the battery charges a bit the car will be over 14v. Oh and I checked all of the other spots you recommended and they were within spec.

+shane Blandford-scherr, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason but I hope you see this. If it only shows 11v then it can be a bad alternator, connection, or voltage regulator. Did you do the voltage-drop test I showed at the end of this video? That will let you know if the connection is bad. I think you just need a new alternator. The car is old and 170k miles is a lot of miles.

hey Chris finally ran that wire have had it for a while now just procrastinating but still no dice there is no fluctuation in voltage when reving the engine .My un trained mind instantly thinks bad alternator could autozone have lied to me two times on separate occasions in different cities tuff one to believe what I did discover is that there is some resistance at the terminals from alternator to battery to fuse box but but it seemed like the outer surface there is continuity so if you have anything that comes to mind really would appreciate it

Explained great like in all of your videos! I would also suggest checking the connection of the actual battery terminal to the clamp itself and the battery cable where it connects to the clamp. That's where probably 90+% of the problems lie. Be careful with probing the alternator output with the probe! Touching the alternator output and the alternator case ground or any other ground will make a big spark! It could also damage the alternator!

This video saved me a couple hundred bucks just today. Had an issue where the battery gauge on the instrument cluster would be at 14 while driving then dip down to ~12 for a moment or two then bottom out like it was dead. Has happened intermittently over the last 2 weeks. Wasn't running rough or anything so drove it home. Sitting in park with it running, was sitting at 11.6v, understandable given that I had just driven it ~30 miles with no charge going on. Was just about to submit the order for a new alternator when I decided to test it out. Went through with this video and found that the battery-to-chassis connection had a bunch of rust on it (it's a 1999 Cherokee XJ, rust comes standard). Took a wire brush to every connection and then replaced the battery terminal ends. Cranked it up and let it run for ~25 mins with everything from the window defroster to the hi-beams running. Barely dipped below 14v. Thanks for the no-frills videos, ChrisFix! And a side note for anyone seeing this, the videos on how to super-detail your car are absolute S-Tier. I do these deep cleans 2x yearly and my vehicles look amazing

I want you to show the output voltage of the alternator, i.e measured across its B terminal and its ground. However what you have displayed here is sufficient to give rough but adequate measurement of alternator performance. Measuring at battery terminals are usually sufficient for that purpose, unless we want further details. As for my car, when the engine is off, my battery voltage is about 13V; when the engine is on and no usage of other electric related parts, the battery voltage is about 14.5V. The battery is new, so that is expected. :)
