In this video, I show a way to bring a bicycle pump back to life by re-greasing it. I also give information for fixing different issues at the end of the video.
My other repairs: goo.gl/McrESF
My projects: goo.gl/AyS4oO
I have spent the better part of five years volunteering and working in a non-profit bicycle shop. I no longer work there, but the skills and knowledge I picked up are numerous.
In a non-profit setting, there can be a heavy emphasis on reusing and thrifting. Those goals coupled with my disposition for fixing things, gave me the ability to fix a great many tools of the trade. One of those tools that got incessant use is the bicycle pump. Many pumps would, with wear, need repair and that is the basis of my knowledge.

As mentioned before, O-Ring Grease, Silicone Grease, Di-Electric Grease (which is Silicone based) is a better choice for O-Rings as Petroleum-based lubricants eats up Rubber O-Rings. I use “Parker” O-Ring Lubricant or Di-Electric Ignition Grease or Dow-Corning DC4 (Now Dupont Molykote 4) as it will not dissolve the o-ring.

Spot on! Many thanks. The bit about WD-40 was insightful. I believe it might be behind clogging the shaft with loosened gunk and rust. Multiple applications of grease also help pick out the stray gunk that the turpentine doesn't pick out.

WD stands for water displacement. It is not an oil. It was designed to keep moisture away from space rockets so that did not accumulate ice on them and did not become too heavy. It is not a lubricant by any means. Yes it does lubricate the bolts to open them up, but what happens next is not important when it comes to rusty bolts ready to be discarded anyway. I learned this the hard way by once spraying my bicycle chain with this wd and was very happy with the results despite the voice in the back of my head saying, people told you not to do it, sooo, on next day, literally, it took only a day, I look at the chain, and guess what? It is all spotty with rust patches. So yeah, that what the wd-40 does, it has its own very useful use but not applicable to every situation in the world.

Thanks for this video! While my issue was with a different pump that was leaking pressure around the top, this video facilitated my being able disassemble my pump. In my case, the internal piston-end had come mostly unscrewed from the piston shaft. I was able to clean it and re-attach it, adding a bit of Teflon plumbers' tape at the threads for a better seal. And since I had it apart, it's all lubed up again with Teflon grease per your instructions and seems to both hold pressure and be a bit smoother. Thanks!

Thanks buddy. Got a Blackburn track pump, more than 10 years old and it had failed just like in your vid. I'd opened it and couldn't see anything to fix - but with a clean and some grease all good again. Power of RU-vid!

I liked your video because the construction of the pump despite the different handle and color of the stem is exactly as one of mine. I took it apart before I looked up your video. It had bits in grease, so I was not sure if it was on purpose or not. I opened it up because it was not pumping anything. After watching your video, I concluded that the gritty bits where not by design and wiped them off, and I took the rubber ring off. I was absolutely sure I had a syringe somewhere with thermal paste for CPU but could not find it, so after cleaning off the ring, I just added a hand cream. I looked it up, the main ingredient was glycerine aka solidoil. Anyway, when it comes how you describe how the grease should be applied, if done the way you advise, the grease applied to the bottom of the rig does not do anything, but the one applied to the grove of the ring does fill the important bit between the ring and the plunger but applying it excessively is counter productive because it gets removed upon insertion back into stem / cylinder / column, call how you like it. So general advice, once you removed ring and wiped everything. I used a holy sock to do that btw, first to wipe the ring and plunger, then put the sock on the plunger and stuck it in the column. Anyway, so back to general advice. Grease the groove of the ring to accommodate the ring but put the excess inside the column. I clearly noticed how pump regained ability to push air as the grease got distributed along the inside of the column. Pardon my poor inglish.

Thank you. I put loads of grease under and over the O ring but it is still sort of too easy to push and not really maintaining pressure. Either I have a leak somewhere (more grease, perhaps, on more joints) or perhaps I need a new O ring.

I have a cheap back trails floor pump. It has no lubricating hole and when I disassemble there is no oil or grease on the o ring ;it is dry. It has started to vibrate like it needs grease. Is it throw away? I guess I can replace The o ring and give it a try.

There's a one way valve in the base of the pump. Usually some kind of ball and hole mechanism. It's unfortunately at the heart of the operation so the whole pump usually requires disassembly.

When I try to pump air..back air pressure from tyre tube will lift the pumping handle i.e one way valve is not working, where in pump it's located?how to solve this?
@betterdoneright
@betterdoneright 5 лет назад
Usually the one way valve is located near the bottom of the pump. The mechanisms vary and are difficult to repair. I've found that some pumps can have their one way valve temporarily blown open, and you have to push against the presser quickly do get the valve to function normally.

Hi, i have a o ring that just seems way too loose as it just goes into tube and does nothing so i figure replace that or put a expanded behind it like a oil ring on a piston. BUT how does the 1 way action work? Is there a valve in the bottom that need servicing? and how to do that please?
@betterdoneright
@betterdoneright 5 месяцев назад
From what I have seen, there is typically a ball check-valve in the bottom of the stand part of the pump that lets air in. As for servicing it, I would just try to make it function normally if you're able to figure out how it might normally work.

Hey, me again. I have run into the same issue, this time I cant resolve my problem the way I have been. I have found out the problem isnt in thr hose but somewhere in the pump. It is resisting from putting out any air. It doesnt even get passed the chamber. Have you had any problems like this one? Note: when I use my pump it isnt for a bike and I max it out [160 psi])
@betterdoneright
@betterdoneright 6 лет назад
Alright, let me see. I used to use one of my pumps for a compressed air gun that I made out of PVC pipe, years ago, and I too would max out my pump. My guess is that you have debris in your pump that is clogging the valve in the pump, or that the valve itself is defective. One iteration I have seen for the valve design is a loose hard plastic ball that clogs a hole one direction (like air being forced back into the pump), but lets air pass in the other direction. Perhaps with your pump something had broken to allow the valve to lock air going out of the pump as well as in? Let me know what you find! I'll be here.
@saberboi1526
@saberboi1526 6 лет назад
I still dont know what causes it, but I came up with some sort of solution, it may not be the best idea but it ended up working. I filled the chamber up with hot water and put the pump back in, because I was thinking that because water isnt compressible maybe itd work because of the forces put on it. It did but Im sure Im going to pay for any moisture left inside of it. I still dont know what causes this problem in my pump but I plan on getting a pump with a higher PSI rating in case that is the problem here. The only real consequence I noticed immediately after putting the water in and flushing it out was that it became harder to max it out. At least its working.

@betterdoneright

The pump in the video I am sure is no longer made. There are a lot of good pumps out there, they're just a little more expensive starting around $30. Brand names are really good in this case.

Just be sure to use a silycon base grease like Dow33. Oil base grease and wd-40 will deteriorate the oring and it will need to be replaced very quickly

Probably all vary depending on what pump you have. Best to take the O ring to the hardware store and compare which one you need to buy
@drengskap

Silicone grease is best for O-rings. Other effective cleaning agents include petrol/gasoline, engine degreaser spray, and brake cleaner. WD-40 isn't really an oil - it is a cleaning agent and water displacer (hence the name), and only contains a small proportion of lubricant.

@CyclingLifePT
@CyclingLifePT 3 года назад
So, the issue was inside the pump "valve", i opened it all up and there was a rubber sealant out of place. I've put it in the correct place, assembled the pump together and it's good as new now. I have a CrankBrothers Power Pump with gauge.

What kind of grease is used to stop the grinding sound.
@betterdoneright
@betterdoneright 2 года назад
I can't think of a grease you can't use. Maybe don't use animal fat, but that would still work until it goes bad. Automotive grease is a good place you start. You don't need anything waterproof or anything like that. Keep it affordable -- you don't need the best grease. You'll also probably have plenty to re-grease with.

@@betterdoneright I used lithium grease which is better than anything else. Never use WD-40

@hopenavajo1391

@@betterdoneright It'll only harden the o rings and force you to get a new one. The only best one to use is lithium grease,not silicone.

My tube got sliced off. Is there a repair or just have to buy a new one?
@betterdoneright
@betterdoneright 2 года назад
Yep, that's called a Schrader valve and if a bike is ridden for a long while with the tire pressure too low, then that can happen. A new tube is your fix!
@nihonbunka
@nihonbunka 2 года назад
The tire tube or the pump tube. If it is the pump tube then it should be possible to take apart the joint, remove the stub left in the joint, and then make the pump tube a bit shorter.

Is the pump handle hard to push down, or easy? If it's really easy, then the seal in your pump needs to be replaced. If it's hard to push down, then you probably have a functioning seal, but perhaps the hose has a blockage.

With enough it'll probably work. WD-40 does have some silicone in it, and enough of that will lube things up. Just won't last as long. Much like removing grease from a ballbearing.
