Welcome to my RU-vid channel. This channel is the home for all your vintage Mid-Year Corvette content. In today's video I am removing a taillight panel from a damaged rear section of a C2 Corvette. This panel will become part of the 1963 convertible that I am repairing. I have had a lot of comments about removing body panels using a heat gun. In today's video I put that to the test to try and save both panels that I am working with. Stick around to see the show!
I just finished restoring a 1963 Corvette Split Window and I am starting another split window build but this time its a race car build. I will be making videos every Friday. I will be making videos on my 1963 Corvette Split Window, my dad's 1965 Corvette, my race car split window build, my friends 1960 Corvette, and other projects that I find along the way. Let me know what you think about the video. Enjoy!!
If you are interested in an official MYM hat or if you have any questions please send me an email to midyearmitch@gmail.com.
Check out my Instagram for some behind the scenes pics of my builds.

Sit back and enjoy the show!

Hey there Mitch, And just like that, a new methodology. Technology marches on. The heat method looks pretty slick Take care, Dan

Hey Dan thanks! Yeah this method definitely works well. It might not work well in certain situations but I haven’t really found that yet.

It would be great to see some update videos of your projects, to see how they have progressed once they have gone to their owners.
@MidYearMitch
@MidYearMitch 2 года назад
I can give some little updates but some owners don’t really want the full process on video. They don’t mind me filming my part but they don’t always want their car to be in the limelight. But I’ll give updates where I can. Thanks for letting me know that you would be interested in that.

Nice, you show how you go about it rather than just finished product or partial finish as in other you tubes. No bragging just good information..

Have you ever heard anyone say, change is good embrace it? And bonus, you got another tool. Plus that way has to save time it's like working with new parts. That is a very good idea. That guy delivers a big thumbs 👍. Stay safe.

This probably falls in the don’t knock it till you try it as well haha. Oh yeah it’s nice to justify having certain tools. My cheap harbor freight heat gun does the trick.

So much easier with a heat gun. Less damages and when every part cools off, all you have to do is 2 inch wheel with 80 grit and grind off the residual glue. you can see the difference in color between the glue and the fiberglass. Fiberglass will be intact, Also, if you have blobs of glue, just heat it up and it scrapes off real easy with a chisel. That's what I did when pulled off all the fiberglass off the birdcage on my 72 coupe. And for the weird marks on the tail panel? I didn't have those markings on in mine. so it is weird there's not much going on in that area.
@MidYearMitch
@MidYearMitch 2 года назад
Yeah I agree that it’s an easy method. I think there are some cases where you don’t want to use heat. Like if there is a big glob of adhesive somewhere I use a hammer and putty knife to break it or knock it off. It’s much quicker that way. But if you want to separate 2 panels this is the way to go. I did forget to mention how to prep the area. I always use 36 grit paper to right the area up for bonding. I’m thinking maybe the muffler blew out on the car and caused the paint to burn off the taillight panel.

Great video! I need to di this for the front lower valence on my 72 C3 im restoring. Looks like you didn't attempt to sand the paint on the panel at the boding strip. You just heated and used the pry tool correct?

Just what I wanted to know as I am trying to split 2 skins on a cobra grp trunk lid- thanks! But wondering - do you know if GM use some sort of glue to bond those panels or were they bonded with standard polyester resin as part of the lay-up?

What material are the binding strips made of?
@MidYearMitch
@MidYearMitch 3 месяца назад
The bonding strips are made out of press molded fiberglass. Just like the rest of the body panels.
