This can be one of the most destructive plumbing leaks in a home 😬😬
Pineholes in copper piping seem to happen regularly now. Mostly from homes build in the 80s. This one was built in 1973 and I was pretty surprised by the issue. I had renovated both of these bathrooms 2 years ago. Each on I had gutted to the studs & had full access to plumbing. I did not see any issues with the copper at the time
One of the main reasons pinholes occur is from Acidic water.
pH levels causing deep and narrow pitting, resulting in pipe failure.
And the reason I say homes in the 80's are more likely to have this issue is because builders begin using thinner gauge piping. Instead of use the thick Type L copper used in older homes, they used type M copper. Therefore, corrosion can & will happen faster
I've seen full neighborhoods where every home had to replace all of their water lines do to pinhole leaks
I fought this installation much more than I should have 😆
If you clear the lines of water....you should have a much easier time
This was an emergency call, and I didn't have all my equipment on hand.
Here's the breakdown order of the fix:
1. Cut copper cleanly with a tubing cutter - (this one from milwaukee is pretty awesome - amzn.to/457b8A4
2. Sand down fittings & copper piping - sanding clothe -amzn.to/3OEdNfc
3. Apply flux to both piping & fittings - amzn.to/3QohuqQ
4. Set couplings & pipe
5. Heat fitting & apply solder - map gas torch amzn.to/3KoErpN
6. Be sure to have a flame guard - amzn.to/3YiPvKN
If you have trouble with water like I did during heating of pipes, unfortunately you will have to remove everything & start again 😁

good realistic video- I did this type of work for many years. Soldering where water keeps running towards the heat sucks. The bread and other tricks didn't seem to help much. Even though many plumbers won,t use sharkbite type fitting in a wall, I had god luck with them with pex, copper and cpvc. A coupling with a shut-off works wonders on pipes that won't stop leaking water.

Might be your best BRT video yet! Excellent advice on shutting-off water while away from home, water heaters should be turned down as low as possible, or even shut-off during extended absences.

Pack bread into pipe. It will hold back water until done soldering and will dissolve and flush out with pressure .

I had a pin hole leak in my copper from the second floor bathroom into the garage. Fixed it just like you did. Then I had another pin hole leak coming from the second floor master bathroom. I had just finished a complete bathroom remodel so I was feeling pretty stupid for not upgrading the plumbing in the master bathroom to Pex like everyone suggested. So now I’m doing a complete repipe with Pex-A. In the process I found yet another slow leak. I will never return to copper.

Do you think pex A will last longer than copper? Lol
@samfredo8140

Actually in my case, yes. The problem appears to be the water. I had a plumber tell me that the water is causing copper lines to leak throughout the area.

@@blipblop92 had a cooper refrigerator run no older than 20 years develope pin hole leaks on both ends. Barring being chewed on by a rodent (always a possibility), pex will outperform that.

@@samfredo8140: it’s often rust in the hot water tank that works it’s way into the copper piping and causes corrosion and pinhole leaks. At that point, it’s too late to think that replacing the tank will solve the issue. Time to replace all the lines in the house.

Watching you struggling with water in the lines, which is one of the most frustrating situations when soldering, I learned a little trick. I've been an HVAC mechanic for over 30 years and have run into this dozens of times. So the way I deal with this is pretty simple. I use unions. Where you are joining 2 pieces of pipe, instead of a slip coupling, a union allows you to elevate one side just long enough to hit the 1st half of the union. Having the pipe open to the air also allows for the water in the line to boil off. When you are done, do the same process on the other half of the pipe. Then, simply put the union together and tighten it down. No more leak. I hope you find this suggestion helpful. Good video, by the way. Thanks, Scott

So much reality to this video. Water in pipes is always a challenge. A compression fitting could have been used instead of soldering.

Once the water is gone, simply clean the pinhole up with a fitting brush, apply flux, heat the dap a little solder and the hole is fixed.

A shop vac to blow the line clean reallly helps. Might have to put s smaller pipe to suck out the H20.

Do you do consultations for payment? I am fixing to do a backsplash in a bar area for my wife. It is my first tile job and there are some issues with the countertops not being level and also some layout concerns. I would gladly pay for a FaceTime consultation and advice. Thanks.

pin hole leak just get a slip coupling and slip it over the pin hole and sweat it on, no need to replace a hole section
