Thanks for the video, I'm re-caulking the Becksons in my Hallberg 35 Ketch soon and was looking for exactly the kind of information you posted. I agree with the 100% silicone; as you stated, Beckson specifically calls for it's use. Mike
+Michael Hansen - Thanks for the comments. I will say the first one I did was the hardest (due to not knowing what I would encounter) but over time they really can get done pretty quickly. I hope you enjoyed the video and the rest of them including the recent first 2 in a series on rebuilding/bedding the dorado boxes.
Mike G - I am using 100% silicone. You will find most people will say never use silicone on a boat, however with these Beckson ports it is specifically what the manufacturer recommends. See here for info from Beckson. I hope you found the video useful. www.beckson.com/installport.html
I realize Beckson says 100% Silicone only. But your showing us the bulkhead that is completely destroyed from using 100% silicone caulk. I would be using Sikaflex if it was my boat. The caulk should last as long as the window. Silicone is horrible stuff. It ruined your bulkheads. Such a beautiful boat.
That is one opinion. Most people don’t make the decision on a boat based on the port frames. I would agree stainless would be much better but given how many of these are still out there. The idea was to make a helpful informative video for those with Beckson ports.
I know the old saying. There is no place for silicone on a boat. However Beckson specifically recommends silicone with these particular ports given the material the frames are made of. Here you go. Directly from the manufacturers installation guide. www.beckson.com/installport.html
Normally I would agree with you however the Beckson Ports that are made of non metallic material specifically recommended to use silicone. The silicone is a great sealant but NOT a good adhesive. If you notice on the Beckson ports they are held to the boat by through bolting them so there is not a need for adhesive only sealant. From their installation guide. www.beckson.com/installport.html
@@Svdreamchaser I read the Beckson website and yes it does recommend Silicon. There is a newer product on the market that is a Polyurethane and Silicone formulation called Life Seal by Boat life. It is expensive but my research shows that it is appropriate for plastic Beckson port windows. Sikaflex 291, 3m 420 and other polyurethanes could actually damage the plastic so its either Silicone or Lifeseal. And of course my Store here in Canada is out of stock..... Looks like I am going to be using that old tube of Marine silicone after all...
