Today, we show you how to repair a broken bike chain without having to buy any specialized tools! This trick applies to bikes, scooters, etc and is quite easy to do at home!
► YOU WILL NEED
- 1 nut: to avoid side bending, the inside diameter of the nut should only be SLIGHTLY bigger than the diameter of the pins in the chain to repair. The depth of the nut should also be long enough for the pin to be pushed out.
- 1 nail: the nail used here is made from hardened steel (concrete nail). The diameter of the nail should be SMALLER than the diameter of the pin within the chain, so that the pin can be pushed out without any damages and that the nail does not get stuck.
- magnets: those have been recycled from an old Hard drive
- 1 vice: if you mention that this is specialized equipment, then get a life!
► DISCLAIMER
YES, using a chain breaker is the right tool for the job.
YES, it only costs a few dollars so is not a huge investment.
HOWEVER, I refuse to buy any tools that I will only use once every 10 years (if I have a viable alternative that is) for 2 reasons:
* Next time I need it (in 10 years’ time), I bet I can’t find it anymore
* Or even worse, I could even end up buying it twice forgetting I already had one… somewhere...
Now feel free to comment below and argue about how “using the right tools for the job is an absolute MUST” but let me ignore your verbiage. I completely assume my decision to simplify my life and avoid being surrounded by clutter, thanks!

A portable bench vice is a specialized tool most people don't own. If you had used a hammer to drive the nail and remove the rivet that would be use of a common tool. I live in an apartment and while I guess a few people in apartments maybe have portable bench vices for some reason, I have never met anyone who does. A portable bench vice costs around $30; a bike chain tool costs around $8. (Magnets powerful to hold a nail or nut in place while its reacting to the pressure of the vice also seems uncommon.)

Fair comment, however did not pay more than 10 bucks for my vice

for some it will be helpful, for others it will not. Almost every DIY guy has a bench vice, but chain tool is not that common. It is not only the matter of price, but availability. For me - it was perfect.

Well, that is a great advice. I just broke my chain and tomorrow we have a holiday so I can't buy the chain tool. Thank you.
