I'll be at work when you air this -- but the deal absolutely no RU-vid blogger is talking about is the Makita brushless 18 volt 1/2" impact wrench kit at $149 -- Includes 2AH battery. It was a pain in the neck! My neck and back were sore the next day, as were my fingers, because of using muscles I never knew I had, and trying to loosen screws way up high under the cabinet, that would only be done 1/4 turn at a time with my tiny ratchet and socket bits. Thank God I had my Dewalt 173 piece tool set with me, that kit saved the day.

Oh thank you so much for making this video. I have nearly the exact same project. Every countertop company would rather I just have them dispose the old countertop and then have the new cabinets and a new countertop put in. Well, my granite countertop is really nice and it's such a waste of material and labor to put in a new one. I now have the confidence to do this myself without having to pay for a new countertop which is their agenda.

Yes being an engineer I have the confidence to pull off something like this and I am never afraid of performing microsurgery like this to extract something out gently. The problem with all of these contractors is they're used to just coming in with sledgehammers and bashing things up it's a lot quicker for them they won't spend the five hours that it took me to do this

Really nice work here. Question, could this work extend to that of replacing all cabinets under the granite counter? We just purchased a condo (closing in about two weeks) and the owner put a new granite countertop over old, ugly cabinets (and called the kitchen "completely renovated").
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 года назад
Yes you could do that with additional bracing added, just like what I had under the sink. I thin a 2 x 4 wedged into place under the counter every 24" would support the granite.

I can’t wait for the granite countertop trend goes away, if you ever want to paint your cabinets a different color, or change your flooring you’re limited with color because of all the crazy colors in the granite.

I don't know why I missed it, there were 2 scenes there which I filmed for this but never used them. It was easy though, just put bead of silicone around top of new cabinet and slide it right under granite counter, and shim up off floor until the top of the cabinet touches the granite counter.

I enjoyed the video and learned a lot. I’m just curious - was there any consideration of refinishing the existing cabinet? Especially given the potential risks to the granite? It appeared in the video that the only thing damaged was the finish, not the plywood base or front piece.

This was at my friend’s house and I think it was only a $200 for him to buy replacement base unit so he just figured he didn't wanna refinish it. He said it was better to just put the same exact model number back in

Jeff thank you for the helpful video, I am keeping the cabinet .. just want to get the sink out from under the granite .. to put a new drop in sink in place ? ... any idea on how I can do that ?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 года назад
Kim: drop sink? If it was installed in granite I would expect that the sink was in undermounted sink and so you would sink from above you would likely be having one re mounted from below. So double check that and make sure you are doing the correct thing here. Also when you buy a new sink I would go for one that's thick like 16 to 18 mil thick. Instead of the standard steel that they give you in most of the stores when you buy them there 'cause they tend to be too flexible

Enjoyed your video. Nice job. That outlet for the garbage disposal is tied to a switch, right? So wouldn't that cause a problem trying to use same outlet for dishwasher?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 года назад
No it would not cause a problem because what you have to do is snipped the tabs on the right side of the outlet that connects the 2 individual receptacles together. Once you do that they now operate separately in most houses your garbage disposal would go into one recepticle in the dishwasher as its own 20 amp circuit as well going into that other receptacle

Any thoughts on if you need to remove a cabinet at the end of an L shaped granite counter top in terms of bracing it so it doesn't snap off under its own weight?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 года назад
The same process should apply what I would do is when you get the cabinet near the edge of the counter have a four by four or a 2 by 4 post ready to stick in there and make sure that it is snug fit from the floor to the bottom of the granite counter. Then as you slide the cabinet out you can put one or two more in there.

i cant stress these tools enough for siliconing: Cramer Fuji. 2 years ago we went over to Germany to understand the science behind so many failed seals in silicone; along with why applying silicone incorrectly (especially in damp areas: sink/shower/bathroom) - attracts mold/mildew) conclusive #1 reason is not creating the correct bond with a tool and not introducing bacteria or other chemicals in the curing process of silicone: no fingers, no soapy water, no air bubbles, no introducing mineral spirits to the curing silicone. Totally different then latex or Polyurethane caulk. Siliconing is the term used in Europe for all sealant bonding vs USA says "caulking" although one may use silicone in the caulking process. Silicone is a sealant NOT a bonding adhesive.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
That is correct I guess you haven't seen my other videos from last year several of them where we mentioned using the Cramer fugi kit, unfortunately can't use it on this particular spot because of the shape of the beviled edge between these stainless steel sink and the granite countertop

@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 года назад
I have not broken the granite yet, doing this about 5 time so far. I am very carefully, move things slowly, no surprises, and I shore up the granite as best I can, and you saw once the cabinet was out, the 2x4 went up immediately to shore up that granite overhang.

The reason why they cut that is because it's too heavy for two installers to carry it. Also there's a good chance the countertop will break if not cut.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 года назад
I have seen cases where they made the countertop without a seam. My same granite guys that I use also on a similar counter like this put a seam in the middle of the sink also because when both right and left side is up against a wall, they cannot easily set the counter. Now if the other side is open and not against the wall, they can lay it easily without cracking.
