Wall wart AC/DC power adapter plug prong broke off in wall. Disclaimer: Wall transformers must be completely drained of power before opening, since they can store energy long after unplugging from power source! ! This video shows how a 12 volt, 3 Amp AC/DC power supply can be fixed after a little investigation. Why throw it out when a simple solution could be found saving time and money to get a new one.

4:10… I noticed when you plugged it back in it sparked. It should not do that.

Good job dude, thanks for a short and to the point video. To others trying this out on your own: Certain power adapters can be quite dangerous once you open them up since you can get a 400V shock if you put your meaty parts on the wrong side of the circuit, it's relatively low energy but still dangerous and very painful (took a 200V shock once, do not recommend). This is specially true for 'el cheapo' adapters with generic labeling (like the one on the video). Let's just say that manufacturers skip certain components which are not absolutely necessary in order to save money and time at the cost of a more dangerous circuit. Brand names usually avoid these practices but don't risk your health wantonly. One possible but not recommended way to avoid this is leaving the device unplugged for a REALLY long time, this allows the stored charge to fade and makes the device safer (safer, not safe) to handle. If you really wanna do it right, look for bigclive's videos on discharging capacitors.

Very good point! I did ground across the terminals quickly looking for a discharge, but nothing seen; after all it actually had been unplugged for a while since the one lead was not connected. But safety first, and yes they do store and can certainly keep a charge! I wish now I had mentioned that in the video. Thank you very much for bringing this up. I just wanted to show that one should not be so quick to throw out a perfectly good power converter. Even one of these modern noisy (RFI on Ham bands) switching ones.

Nice I tried that with this light lamp fixture thing, but I guess I got to pry the whole adapter open. I didn’t know you could open it up that way because I didn’t find any screws or anything but I’ll try it that way. Thanks for searching deeper.👍

Going to attempt removing the broken prong from my iPhone charger from the outlet. Can I just switch off the power from the room from the breaker or do I have to switch off the whole main breaker? I’m going to use rubber gloves and my plier with rubber handles
@BobCash

To be safe, you should turn off the power to the room. Since you are only touching one prong with rubber gloves and rubber handled pliers, you wont create a short. That's all I did to pull it out easily.

This is a slightly unrelated question but I broke off phone charger prongs and they’re stuck into my outlet in my room. The thing is, I did this 4 years ago and like a idiot I’ve ignored it. I plan on having a electrician come look at it sometime next month but now I’m paranoid a fire will start. I know it’s been fine this long but I just wanted to know how likely a fire would start and if people have commonly left prongs in their outlets before with no fires. I need to ease my mind because this is worrying me

The best thing to do is turn off your wall power, then carefully pull each prong out of the wall separately with a rubber handled piers. Don't make any contact between prongs. Or have someone do it if you are unsure.

Thank you for the help but my fan's prong got stucked in the outlet and i got it out and when it went out is it safe to put it back inside the plug 🔌 of the fan?

I don't know what kind of plug you have? I was just showing that you can re-solder the prong back into a power adapter. Always use gloves and tools with rubber handles. And, always only when unplugged from power source.

Did you shut power off? My neighbor has a prong stuck in the polorizing side. I’m wondering if I can pull it out without shutting power off? There’s plenty to grab onto. Thanks
@BobCash
@BobCash 8 месяцев назад
Yes, it's best to shut the power off. But, if you have gloves and a rubber handled pliers, you can pull out just the one prong if your careful.
@nonelost1

I strongly recommend to shut the power off first. And to make doubly sure the power is cut off, plug a radio or a lamp into the other receptacle to make sure power is cut to that outlet.

The only way is to use a Soldering iron. They can be bought very cheap.
