How to Remove Acrylic Paint from Carpet & Upholstery

NOTE: If you have oil paint, the alcohol will not work but the brush cleaner and restorer will dissolve it. Most likely mineral spirits will as well but it has more of an odor to it and is flammable, so you will need to wash the area thoroughly with soap and water several times to remove all traces.

absorbent cloth rag (I used a microfiber cloth.) goo.gl/3sgci2
1. First, test your cleaning solvent on an area that cannot be seen to make sure the fibers and dyes of your carpet will not be harmed.
2. Saturate the stain with your solvent of choice (Alcohol or Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner)
3. Allow to soak in for about 5 minutes.
4. Using butter knife or palette knife scrape dried paint off the dried paint.
5. Rub and pat with your cleaning rag to remove loosened paint.
6. Keep repeating steps 2 - 5 until all paint is moved.
7. Mop up excess solvent with clean rag.
You may need to shampoo the carpet afterwards. I have not found this to be necessary as I have never had a residue remain.
Beware of staining colors! Some pigments absorb more readily into fibers rather than sitting on top of them. Trying to clean them MAY make a bigger stain. Some common staining colors are:
All the phthalocyanine pigments (phthalo blue, phthalo green, etc.)
Blacks (Mars Black, Ivory Black, Carbon black, etc.)
Quinacridone colors (my vintage western shirt STILL has some quinacridone crimson on it from years ago!)

B&J "The Masters" brush cleaner soap will remove oil paint from carpet very well. I dropped a glob of oil on my brand new carpet in my studio the other day. A heavy mixture of ultramarine and raw umber mixed mixed to a purpleish black. I was certain that I had ruined the carpet. "The Masters" lifted the paint right out of the carpet. It's water soluble so there's no need to worry about harsh chemicals damaging the fibers. Happy to see that you were able to remove the stains from your affected areas. I would be concerned with alcohol or other chemicals damaging the upholstery on the padding underneath your upholstery on an automotive application. It's easy to distort the fibers. Thanks for your suggestions, they're very helpful.

I use the da vinci soap paint brush cleaner 😊 it's more better and stronger than the liquid brush cleaner. It works on your clothes, bedding, brushes it's fantastic and you add a bit of water to it and leave to soak for a while then you scrub and it takes out the paint and the stains. I'm an artist and I get paint on everything 😊. My daughter bought me this soap and I've had it for 4 years now and it gets paint out your brushes after the acrylic is dried the bristles together. But I first soak the brushes in boiling hot water then when the brushes had soften I rub the soap on it and leave it for a hour then I scrub it with a green scourer and nail brush. My brushes are cleaned. Try this soap get it from cowling and wilcox and any art supplier 😊

If u really want to get acrylic paint out of a carpet take an old toothbrush and soap and scrub it while it’s still wet. If there’s a glob of it u want to take card stock paper or thick paper and scoop it up then use the toothbrush

For acrylic paint, water and dish soap may work very well without fading the fabric. Just try to keep the stain from drying. If you delicately rub dish soap and water it will dissolve after a few minutes of rubbing. It just needs good soaking and delicate rubbing for a few minutes to get out. Tried the gray artist soap on a different accident with acrylic paint, BUT I got my linen blouse bleached with it. So unfortunately artist's soap causes fading/bleaching of linen fabrics, denim, and whatever else that might fade.

Im so sad i got acrylic paint on my carpet and even if i put EVERYTHING it still stained light blue and nothing works.i poured alcohol,acetone, dish soap,washing machine detergent, whitening powder for washing machine, 2 other stain cleaners, and even bleach for a night! but is still the same blue!! What the heckkk 🙁

Murphy's Oil Soap works well cleaning brushes, it would probably work well on carpets too???

Tina Clark i've heard that Murphy's oil soap for cleaning brushes and I've tried it many times. (I didn't even like it for cleaning my wet brushes. I found Dr. Bronner's works much better for me.) I've never had any luck in getting dried acrylic paint out of brushes with Murphy's oil soap. Perhaps you use oil paint? If you've had luck with it, please make us a video and share it! I just haven't had any success with it so I never recommend it. But, I'm very glad you found something that works for you! Whatever works best!

Hi, Michele, I did have luck with Murphy's for getting dried acrylic paint out of brushes. I left it in over night, and then used a stiff scrub brush to get out the stubborn bits. I would love to make a video but I've never done that before and wouldn't know where to begin.

What do you think about Amodex, have you tried it? Also you really need to shampoo that seat with a rug doctor or similar in-order to get ride of the oils from the brush cleaner

Oh boy! Do I have a story for you! One time when I was driving around Canada teaching workshops I had some wet paintings that I wanted to save so I stuck them up on the shelf behind the backseat. Unfortunately, I hit a bump and all the wet paint came pouring down the seats of my, rental car! I was freaked out that I would have major damage. I pulled over and worked and worked on those seats with the brush cleaner and restorer then I had to wash and wash the oily residue off with soapy water. But to my great relief, it worked! I can’t say for sure it will work for you because it depends on the color as I mentioned in the video. Some colors leave a permanent stain. But please give it a try. What have you got to lose?
