Removing and installing the transmission and replacing a heavily worn clutch and flywheel on a newer Subaru. A lot of rust for our area on such a low mileage vehicle made this job more challenging than usual. Like most of my videos, I skip filming the installation of most of the job because it's just the reverse of removing it. Thanks for watching!

Always blows my mind how much work it is to replace a "wear and tear portion" of a manual transmission. ICE automobile engineering is both incredible and antiquated all at the same time.

Definitely old school compared to wizz bang tech coming out of electric cars. To be fair, these clutches should last way longer than this one did.

I had nearly the exact same scenario. Bought my 2018 Subaru WRX Limited used with 44K on it. All during my test driving for about two days it was fine. No clutch slipping until about maybe 4500 RPMs if then. Bought it from a used car lot on a Friday and Monday morning I had it at the dealership. The reason was because of a chirping noise in the engine compartment, which was later determined to be the throwout bearing. When I did the complete thorough check that I did on this vehicle before buying,I noticed that the throwout bearing had been replaced at 31K and 34K. I just assumed that the previous owner was driving around with his foot on the clutch. And here I bought it at 44k, and had the same thing done. The dealership gave me “SUBARU goodwill“ and while they were in there, replaced the flywheel, friction plate, pressure plate, pilot, bearing and release bearing. I’ve had it back for a month, and now the chirping is back. No clutch slipping, just the chirping. Any ideas? And thanks for the great video. Keep up the good work!

Look up wrx clutch fork squeak, specifically the one by dom aleandri. Its probably that. My squeak went away from just applying new grease.

My car is 2017 wrx. A lot of tasteful mods, fmic,e85, intake, exhaust and tune. 98k miles and shes starting to slip in 3rd gear. Have access to a shop and this video makes me feel much more confident about replacing. Thanks!

Best video I've seen so far on RU-vid. I like your approach for removing everything. Those Subaru control arms/ball joints don't seem to separate sometimes without damaging and replacing them. I've ran into that problem before. I may do a clutch job on a similar one like this on my driveway. Keep up the excellent work!

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes I wonder if these videos are too slow paced so I appreciate that. I have sped things up slightly in newer videos but sometimes little tricks and details get missed when I do that.

Hi im about to change the clutch out on my 2017, wondering if you have a list of all of the parts you replaced when doing this job, axle nuts, trans drail, etc. I'm not a mechanic so i dont trust myself to not miss anything.Thanks

This video is exactly what I'm dealing with on my 2017 Subaru WRX! My car starting slipping badly at 3rd gear and would assume I'm in different gears even though I'm in 3rd gear or above! I only got 46k miles on it! Though I brought it at 41k miles... Maybe it was the previous driver but I still blame myself because it seemed fine driving at 5k miles! I ask you though.... What advice could you give us as far as making the clutch last as long as possible!? Thank you for this video btw! Liked & Subbed!

So I actually use Mitchel on demand at work but if you search eBay, you can sometimes come across these factory service manuals for pretty cheap. Worth every penny if you own the car and plan on doing your own work.

Honestly i find it easier to yank the motor out for my cars. That way i can do all the other maintenance stuff when it is out. Customer cars ...wouldnt know...not a mechanic 😅

I like removing them too. For other tasks, like head gaskets I also do that. (That's actually my last two uploads on this channel)

Question for you brotha, I replaced my clutch a few days ago. Video was amazing so thank you! I rewatched it to put everything back together smoothly. I came into an issue where when I was bleeding my clutch pressure wasn’t coming back. Still drives and shift fine! I bled the clutch and verified there weren’t any bubbles. I figure I’d have to bleed it a little longer to establish more pressure. But now I’m experiencing some clicking/ticking that seems to be coming from the clutch/ clutch pedal. When ever I press it in it quiets down, when I’m at idle you can hear it and when I add RPM’s it’s significantly louder. I’ve been trying to do some research but come up unsuccessful. Do you know the problem I’m experiencing or what is the cause/ fix? I appreciate your help!
@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors 8 месяцев назад
I don't think I've ever come across that problem before. Usually sounds associated with change in RPM come from the engine bay. That's strange, I'd have to hear it and dig into it if I were diagnosing it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. It's been a while since I bled the clutch master on a subaru but on some vehicles, after the air is bled out. You have to pump the pedal like 30-40 times with the bleeder closed and the pressure starts to feel normal again.

Why would it have so much metal on the transmission drain plug ?

Nice job. Just curious; how long in real time (for you) to do that job? Boy I sure hope the owner got some lessons on how to drive a clutch!
@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors Год назад
I hope they take it easy haha. It takes me about 3 hours to do this one. It's a little easier than the older models because you don't have to mess around with the downpipe on the turbo.

is that a bones red bearing in the clutch? or did you go with the bones ceramic

Not sure, it's OEM if that helps.

Did you put loctite on them flywheel bolts? Did you reuse the bolts? Did the exact same thing as you did. I out fx350 clutch with light flywheel and there’s quite the chatter when decelerating. Maybe because my synchros are going bad or something?
@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors Год назад
I torqued the flywheel and pressure plate to factory spec and did not use any thread lockers. Not sure what your issue might be, if it didn't do that before then perhaps something is up with the clutch disc or pressure plate.

How much does a replacement usually go for in your state Atleast?
@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors Год назад
It’s between 1500 and 2000, depending on if it needs a flywheel as well (I fix the cars and am separated from the billing so I’m not a hundred percent sure on that one).
@SupremeHeros
@SupremeHeros Год назад
@@SkillCollectors thanks for the quick response. Yeah most of the prices I’ve gotten here from calling around are close around that make lol my friend who’s does replacements on other cars said he’d give it a go on my subie so might go that route and save a little lol 😅

@@SupremeHeros No prob. It's not too bad on these newer subies. Not having to deal with the down pipe really speeds things up.

@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors Год назад
In my opinion, that's a lot of unnecessary work just to remove the transmission. It's not hard to remove these, Subaru actually makes it pretty easy assuming there's no rust/nothing seized but you're going to end up spending more time removing and installing the powertrain.
