How to remove and reinstall a drill press chuck

I have a 30 year old Craftsman drill press that had a keyed chuck I wanted to replace with a keyless chuck. I hammered, and cussed, and hammered some more. Finally, I cut off the outer part of the chuck and heated up the inner part with a torch,,,,just enough to make it expand a little. I put a chisel in my air hammer, and it finally popped off. I cleaned the 33 jacobs taper, reinstalled my new keyless chuck.

I surfed a lot YT to find a guy who goes to the point. And the type of chuck mount I have. Most of guys around spend half video telling the story of their life! Good job

I picked up the same craftsman drill press for free from a friend. Tried everything to get the chuck off including heating the chuck and cooling the shaft. Impossible. Finally used an angle grinder like you and cut the thing off....ordering a JT33 keyless chuck today...thanks for the advice!

Great! Got the old chuck off on my 9-inch Craftsman…a little propane heat and a small chisel and ball peen hammer to work the gap at the top of the chuck and get it to move…dropped right out. yay!😊

I used a GoPro for a while, but the dang phones are so convenient and they do 4K too. Both vids looked good.

I just bought a used one just like it. Saved me a lot of trouble. Only difference is I put a bowl of ice water on it for an hour then heated it up. Popped right off!

Both Go-pro and camera are good "tools". Use the appropriate tool for the job at hand. I especially like that the go-pro/stand gives a clear and stable picture. BTW, I get a lot of satisfaction from fixing an item than buying a new one.

Dude...Super Glue is fricken magical in the way is just disappears...I have about a dozen partially used tubes all around the house...that I still can't find!

I like that clamp on your drill press. You should super glue a jar to someplace in your shop and store your super glue in it.

Thanks been wanting a keyless chuck a long time but procrastinated. When I get to the end of my hole the drill always spins in the chuck and it’s a pain.

Great video. I have the same drill press which I was almost giving up on. But now I have the answers I need to fix it up as good as new. I have a question. What grit/level of scott bright pad did you use to clean the bed(?). And can I do the same thing on the pedistal(?). Mine is very rusted, even keeping it inside my garage (FL humidity). Peg, I think it was an 80 grit pad. Later, I did the pedestal for the same reason. Rust. Next, I’ve ordered the crank handle for raising and lowering the table. It will be like new after that.

I just love the sounds of a working shop. When all else fails, grab the torch and a hammer. Hiding the model number because they had shame for the made in Taiwan sticker.

The taper on the chuck is a Jacobs taper the the upper taper is a Morse taper.

If it were an American made machine that would be definite, but there are other options... Princess Auto had a half a skid of 5/8" chucks on clearance for $4, looked like JT6 to me so I grabbed 1 for my drill press... Turns out they were B18 taper...

Both your GoPro and camera gave good results. It'll give you the choice to use whichever suits you at the time. If you use headgear to hold it, the GoPro is less cumbersome, I imagine. I'm still getting past the image of you holding the owner's manual. I thought such things burned your fingers, or is it instructions I'm thinking of?

Thank you soooo much for making this vid. I have the exact model and it did not have the chuck key. Could you tell me if your keyless chuck worked out in the long run and where I could purchase one too? Oh, and any other ideas in retrospect about getting that stubborn chuck off beside cuttin/torchin! Again, my thanks…

Go pro is a better picture and sound and the camera is very close. You would do well with either and use whichever is more task friendly at the time of shooting.

pickle fork would of helped a little on this i think but ya thats a stupid design thanks sears for reinventing the wheel on this one

Above the chuck is a bearing. The pickle fork would have put to much side pressure on it.

Nope. When my wife wants me to fix something, I tell her I need a certain tool to do it. Never fails! In fact, that’s how I got the drill press. She said she needed new brakes on her car. I said I couldnt it without a drill press. She needed a new clutch in her car and that got me a concrete hammer drill.

I'm more of a fan of the GoPro. I absolutely hate filming on my phone (iPhone 11 ProMax). I have no idea how people can edit video on a phone. I do all my editing on a laptop, so that means I have to do the opposite (I have to get the video off the phone and onto the laptop). For this I use Google Drive (since I cannot stand iCloud). I hate just about anything "bluetooth" and find it unreliable for most everything except the occasional earbud use. All that being said, I admit I am stuck in my ways.

In case you need to ever do it again they make Jacobs Taper wedges for removing the chuck...

This had no slot for a wedge. The taper up inside the drill press is all one unit including the teeth that drive it. Totally different than a jacobs taper.

@@bctruck No, Brad you are thinking of the Morse Taper, its the one that goes up into the quill. @@bctruck you're not getting nna believe this. I got another of these presses that is brand new, like dead ass been in storage for 25 years and seldom used. Dude looks like he even dressed the belts to keep them from cracking. So the old one is gonna get a new chuck still and I'm going to set it up for heavier work with a fixed table
