Adding 'Slime' or other puncture sealant is a common practice especially if youhave experienced issues in the past. It's a simple task if you have the right tools... the Park Tool VC-1 valve core removal tool is an awesome tool to keep in the toolbox.

Great , useful information, so thank you for that! However, the whole thing could fit in a 2 min video ;)

Cool. The middle of that tool is a 5mm wrench for presta valve extenders which you sometimes need for aero rims.

Confirm that some valve cores on Presta valves are NOT removable???
@markmikasa5630
@markmikasa5630 4 года назад
Yes some are not removable especially on stock bike valve stems. Do a search on youtube and there is a way to still remove the core stem, but i heard that sometimes when you do that the little nut on top of the stem sometimes breaks or doesn't go back on correctly and then you need a new tube. I'm just waiting to get a flat then change out my tube to a removable presta valve tube. Not worth the effort.

Great... and I see this tool is even on sale at 60% on ProBikeKit but these idiot didn't tell me I would need this tool to put put the latex I bought or even just remove my current valve extention and put it on my new Tubular tire so I'm stuck having to go to the shop and can't service myself after 2 weeks of shipping delay. No way now I'll pay for shipping and another 10$ of handling fee at the customs (-_-). I can't believe here this little 10g aluminium tool is so expensive, just cause of the "Parktool" name.

You can buy off brand too. My bike came with a tiny metal valve core removal tool.

Can this be done with pliers do you think? I'd prefer to save the weight/money/space on this tool if I can.

I got the VC-1 for the Schrader valve capability, but there is a video showing how chain breaker tools have a slot that fits right onto a Presta removable valve core. A neat little hack there if you take a small chain tool along on longer unsupported rides or something. I have unscrewed a Presta core with a needle nose pliers as well, but made sure to have a piece of cloth covering the valve in case of slips. It didn't seem to hurt the valve core at all. Considering how removing/installing a valve core should hopefully be done infrequently, you can probably get by without VC-1 if only dealing with Presta. Schrader done with a very fine needle nose might be too sketchy on that delicate end, though I did try once, haha. Just couldn't find small enough needle nose.
