Please follow his advice and use all safety protection gear. I used to work in the trades and this machine is the loudest piece of equipment that I have used. I've even used jackhammers but because of the wide and thin metal tip this tool seems to produce an incredibly irritating frequency. Ear plugs are so cheap and your hearing loss is forever. ;^) As well, I would suggest that you use eye protection as those little shards can jump straight up into your eyes in a millisecond. Good luck!

Thanks for your comment Barry. I agree it is quite loud but not bad with hearing protection.

Is there a smaller tool to remove the grout having a similar effect as the tool you used? I'll be researching in case you don't get back by the time I get to that point. Thanks again.

Very interesting, Dave. What if I am trying to get the mastic (black, probably applied sometime in the early 1960s) on top of the original floor tiles of my home (1909) off? Can I use the electrical scraper to do this or might I damage the tiles? Some of the mastic is brittle and comes off easily and some is very hard to chip off. If the above won't work in my case what would you suggest? Thanks and best wishes from Paul.

Very interesting, thanks! I'm trying to remove a thick layer of solid floor wax from an industrial floor. I might try this tool. The wax is a build up of 20+ years and is like a large membrane sheet over the concrete floor. Have tried a diamabrush which shifted it eventually, but was very slow. If tapped with a hammer the wax shatters in small pieces but I need something that will do a large area quickly without damaging the concrete underneath, so scabblers etc are out. Your video is food for thought! Thanks again!!

@terrys3402
@terrys3402 4 года назад
Dust is a huge problem when removing thinset. To keep the dust down, spray the floor with water using a little yard sprayer. You can spray a 4’ x 5’ area and then scrape with blade and rotary hammer. You don’t need a ton of water. If you sweep up while the debris is still a little moist it works well. Good luck.

Where did you you rent the electric floor scraper. I contacted my local Home Depot and the indicated that device was for removing glue. They suggested another device which was essentially a rotary sander which will certainly generate lots of dust in the space

Hi thanks for this video. We have concrete slab we are removing the thinset from but are trying to save the orignally stained slab from getting gouged. We plan on using the original slab as our normal flooring. We had someone pull up our other tile but he did it all by hand and the floors looked great. Will we get the same effect using this electric scraper?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 10 лет назад
Hi Ann, in my experience, the electric scraper has not gouged the floor. But there is always a possibility that it could happen. If you want a guarantee, then doing it by hand would be the safest. There are other tools, but then again, there's no guarantee.

Hi David. I was going to use this method for my tile removal, but noticed you don't recommend this for tile on wood flooring. My tile is installed over cement board (not hardi board, but cement board with mesh). Do you think this tool would work for that or do you have any recommendations? Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the helpful video. I am removing my ceramic tile to lay down laminate flooring with an underlayment. Do you feel it would be necessary to use the scraper to get the tile mastic off or could I just lay the underlayment right over top?

Not sure. but by using the scraper you will get everything off the floor which will give you a very clean surface.

Great video. What are my options if the thinset is on plywood?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 10 лет назад
The floor that I am working on as you probably know, is a solid slab foundation. The machine I am using in the video, if used on plywood it might gouge it to some degree. I have never used it on plywood but you can always try it. I'd suggest not pushing hard on the scraper which you don't need to do anyway. If you are installing new tile, then the plywood should be fine because any gouges in it would be filled with the new thinset when you lay the new tile.
@stephencannon3140

Do they make a smaller version for individual tile repair instead of the whole floor. I am removing about three non consecutive rows of tiles but don’t want to agitate the adjacent rows of tiles. Main reason is they don’t make the pattern anymore and damage to adjacent rows or tiles will require replacement of entire floor...approximately 600 tiles.

nice video. you don't recommend this for wood? any suggestions for very old glued laminate with the black mastic or more modern stick down tiles over 1) fir flooring, 2) oak flooring, 3) and 1930s tiles I want to save?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 лет назад
+pwreconomist1 I'm sorry I cannot really advise you on this one. I don't have experience with a house that old nor fir flooring. Not sure what the outcome would be. You could try it manually with a hand chisel and see how it works out. Then if it does, can try the electric scraper at an angle like I wrote for Colby Manscill. But there's always a chance of damaging the wood subfloor. Good luck with your project.

Hi - some help needed: I found some sort of wire / net...what do I do? also, do I need to level the floor before placing new tile? This is a kitchen project, thanks!
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 7 лет назад
+lromeroyt The wire net doesn't come up when removing the mastic or thinset with the scraper? It's hard to answer without seeing your flooring but if the new thinset covers the wire then it should be okay. Also you don't need to level the floor after scraping...the new thinset will level it out if it's not too lumpy. But try to remove almost all the thinset/mastic before proceeding.

great video! Any advice on how to remove most of the thinset WITHOUT damaging the existing electric heat mat that is currently set into the thinset? Can I just re-tile over that by adding new thinset over that part when I set the new tiles? Thanks!!
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 лет назад
Wow, the electric heat mat could pose a problem. I wouldn't recommend re-tiling over the old mastic because it would not come out with an even surface. If you can smooth down an area of the old thinset without removing or damaging the heat mat, then you can give that a try. After that, I would suggest trying just a few tiles to see how it comes out. It will be a lot of work though to smooth the thinset (without damaging the electric heat mat) if it's a large area. Good luck and it would be great if you would reply here with a comment of the results of that project. :-)
@andrewdemos6745
@andrewdemos6745 9 лет назад
Pop the tiles off carefully and pour self levelling cement over the existing heat mat. It will bring the height of your tile up a bit so you'll have to adjust your transitions and toilet height accordingly.

Dave, I removed all the tiles and almost all the thinset. However there is still some thinset on the floor. My question is can I just lay the tile over the small amount of thinset still remaining? And will this effect the leveling of the tiles??? Thanks
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 10 лет назад
Dennis, yes you can if the floor is not bumpy...needs to be fairly smooth. It won't affect leveling if it's not chunky bumpy because you're going to add more thinset when adding the tiles.

Hi ...I didn't rent the machine for my fireplace because of the small area, but I removed the tiles normally. For you, it will be harder with two layers of tiles...which is unfortunate because that's not supposed to be done. I used a large sized chizel and hammer to remove the thinset. Hope that helps.

I'm attempting to remove thinset from hardibacker board, and when I went to rent an 11 lb Makita rotary hammer with chisel set I was told that would be way too much power and would dig right through the hardibacker board. So... I'm painstakingly scraping it off with a floor scraper. Pulling up the tiles there are some areas that are dug into the hardibacker a little bit. Should I fill those with some sort of cement repair mud?

I'm assuming that's OSB underneath. So the scraper gets the vast majority off but I was wondering if getting down to the bare wood is a must? I assume it can't be powdery at all. Like if I put my hand down on the floor I shouldn't see any powder on it.

i'm doing tiles basically my first time but i'm a fast learner.. my sister paid a professional or so they say.. but as you walk on the tile it sounds like it's tapping the floor feels loose in certain area so I pull the loose ones up and its more then what I thought.. at first it seems like it was eight that was loose now it's triple that and still more loose.. was it because of the mixture or did the mud didn't stick to the concrete floor.... I don't want to make the same mistake they did so i'm researching better ways on fixing it...
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 лет назад
garrell Lewis He either didn't use the correct adhesive or if it was a mix he didn't mix it correctly. Also, the floor (concrete) needs to be somewhat clean. Then there is the time factor that it needs to dry before being walked on. A good amount of adhesive is used to cover the whole tile so it can "sit" into it.

Sorry for the delay...I was on vacation last week. After you've completed scraping, you mop up the floor to get the dust off. That's all. It does not need to be real smooth because you're going to put tile mastic or thinset before laying the new tile, therefore the thinset makes a smooth setting for the tiles. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Good call on the ear defenders, without ear protection you'd do some serious damage! Same for eye & particle mask protection; and heavy duty gloves!! Also, use a decent rcd circuit breaker incase things get oveloaded as you'll be working the tool real hard. Good luck

If I've never used this equipment before do I risk breaking up the cement? I'm afraid I'll ruin the floor.

would you need to worry about accidentally cracking the concrete floor underneath with that machine?

There are different brands, and you can rent them from large hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe's.

Seems like that tool would have been a better choice for removing tile in the first place. What do you think?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 лет назад
fairbornCCF Are you referring to the electric scraper?
@fairbornCCF
@fairbornCCF 9 лет назад
Be Your Own Handyman @ Home The electric chipper is better than the hand chisel used in your video about removing ceramic floor tile.
@fairbornCCF
@fairbornCCF 9 лет назад
fairbornCCF With a thinner chisel.
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 лет назад
fairbornCCF I meant to say I prefer the hand chisel to remove the actual tiles as it does a better job removing large pieces rather than many, many small ones.
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome

fairbornCCF Maybe for you, but not for me. But no big deal, everyone has their own preferences.

could you also use it to remove the bathroom wall tiles?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 7 лет назад
+Zazie Farmer Yes but keep in mind there won't be a cement flooring underneath it but instead either drywall or another material that usually needs to be repaired after removing the tile.

No, typically there isn't a problem with the concrete.

Yes, it took some recollectiion though! It was 162 square feet and about 8 hours to setup, remove the tile and cleanup, and another 8 hours to remove the thinset and cleanup. Hope this helps!

As a person who knows nothing about this, can you put down linoleum directly over the thinset?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome

Help! After my son put down the hardieboard he put thinset real thick between the seams before he put the tape down. (I don't mean to sound like and old bat but I asked him to watch the videos -- I did). He had to go back home. I have to finish it and don't know what to do. I can't afford to rent that thing you have. Is there anyway I can do it with a hammer and chisels or what ever. I have a charge at the hardware store I could put those on. Wish they had that thing your using to rent. Oh! and were only put down 1/8 inch vinyl -- Imagine ...

@kkp4297
@kkp4297 9 лет назад
Thomas Brockman no don't do that. You'll just smear the adhesive and seal the concrete, preventing bonding of any tile you'll install later. The cutback adhesive is best removed with water and wire brush attachment on a drill or rotary sander. The water is so you don't get asbestos dust.

I would consult with a wood floor specialist so you do not damage the wood.
