Perfect instuctions. Thank you so much for posting. Saved myself a few quid in labour. A bit fiddly & a bit of an expensive 'kettle element', but yes - replaced my duff element as per your instructions & it's working again nice & dandy. Thanks again. Brilliant stuff.

Glad it helped - after 37 years of teaching botany to naughty 17 year old boys it seemed perfectly manageable to me!! All replacement caravan spares seem to cost a fortune. I just replaced a rooflight (not filmed) and the dome was going to be an eyewatering price.... fortunately www.olearymotorhomes.co.uk/contact-us-2-w.asp came to my rescue with one in a water-damaged box

Remember, every van is a bit different so access can be an issue. Best wishes with the job and best of luck saving up over £100 for an element that probably costs £5 to build. Anyway, I'm glad it gives you the confidence to have a go. Ours has worked faultlessly since ..... mind you, the pump gave way soon after, so that's another video! All the best.

if you ever have to do something like this again or anyone else does this. instead of chopping the wires of the plug from the van loom and joining to the chockbox you would be better to cut the wire from the old element and joining this to the chock box then connecting the wire from the new element to the other end of the choc box, this way you have not cut any wires from the van at all and still have the three pin connector on the wire. if you ever need to reset your element say for turning the water heater on with no water in the tank you can often turn off the wall switch then disconnect the plug/connector (three pin one, the one that you have from the element that you have cut) leave apart for about 20 seconds then reconnect and turn on the switch and often it will have reset and your heater element will work again. nice video, thank you i just hate it when you go to some wiring and its been hacked or cut in to and have the connectors missing can i just ask why you cut ogg the plugs in the first place as it seemed to be the correct one on the end of the cable thanks

Thank you for watching. The replacement did not have a connector & the originals were crimped into place - I had tried for weeks to find a replacement connector to make it plug & play but all the suppliers said that because the element has a relatively short life if holidaying in hard-water areas it is best to cut it off and leave something that will speed up connection next time..... they suggested either choc-box or a 3-pin garden-tools plug/socket - they suggest it may only last 2 or 3 years in their experience.

So could’ve been the five amp fuse rather than the element blowing ??
@pcollingridge
@pcollingridge 2 года назад
No, the fuse would not cause an earth-leak. The earth-trip is a standard safety design in elements under water - cannot run the risk of a live wire touching the case and sending 240v down the pipes into the shower!

IF I could just point out, if you use "Imperial" sockets, the 5.5mm is 7/32" and the 7mm is 9/32", so no need to panic if you don't have a 5.5mm or 7mm socket.

Thanks, I can't remember when I last used imperial sockets other than a 9/16 for the central blade -bolt of every Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine!

The truma hot water service should really be renamed to The Trauma hot water disservice. I wasted money on one in 2015 then replaced the tank that split then replaced the whole hot water service thinking I may have just got a dud then I discovered after replacing two more tanks that they are completely fucked with a lifespan of one to two years and they will not honour their shit dysfunctional rubbish...

I agree that they over-charge on everything... but so do Thetford. I'll always take the money-saving route to a solution! Thanks for watching
