In today’s video, I’m going to show you how to remove galvanization from steel quickly and easily using muriatic acid. I have these tent stakes that I want to use for a project but first I must remove the galvanize coating. So, what is galvanized metal? It’s steel that has a layer of zinc which prevents rust from forming when exposed to the elements. Zinc can be very dangerous to your health if inhaled from its dust or fumes. This means it must be removed before grinding, welding, or other cases where the steel goes under enough heat to vaporize the zinc. That being said, zinc poisoning can easily be avoided.
For my solution, I’m using 3 parts water to one part muriatic acid. Muriatic acid is also known as hydrochloric acid. There’s a few minor differences in the two, being levels of purity and concentration. To remove galvanization, you don’t need to mix it in water to work but I found that this ratio works exceptionally well. As soon as you put the steel in the solution, it will begin to bubble. That’s the zinc dissolving in the acid. Make sure you are wearing skin, eyes, and lung protection when doing this process. The same reasons you wouldn’t want to weld with galvanized steel apply to this process so make sure you do it in a well ventilated area.
After only a few minutes all of the zinc was removed from the tent stakes. When you remove it from the solution, you must neutralize the acid from the steel otherwise it’ll keep eating away. I mixed up a quick solution of washing soda, borax, and water. I kept adding until the solution was fully saturated and wouldn’t dissolve anymore of the powder. There’s still a galvanized section that wasn’t submerged in the acid so I’m going to flip these and repeat the process. After two minutes the bubbles stop flowing so aggressively and the coating looks like it’s completely off. I neutralize the steel again and set aside.
To dispose of this acid solution I’m just going to pour it into my neutralization solution. The acid and bases cancel each other out rather quickly in the form of these bubbles and heat. You really should pour the neutralizing solution into the acid to avoid the acid slashing onto you, but I couldn’t do that with my container. Something to consider if you’re attempting this process. Make sure you read the instructions on the muriatic acid label.
You can immediately tell the difference between the plain steel and zinc coated steel. Since the steel has no coating, but is left with a nice patina, you want to put on a layer of oil to prevent rust from forming. Now it’s ready to be heated and used in an upcoming project.

The reason you want to do it in a well-ventilated area is not the same reason you don't want to weld with it. It doesn't produce toxic zinc fumes in muriatic acid, it produces explosive hydrogen gas (H2). That said, do it away from an ignition source as well.

Excellent!!!!!!! Will try it right away!!!!!!! It's such a pain grinding galvanized parts and super toxic welding them if the galvanized coat is not fully removed.... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I went to several hardware and auto parts stores trying to find plain USS 7/16 flat washers. Took an hour to figure out I wasn't going to find them. Then I thought, 'I'll check out RU-vid'....... In little more than the time it took to watch this video, the galvanized washers (I ALREADY HAD!!) were ready to weld....Thank You....... Being a pack rat, I had battery electrolyte.

Good Video' For all of you going to try this remember "" ADD ACID TO WATER CAUSE YOU KNOW YOU OUGHTA""! Also Remember to put the Cap Back onto your Muriatic Acid Bottle right away! It's corrosive and will start to eat and rust all the metal in any area the fumes come into contact with.

Thank you. I’ve bough second hand walkway mesh covered in gal which I want to weld into a fire pit, which people will use for cooking too. Too difficult to grind/wire brush all the gal and I can’t have any left if people are cooking near it with fire. Now I just need to find two baths big enough and a container to put the neutralised chemical in to dispose of properly. I have safety gear.

Very very helpful. I want to use electrolysis to remove rust from inside a motorcycle gas tank but due to it's odd shape and some additional tubing inside it, it's been tricky to figure out what bits of old metal I can fit in there. Found a landscaping stake at the hardware store but it's galvanised and I wasn't sure if that meant I shouldn't use it (apparently we shouldn't use stainless steel for the sacrificial anode due to the chrome in it or something). So I will use this technique to remove the galvanisation to plain steel first. Thanks again!

You used the correct technique when pouring acid into the neutralizer. Your comment about doing it the other way around is incorrect. Always pour the acid into water or neutralizing agent. Think "aw" (as in awww, what a cute kitty = Acid into Water and WA! (Don't do it!) = Water into Acid. Goofy perhaps, but it's easy to remember.

Think of it this way when you pour acid into water if you do it fast there's a chance for the water to jump up at you. So if you poured water into the acid the acid would be jumping at you. I know this because you can't do it the correct way if your filling a battery with distilled water and I had the acid jump up at my eye! Lucky I had water on hand to rinse it fast so if I ever need to do that again I'm definitely wearing protection! Sometimes you don't learn until you have a bit of an accident lol

Thanks for the video. Simpson ties use electro-galvanization, instead of hot-dip galvanization, or a zinc coating. Do you think this process will work to remove the galvanization from Simpson Strong Ties? I need to repair a floor furnace and screw a small angle to the pilot/thermocouple unit inside the furnace, and want to take precautions regarding the fumes.

This may be a dumb question but whats yhe best way to dispose of the neutralized solution. The acid and washing powder mixture? I'm thinking of just pouring the neutralized solution in cat litter and putting it in trash? Would that be safe?
@SharpWorks
@SharpWorks 2 года назад
Not a dumb question at all. If the acid is fully neutralized, it technically should be safe enough to go down the drain, but your method sounds like it’s even better, especially if it’s a small amount. It’s always good to refer to what your local government or authority requires you dispose of any acidic or basic solutions.

Just make sure you do it outside and don’t breath in the fumes also be careful not to allow the acid to come in contact with your skin and you should be good.

So what strength muriatic/hydrochloric acid do we need for this process? Having googled it, it would seem most people sell it at 36% pure... Is this strong enough to dissolve the zinc coating?
@SharpWorks
@SharpWorks 2 года назад
I’m not exactly sure how strong this particular brand is, but I would think the stronger the solution, the faster it’ll dissolve the zinc. So I don’t think the strength matters too much as long as you give it enough time to dissolve all of the coating and pour enough of the solution to do the job.
@semperidem2577
@semperidem2577 2 года назад
@@SharpWorks Cheers. I guess if you wanted to bring costs down and weren't too worried about time then a weaker solution and a longer period in the solution would do the trick. I've got some chain I'd like to weld and need to remove the coating first.

What's the best way to dispose of the mixed solution once you're done using it?
@SharpWorks
@SharpWorks 2 года назад
First, make sure you fully neutralize the acid with baking soda. Once it’s fully neutralized, you can dilute it with water. In theory it should be safe to wash down the drain. This should work for small quantities. Just double check your local laws if that would be fine with the amount you expect to dispose.

I’m wanting to weld galvanized pipe together and everywhere I read and watch on RU-vid it says “DON’T UNLESS PROPERLY VENTILATED OR GALVANIZATION IS REMOVED”. I’m no expert and have no knowledge on this subject... is this a solution to which this metal becomes weldable with little to no toxic danger?
@SharpWorks
@SharpWorks 3 года назад
Yes, I believe you can weld after you remove the galvanization with this process. Just make sure all of it is off completely before attempting. And make sure to do use this solution outdoors in a well ventilated area as well.
@jamesboswellii
@jamesboswellii 4 года назад
Why dilute the acid??
@SharpWorks
@SharpWorks 4 года назад
Sometimes the acid can be too strong and will eat holes in the metal, plus it helps cut down on how much acid is used in exchange for time.

Nice process. You should correct your description and add a note on the video to add acid to water, never the other way around. You actually did it correctly. (Read the label) If you thought that was too reactive, you could add your acid solution to a larger volume of plain water, and then add that to the neutralizing solution.

i prepared some muriatic acid to degalvanize some bolts and nuts, took 5 minutes then i looked at the solution and thought heh this could work a few more times, lets not throw it yet, and left the bottle with a aluminium sheet on top, few days later, i look at the aluminium its all cracked, eaten. time to use vinegar has come. this thing is too scary. it will take 100x more time to remove the zinc but also 100 times more chances to survive this process.
@AlessioSangalli
@AlessioSangalli 3 года назад
So you let a bunch of hydrochloric acid open to vent with aluminum above it and you complain it's all cracked up? It was just enough to put a cap on the bottle,
