Thank you so much!! I have been visiting a million pages and I could not solve the black square problem. Just an explanation is enough to understand it was not even a problem. Much appreciate it.
If u have black squares change -50 to -51 or -52. Be sure to restart windows explorer in task manager each time you change the value to see what kind of icon you get. I had a hand and garbage can until i changed it to -50 something.
After several restart, finally got it, thanks. note, when renaming the file be sure to put in the (s) as in icons rather (icon) because it makes a different.
Any idea on why this works but when I restart my computer it'll have black squares? I changed my app size and it's still there and I've switched between 50, 51, and 52
Thanks for making this video tutorial it's really very helpful . For me it was very complicated before i watch this video. Be helpful to people like us who they are not very aware about little things of computer.
I removed the arrows with the above method about a year ago, and a few days ago, after a Windows update, all my Icons was suddenly see-through, task manager had disappeared and when I clicked on afile to get to properties there was just nothing..So someone mentioned that I should look as this arrow string and when I looked into the Registry only 29 was there....the rest of the string had disappeared!! I put the string back...and voila...all the above problems was gone..boy was I glad. This morning when I restarted the PC....sad to see that the icons was covered in black again. I changed to -52, restarted explorer and the icons on the desktop was good again,,,,intil I restarted the pc and back to black icons.
I am in windows 11, after restart, my icon change into big black box, change "29" string value into nothing or empty, seem to fix the problem even after restart, anyway, thank you so much for the tutorial
BLACK BOX SOLVED.... Delete that '29' string > add that '29' string again but leave that command %stuff%whatever EMPTY > Reboot (fk'n stupid winshit) alternate... in '29' command line... put C:/(or where that new .ico is and dont move it ever)/blank.ico blank.ico obviously been a blank transparent .ico (find one or make one... GreenFish icon editor)

%windir%\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,-50 [if black square shows up try this] %windir%\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,-51 %windir%\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,-52
