How to remove window deflectors on a vehicle. As you’ve seen in the previous weeks, I installed new window deflectors on this truck. The old deflectors were faded, broken, and one is missing. #ToyotaTacoma #detailing #howto

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-heat gun
-eraser wheel
-drill
-clay bar
-polishing compound
-microfiber cloth
Procedure:
To remove the deflectors, it would be best to wash the vehicle to remove any contaminants which can damage the paint.
Using a heat gun would be best, a hairdryer can possibly work for this too. Heat along the edge of where the adhesive is.
Continue to pull off the deflector and heat the surface as needed. The heat will soften up that adhesive so it’s easier to remove. The surface shouldn’t be excessively hot, it should still be comfortable to touch with your hand. This is important as it makes the removal easier and reduces the chance of pealing paint off your vehicle. Fishing line or dental floss can also be used to help cut the adhesive too.
You may find the deflector breaks such as what happened to me. Just watch for flying plastic and wear safety glass would certainly be an excellent idea too.
Moving onto the rear window using the same procedure. Heat the adhesive strip on the deflector. I’m guessing these deflectors have been on the truck for close to 10 years.
And then pull off the deflector.
You may or may not have the double-faced foam adhesive left. For the most part, you can heat this up and then roll it off with your finger.
If the remaining adhesive is left, a wax and grease remover along with a soft cloth can be used. Careful around any rubber or bare plastic trim as solvents can dry them out.
I am finding some of the glue is too hard to remove either by hand or a solvent, so another method is using an eraser wheel. I have used to eraser wheel to remove decals on a previous video, when used correctly it won’t damage the paint.
You may need to finish up again using a wax and grease remover.
Clean away any of the material left behind from the eraser wheel as well.
Another method to help remove the leftover adhesive is using a clay bar. The clay bar won’t damage the paint, however, it can remove any contaminants left on the paint’s surface such as the dried glue. Keep the paint well lubricated, along with the clay bar, apply light to medium pressure allowing the clay bar to glide across the surface.
Considering those deflectors were there for a longer period, there will most likely be ghosting. This can be done by hand or using a machine polisher. A similar method like removing oxidation from, use a light polishing compound to polish the paint, removing any light scratching and oxidation.
If you are planning on installing new deflectors, the surface will need to be cleaned with a wax and grease remover to clean away any contaminants which may cause adhesive issues. If not, now that the paint is bare, it will need a protectant of some type such as a sealant or wax. And as you can see, it’s as if the deflectors were never there.

I just removed all four of my AVS window vents. All I used was Mineral Spirits, a round paint brush and a rag to catch the runs. It took about 30 minutes total. The 3M 2-sided tape is near perfect and they are entirely reusable. Granted they were only installed for about two weeks, not years.

What temperature do you recommend using with the heat gun?

Fishing line works really good, however dental floss breaks very often

That is true, however when one is missing or broken, you can't get a replacement. You can only purchase as a set unfortunately.
