thanks for the vid! i was worried it was gonna be pretty complicated, i watched this and had no problems.......96 intruder vs800....soon to be a bobber
I hate misplacing my kotter pins. just the other day I spent 2 minutes looking for my kotter pin. finally I found it. I said "Welcome Back, Kotter Pin."
Pretty much all of the rear brake linkage is made to be safely adjusted. You can adjust at the nut at the rear end of your linkage rod, or you can pop off the linkage from the splined output shaft, rotate it a couple of teeth, and pop it back on, same as you would the brake lever. Be sure to spin the wheel by hand after to make sure the brakes arent too tight. Check out my video on rear brake drum adjustment for more info
I have a yamaha custom midnight that I did work to, I did rebuilt carb, hypercharger, tune up, grips pegs mirrors, etc, but when I had the bars tank and seat off, and no carb, it just looked like I was building it from ground up, but its such a satisfaction and a high to be able to put it back together like nothing. Its like surgery, lol
I have a boulevard c50, I have drive shaft problems, a friend of mine took the rear wheel off and he said it was much more complicated so that he would need to strip down the bike to get to that part because it is connected to everything and he dont have the tools to do such a job or the time. He is saying it is the U-Joints that is the problem. any advice?
Thanks for the tips. Let me ask you this though. My rear drum is out of limits. After I adjust my pedal and the stop, my next option for setting is the input link. Can I rotate that back to make up for the lost distance in the drum? How unsafe is this? I'm having trouble finding a replacement except for a $500 new one. That hurts.
Hey Max, I just replaced my rear tire!!! It took me 4hrs but it's on. But now when I put it in gear to roll away, it doesn't move. Any thoughts on what could be happening? Thx for any help.
Got my wheel and final drive off together but for the life of me I cant pull it off the wheel, any tips? I tried holding the gear that connects to the driveshaft and wiggling it but to no avail. Any help is much appreciated.
Unless you're in neutral, that's normal for a motorcycle. It's called engine braking. ..it does feel like a sudden halt, takes some getting used to. ...Depends on what gear you're in. "Blip" your throttle (roll to match engine speed) when you're using downshifting to engine brake suddenly. some clutch play is involved. Then you'll be pro
Hell yeah, I've got mine pretty much completely apart except for the front rotor and the drive gear on the back wheel. once those are off I can prep for paint. Think I might take em off tonight then start in on prep my next day off.
How far should a bike roll when u let off the gas when your going slow coming up to a light? Cause my XS11 really bogs down when i release the throttle. Its like it fights to roll. Is that normal for heavy motorcycles or should it have a nice coast to it kinda like a bicycle when i let off?
How did your drive shaft not fall out? I have a 02 Suzuki intruder 1500 LC . When I pulled the three bolts loose on the final drive the drive shaft fell out up by the front yoke like never got it back in. If you're just pulling the tire you can leave the final drive hooked up.. correct?
Thaaaank yooouuuu Max! You are the Man! Wish there was 2 thumbs up buttons for this one. Quick question, I'm still window shopping & dreaming of my next bike & I've decided to stay away from the sport bikes & I think I found my fantasy bike but wanted to get your thoughts on the pros & cons of a belt drive vs chain & shaft. The bike I had in mind is the all new fuel injected 1300cc Yamaha Stryker.
@mksalgado I hear ya man, I ride that high every day. Take off the tank and seat and it doesnt even look like a motorcycle anymore, its cool when friends come over you can say 'oh yeah, thats the motorcycle I'm restoring.' Bikes are so cool.
a yamaha xj650, I literally just got it off and hoped on here to tell ya. Had to give it a couple taps on each side from the back. to get it to free from the gear even after I still had to stand on my tire and pull hard to get it off the wheel.
@mksalgado Me too dude, even on days when everything goes wrong and I fail to fix anything, its still a great way to spend the day and I don't feel like any time is wasted.
@mrmaxstorey ya im gonna jack it up and spin the tires like u told me to do to find that clatter. i mean when i roll into a red light sometimes i end up coming to a stop before the light with cars on ridin my butt and gotta throw my feet down and gas it again to get up to the light and worry about them rear endin me lol heard bearings aint so easy to find for this bike but just looked on ebay and they seem plentiful looking forward to your changing beerings vid so i dont do it wrong ;)
hey fella, cheers for this. would you be up for doing a step by step tuts on rebuilding the suzuki gs 650gt? i find videos like this is far easier to understand than books
when you take your cylinder head off,if its an overhead cam, one trick is to put a wire thru the timing chain, so you dont drop the chain down into the crank case.
Hey Max, while doing this I thought about switching out the wheel for another with rims so I wouldn't have to deal with cleaning spokes again. Problem is if there is a compatible wheel for the Madura from another bike that was made around the same time. I have heard a certain 80's GS series has the appropriate wheels but I don't want to risk buying a set to end up with them fitting. Could you perhaps help me in identifying which GS front and rear wheels could fit onto my '85 Madura 700?
@skinz1234 I have a XS1100 too, and yeah it is a bitch to roll, especially if I am trying to push it around the driveway. It is my understanding that it should be easier than that, and I am going to go at it this weekend. Scrub the rust off the caliper, pads and rotor, make sure it is filled with rear diff fluid, make sure the tires are pumped up, etc. My GV1200 will roll just as easy as you please, and I believe they are about the same weight.
Nice videos as usual. I have a 1982 Yamaha maxim 750. 13000 miles love the bike. Problem..it loves to expel diff fluid and I'm not sure why. Tried different weights. Any ideas? Ty
Hey Max, when I pulled the wheel off, the drive shaft pulled out of the sleeve along with it. of course the universal prevents it from sliding completely out of the sleeve. but my issue is putting the shaft back into the primary. I get it in to the linkage but it wont go in far enough so then the bolts wont go back into the sleeve frame. I cant see why the shaft doesn't go back in far enough, wish i hadn't remove that sleeve to begin with but it seemed this didn't happen to you when you pulled the wheel off Your bike any Idea what I need to do?
Hi Glenn, unfortunately that never happened to me so I dont have any experience solving this issue. I know for sure from reassembling boat drive shafts that you sure dont want to force it in there by tightening down the bolts. Maybe if you can remove the spark plugs, and spin the motor a little by hand while gently applying pressure to the drive shaft, it will click into place. This might be a better question for Greg, let me know when you solve the problem
@@mrmaxstorey thanks for the suggestion. What I ended up doing was removing the primary cover release the shaft sleeve boot clamps, pushed the boot back to view the primary end of the shaft. Then fabricated a thin but sturdy metal rod to slide under the shaft to guide it into the primary drive. It slid right in. It's the universal that makes that front end so floppy. I won't say it was easy but after that, I got the wheel back on and buttoned it all back up. Took her for a short spin and all is back to normal. Can't guarantee that won't happen again because the front and back sides aren't held by any type of set screw. All said and done, it cost me 4 hours of labor and 60.00 for the new tube and wheel balance.
I’ve tried to use a piece of wood with a hammer, and someone pulling in the other side... no luck. I’ve used blaster lubricants and it seems that the spacer on the brake side is really hard to turn. I’ve put a little heat on it still no luck. I’m really frustrated, it’s got to come out!!
Well thats definitely unusual. Often there is a little valve at the top of the diff, perhaps yours is stuck open so it squirts out when its not supposed to
I have a 1983 Honda cb650, and I can’t get the axle out to put a new tire on the back, I’ve unhooked everything the manual says. The axel won’t budge. Now mind you it’s a 35 year old bike, with the original tire. Anyone got any ideas?😱
@Michiganborn1969 Haha no prob dude sorry it took me a while to get to it. That stryker looks awesome, obviously ive never touched one but Im sure its a classy ride. Kinda reminds me of the Triumph Rocket 3, which is my dream bike. As far as pros and cons of the drive system, my last video goes into that a little. Send me a message and we can talk about it in detail if you want.
8/09/14...MC mechanics ...I'm in my Cave trying to remove the rear axle nut on my Honda Shadow. I done put 24" of cheat on it and it won't break...What do I do next? It's 90 deg F and I'm sweatin' . If I rosebud heat it I'm sure I'm gonna screw something up.
Well, oil will be the first step. Then make sure the rear brake isnt binding up. Finally if that doesnt get it rolling, you'll have to disassemble everything and make sure you have it all put together properly
Nahh, you didn't take long at all putting this video together. Was about a week like you said. Only main difference between the shaftie you have in this video & my Maxim is that my rear brake is a drum & shoe setup instead of a disk brake but I don't think it be too hard to figure out since I do the brakes & oil jobs on all our vehicles.
