Here is a short run thru of how to remove an Allison 1000 5-Speed transmission from a 2003 GMC Duramax. This process is the same for all 2001-2005 5-Speed trucks. While this process varies for 2005-present 6-Speed trucks.
Steps:
-Remove Starter, tie to frame rail
-Pull off fan (Unless you have a 36mm box end wrench)
-Remove torque converter bolts (x6)
-Remove rear drive shaft
-Remove front drive shaft
-Remove Transmission cross member
-Un-plug all T-case wiring
-Remove T-case breather
-Remove T-case
-Remove all Trans wiring
-Remove fuel line brackets
-Remove exhaust v-band
-Remove Trans cooler lines
-Remove all bell housing bolts
-Remove transmission
