When I was young in the 70’s, these chairs were “a dime a dozen”… almost everyone I knew had one, or similar to it. I can’t believe how much they are asking for them brand new 😳 Back then.. Pier 1 was a pretty “reasonable” store, believe it or not, cuz now they are pretty expensive. They carried these chairs, along with incense, beads… great memories of all the hippie stuff we 🥰 loved.. Beautiful job 👍

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS POST!! 👏🏆 I just inherited my grandmother’s peacock chair and stool that my dad gave her in the early 70’s. I have literally been obsessed with this chair my entire life and cannot wait to restore this and bring back its former glory 🤗

You did such a great job! I got two of that same EXACT peacock chair also from Facebook marketplace for $150 total. 🤯 They currently look exactly as yours first did- all grayed. Thank you so much for posting the video so now I can see the full potential of what they can be!

I would say for $30 you got a bargain. You've done a beautiful restoration job and it obvious the chair has found a good home. I remember in the '70's you could pick up a chair like this at Cost Plus for a reasonable price--because they bought in bulk, it kept shipping costs down. Have any of your friends been calling you "Morticia?"

Looks great! I don’t think I would use polyurethane on it though. That will crack and chip off incompletely in time. You won’t be able to remove it. Instead I would use Tung Oil. It will harden and get semi-shiny with 2 coats. It won’t dry out and chip off in 20 years. You got a great chair! They used to be really inexpensive at Pier 1. They often looked a little dried out. Yours is better!

The chair turned out to be gorgeous. Just as a technical note on your video though - I had to turn the sound as loud as it would go to hear you. THEN when the music came on I had to turn it down immediately! Maybe there is a microphone you could wear?

Hi there.. Great video! BTW what was the interval between applying the seal coat and polyurethane spray? How long you waited out?
@diylifewithmichelle5450
@diylifewithmichelle5450 Год назад
I waited about a week. You probably don't need to actually wait that long, it was just that it was a week later when I was able to set aside some time to do it!

It depends on what platform you decide to sell it on and where you live. For example, in my local marketplace, if I sold it on Facebook Marketplace, I could sell this for around $500-$600. I actually sold this on Etsy, and offered shipping, which allowed me to sell it for $1400. From this I had to take out the cost of the peacock chair and the materials to repair it ($90), the cost of shipping ($380) and Etsy fees ($116). It still gave me a profit of $814 though (as opposed to the approx $500 profit I would have made if I sold it locally - which would still have been awesome!), so I think it was totally worth it.

How did you repair the actual seat area. You don’t explain that part. I only see you preserving the wood with stain and sealants.
@diylifewithmichelle5450
@diylifewithmichelle5450 Год назад
I'm assuming you're referring to the front part of the seat that had the wonky trim? If so, that was held in place by small nails. I took out the nails holding it in place, repositioned it so it was straight, and put the nails back in.

How long did it have a chemical smell?
@diylifewithmichelle5450
@diylifewithmichelle5450 Год назад
It only had a chemical smell briefly after I applied the Seal Coat, but once the Polyurethane was applied and had dried, it didn't seem to have a smell. I was also doing everything outside, and had it stored in my garage for a couple of days after I applied the Polyurethane, so that may have given it time to air out, if there was a slight smell afterwards. Hope this helps!

Was that all dirt or some white paint?
@diylifewithmichelle5450
@diylifewithmichelle5450 Год назад
It was mainly dirt as it had been sitting outside for a while (it hadn't been painted and still had the beautiful natural colored wicker under all that grime).

Any suggestions to clean the chair if you do not have a lower washer
@diylifewithmichelle5450
@diylifewithmichelle5450 11 месяцев назад
Hmm... that's a good question. The power washer gave me really good results because of the pressure of the water, so I'm not sure that you'd get the same results using different methods. You could try washing it down with something like Dawn dish soap and hot water with a scrubbing brush, but you'd be walking a fine line between getting off the dirt and not wrecking the wicker. Otherwise, I know that at a lot of hardware stores you can rent power washers - that might be an option.
