We've previously demonstrated how to apply liquid metal, but have received increasingly frequent requests for how to remove liquid metal. This video walks through the basics of that. We also revisit the topic of plating copper as a result of ion migration between the gallium and copper, resulting in permanent "stains" on the IHS of a CPU.

This is pretty basic stuff (and we filmed it about a month ago), but maybe helpful to those who are concerned about 'stains' on the IHS. Watch our liquid metal corrosion test video for more details: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cQaqUyKVIEE.html

@@KEITHTB12345 I can do a vid on insulation. I run phase for daily (FX keeps below 0c under load on the core at 1.7 Vcore, block temps peak at -25c at the hottest at 500w load). Do you want a guide for GPUs or CPUs? I need to kill a Titan Xp, so I can do that one, or I already have the CPU insulated, and I'll just do a teardown since I need to snatch its cooler for the Titan (so I can make both videos no problem, but it takes a while to edit, so let me know which one you want first. If you do want me to make that video, sub to "Legit_Overclocking" to the link below and comment on one of the videos (like the FX Cinebench) and just ask for it. Also feel free to mention it several times, I sometimes forget... ru-vid.com/show-UCZp2Om_w_o0ry_FQhAUp-CA I do work a ton of hours, so it may be next weekend before I can film, and then the weekend after that for publishing (I have to drive over to McDonnalds for faster Wifi for uploads...).

Best way is to get a credit card and make sure you smoosh it right in there in one swift motion. That way you have the best chance of shorting everything out and then having to go back to the store to buy a new everything. I mean by the time you get this stuff home it's already obsolete anyway so there's going to be some new hotness out when you go back. :) win win... except for your wallet, your wallet is on fire.

If you want to get the surface really clean and smooth, I found a secret weapon: Weiman Glass Cook Top Cleaner and Polish. This stuff is used to finely polish glass top stoves and it works well on IHSes and cooler surfaces. I was actually looking around for some metal polish and didn't have any handy when I realized I had some of the Weiman stuff so I tried it and it worked very well, much better than just alcohol alone. You'll still have some of the staining unless you REALLY go at it for a long time, but I found that it got the vast majority of the job done in a fraction of the time. It has the added benefit of polishing the surface smooth.

Hey Steve! Just wanted to let you know there is a method to dispense liquid metal compound from the applicator / syringe without the danger of it squirting everywhere. All you have to do is place your finger or thumb of your other hand between the collar of the syringe and the plunger, as you press down on the plunger it squeezes the thumb of your other hand as it goes down and this stops the plunger shooting into the barrel and the gallium shooting out. You can also put a collar around the plunger made of rubber tube or electrical wire insulation or paper tower, I even used cotton wool wrapped around the plunger stem once because it compresses at a steady rate. All the best to all of you guys at gamers nexus, from StAsh420UK.

To remove the remaining "black staining" I would suggest using "silvo" . its designed to bring impurities up and out. As a detailer by trade i see that color in metals all the time and a couple applications of silvo should bring back to a chemically neutral state. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

just a tip here What could be easier? Simply palm of your hand and let the warmth of your body heat do the work! The melting point of gallium is 29.76 C (85.57 F), so it will readily melt in your hand or in a very warm room. Expect this to take around 3-5 minutes for a coin-sized piece of metal. or You can supercool liquid metal and then collecting it with a vacuum cleaner or gentle scraping

Mr. Nexus, TLDR: Steve, try Fitz Polish to remove old liquid metal on nickel-plated copper (maybe copper too) Old, caked-on liquid metal comes off of Nickel-plated copper pretty well using "Fitz Polish." You might already know of Fitz Polish If you've ever gotten a delidding kit from Rockitcool, since they include it for cleaning off the die once all the solder is off. Acetone (which works well on liquid metal that's not all dusty looking & old), isopropyl alcohol, rubbing compound (ya, for a car--derp), & even scraping it off with a razor blade did not work well for me. Well, the razor blade removes the LM for the most part but scratches up whatever you were trying to get LM off of in the process. It also makes a big mess of dark gray dust. Anyway, I can only vouch that it works on nickel-plated copper--I haven't tried it on copper. It might be worth your time to check it out if you ever wanna revisit this.

It's times like this that remind me that the nerds at GN don't work much with tools. Lol If I had a part that was separate or safely segregated, I would blow off all the liquid metal with compressed air. The canned stuff won't cut it here, get a compressor. And if I really was upset about corrosion on my IHS, I'd take my Dremmel to it with a wire brush tip or a polishing tip. Although I wouldn't waste my time since nobody is going to see it.

For the IHS lids at least, you might try an ultrasonic cleaning unit.

it can't work since gallium made an alloy with copper and ultrasonic cleaning can damage metal plating.

@@PainterVierax Not talking about the gallium alloy which of course I already understood, but rather removing surface contaminant. Having cleaned plated parts many times this way, don't know what damage you're talking about.

plating can be removed with ultrasonic cleaning, even manuals for small (quite ineffective) consumer devices warns about that for jewelery cleaning. At work, we have worn chrome plated pieces with that method.

10:45 if that doesn't work take it outside, spray a bunch of alcohol on it and blast with compressed air

The liquid metal scratched the surface of my chip. Is no longer mirror smooth. What should I do?

Is it possible to damage or completely destroy a cpu by scratching it or pressing too hard directly on the die? What kind of precautions do you take? I feel like if I use any kind of paper towel or something like that will scratch or damage the cpu. If GN or someone else responds, thanks a lot.

The simple answer is yes, however it takes more force than you would expect. At that point its less scratching, more gouging - not something you are at heavy risk of if you apply some common sense limits.

don't worry about scratching the die, it's quite hard to scratch, and if you are pushing hard enough to crack it you already snapped the motherboard in half :D
