Welcome to ShopLifeTV!
In this video I show you step by step how to remove a BMW 2007 550i transmission. This process is similar for E46, E39, as well as many other BMW chassis. Feel free to comment down below, and thanks for watching!

Best and most complete video on how to remove the tranny. I replaced the fluid, filter, seals and both sleeves recently. The most challenging thing was getting the rear sleeve out with the exhaust bracket/cross member. I ended up welding a 10mm external socket inside a 7/8" nut to allow for enough head space to back the bolts out. I could not get the rear sleeve out of any nook or cranny with the small exhaust cross member in. Upon completion I did the alternator bracket seal and cleaned up the oils on the entire engine. The 2005 545i with 78,000 miles now does not leak!!! Okay... maybe the valve cover gaskets weep a bit but it's not leaving a mark everywhere I park it. Now to trace the electrical gremlins. So, Mr ShoplifeTV... you got this BMW dialed.

My favorite RU-vid mechanic! Excellent job. I really wish you'd do a video on replacing the Downpipes on an e60 535i. Started it, then stopped when I realized I had to drop the subframe. If you did a vid showing me how, I would have tackled it for sure. Keep making bmw vids!

Damn bro!!! that explanation remembered me teaching my grandma' how to use my phone lol. you got a subscriber here . I loved it. actually most of RU-vid's videos don't take the time to explain as you did ( maybe they think only techs will be watching their videos lol ) hope you keep it always this way and thanks for doing it on V8's since there are not much videos when I need to work on my 545i and 745i ( I don't like 6 cylinder cars ) .

It's a good idea to keep track of the bolts when unbolting the transmission. I've never taken a transmission out of a BMW, but I used to work for Audi and many of the bolts were different lengths.

This really helped, my friend took his 2007 bmw 550i to a bmw mechanic and he swapped out a part he thought was the problem, and then apparently that didn’t clear the problem. Eventually the mechanic needed to pull the transmission take it apart and he said the transmission no good and needs to be rebuilt or a new one. End of story the mechanic charged about $640 for new transmission part about $13, $400 in labor and the rest in new transmission fluid

I really enjoyed this video, but I have a simple and very important comment. If you want to avoid rapid transmission failure, follow the instructions provided by ZF when you are filling the transmission with oil. It is available online and a printed copy is attached to the oil pan you bought (at least to original ZF parts). Even flow charts are provided to make everything clear. The details are crucially important and can slightly be different for various versions of the transmission. It can even be different for the same transmission (say 6HP26) depending on the make and model of the car so pay attention to all details of the documents provided. The procedure is somewhat more complicated than explained in the video but the details are very-very-very important. Typically, you should rev up the engine and select specific gears to make sure the converter and various parts of the hydraulic system is also filled up with fluid. The complete procedure is something like the following. First fill up the transmission while engine is off, then start engine, continue filling until full and fluid is coming back, then rev up the engine and select prescribed gears for 5-10-20s while continue filling, then keep idling and continue-continue-continue filling until fluid is peeing back. During the whole procedure use a diagnostic tool to monitor trans fluid temperature and make sure the temperature is within the prescribed interval (usually 30-50C). Then close filling hole and do not open if not necessary. If you open it with engine off, fluid will bleed out and you need to start again from the beginning. Again, the importance of meticulously following the instructions can not be overemphasised. If you don't, the tranny will run lean of oil and will die premature death.
