How to Remove echo and noise from a second microphone in Premiere Pro CC - 2020 Tutorial 

Same thing, this came up for me when I started doing podcasts with guests, glad there is an easier way than doing it manually!

​@@Touchtechnologyreview: I'm trying to explain to a videographer I am following that his voice recording system that he uses for voice over, is eliding initial syllables and sometimes whole words. I thought it might be a voice activated microphone, but that would be for reel to reel wouldn't it? The editor is probably recording digitally. What could cause these syllable/word drop-outs? Others listening have said they hadn't noticed it. I am not using speakers, just a hand held Android with the tiny built in speaker that comes in such. Any ideas?

@@rogerscottcathey Perhaps he is using some kind of noise reduction plugin such as a gate or these days some people use AI which can cut off syllables. For future recordings tell hime to provide un filtered audio and you can do the optimisation in post production.

Maybe you can give it a listen and tell me if you notice the same problem I do. Others are saying it's just my listening equipment, an Android.

It is hard to say. As it depends on the microphones used and set up and how loud that second voice was. Basically the idea would be to seperate the track that has the vocal you want to have in the front of the mix and listen to it without any other tracks playing. Now if you can hear that second person in that track and it is quite loud then using these techniques won't really be able to help much.This is more for subtle echo and room noise. SO really the best you can do is to manually cut out bits where the other guy is speaking but if it is literally occurring while the main guy is speaking it will be hard. I have heard of some third party noise removal tools that can do it by frequency but it can be tricky.

Yeah it is really hard to get rid of specific ambient noises especially in a street or cafe etc. The best I ever did with that type of problem was to use Adobe Audition which has an AI noise removal tool that lets you cut out certain frequencies. Worked OK but certainly impacted the clarity of the vocal and sounded a bit fake. So not really sure if there is a great way to do this. Certainly for future recordings it would be about experimenting with more sensitive mics that only pick up the vocal and can block out ambient noise. Can be a matter of trial and error there. Always a challenge to shoot in noisy environments.

@@Touchtechnologyreview Thanks for the great reply! In my case, no doubt it's mostly my fault. I ran two separate lav mics on two recorders carried on person - it was a walk/ride around at a busy beach area. Mic #1 was a decent enough: Sony H1n + somewhat decent and directional lav mic. Mic #2 was unfortunately a Sony IC recorder + cheap mic (very omni-directional). The IC recorder is obviously better left to recording lectures... The gain cannot be manually set and it keeps bringing up the noise floor. It's all I could access at the time for this very run and gun style shoot (a pilot episode for a new RU-vid channel I would like to start). Although the cheap setup was quite "radio" sounding, it actually didn't do a terrible job. The only standout problem being the spill when both mics were close enough. Moving those clips a frame or two in post helps somewhat, but the spill is unavoidable and slightly annoying in a few spots. I'll be getting another H1n and identical mic soon, although.. I do have a H4n and am entertaining the idea of going with wireless lav mics straight into XLR on the H4n.

@@andyrogers5622 Yes I get what you mean. It really is all about the mics in the end. Regarding the XLR into the Zoom you may have to get 3.5 to XLR convertors to run two mics in simultaneously. If the Lav mics need phantom power they often are only 10V so if you put phantom power on on the zoom at 24 or 48 it can blow the mics. So there is a specific 3.5 to XLR adaptor from rode the VXLR+. It converts phantom power to plugin power. So check the mics to see if they need phantom if not just a regular 3.5 to XLR adaptor will be fine.

These are all great questions. I find that in order to speed things up I can do all the audio processing I need in Premiere. However when it comes to certain enhancements sometimes you can get better results using Audition or other audio apps such as Logic. So if I have the time I will often do that. However Premiere really does have all the tools you need to do it right there in the edit. As far as streamlining it further, yes you could use some audio filters in OBS including a gate. This can speed things up. However my only warning there is that if it over does the filter and cuts out too much you never get it back as it is baked into the file you are recording. So really you may be better off leaving the audio optimisation to post production so you have full control over it.... Certainly if you want to stream and upload then you can use the filters in OBS to save time.

You're very welcome. Fair enough...sometimes I do go on a bit.

If you have two vocals recorded onto the one track on the mix then this particular method wont work as well. You can still use the noise gate a little to reduce some of the echo but not to the extent that you can when you have the two seperate audio tracks.

Touch Technology Review What do you suggest you do if this was the case? I recorded gameplay footage with voiceover and apparently I had “two” sources of sound for my voice to pick up, so the end results has my voice echo on itself. However, it was only recorded onto one audio track...

Yes as long as each was recorded on its own separate track. However with 4 mics running depending on how close the subjects were to one another there may be a lot more echo coming in on each track so it may be less effective.

Yeah it does help when the echo and noise is minimal but if there is simply too much spill over then manually removing the audio in each track is the way to go.

LOL, yeah it can sound ok sometime. I have a real issue with it as I like the audio to sound clean and isolate. Can be a matter of preference.

@@Touchtechnologyreview i think it depends on what effects and their equipment. Normally i listen to the video before i post it and as long as background noise is not overpowering my speech I am fine with it. I figure if i am making let play videos the audience is more interested in game play than what I am saying.

@@boyar1978 Yeah for sure as long as there is no excessive background noise a bit of echo is fine and quite often expected. As you say the actual content is king.
