Quality inflatable kayaks are remarkably durable, but you can still get a hole in them! This video shows you how easy it is to repair a hole in an inflatable kayak.

lightly sand the area around the leak lightly with 800 grid sandpaper and clean it with acetone so the glue has more surface to stick too, do that also with the patch (sand it until the shine is gone). Some glues fuse the patch and the boat together that is even better, depends on the fabric of the boat and patch and the glue used, they dissolve the PVC.

Ken, wouldn't it have been much more fun to go to some exotic location and damage the kayak out in the field? Maybe run into a marlin head-on, scrape a reef, portage though a bed thorns? Then fix it while still floating on the water, perhaps while paddling through a rapid? You really took the easy route on this one! LOL.

I really enjoy your videos! Thank you! A few things that can help for repair based on my experience -find a shaded and cooler place to do the repair in summer. -Don't stress and take your time (my first repairs were very stressful and not well done) -add a small paint brush, a pen and small pair of scissors in the kit -use the small brush to apply the glue evenly -after setting the patch, use the handle of the brush to push any air bubble out and to apply a lot of pressure -you mentioned it already but it caused me some troubles : glue dries significantly faster when it's hot. -if you have already opened the glue, or if the repair kit is old, check that the glue is not dried out before leaving on a trip. Hope this can help someone out there not to make the same mistakes I made 😅

Good job on the repair. I've had to do this twice on my iRocker paddle board. I followed a similar technique to yourself and using the lepage contact cement. It worked really well and I've had no problems so far. I've also used the contact cement for my EVA foam deck padding that has started to peel up.

The kayak took it remarkably well. Good material in it! The procedure is fairly simple - once you've done it once or twice. Done here the way it would be done on the water, which is what one might often have to do. Otherwise, as you said, you would somehow mark the place so you did not end up spreading more glue than required. I generally use a cutter or the scissors on my Swiss Army Knife to get the right-size patch for the hole; it's just more precise. Otherwise, you use what you have on you at that moment. The self-adhesive patch could last for years (tested on my own boat, both on the inside and on the outside); still, to stay on the safe side - and also for extra peace of mind -, one can replace that patch when back home with one applied with glue, which is supposed to last for ever. Have a very nice week!

Could you do another video and this time drill the hole in the drop-stitch floor?
@gladancampo

After hundreds of times folding/unfolding my sea eagle razorlite, a pinhole leak appeared along the fold crease. Instant patch worked well. But my glued patch work was botched (user error), so still leaks. Nonetheless I took it out on the water with the leak and was able to paddle 4+ hours without noticing any drop in pressure (feel test, not gauge reading). Will give the glue/patch another shot and try the sanding method mentioned previously. See if that helps bond better, as well as a newer tube of glue.

Another great video Ken, looks like you done a better job than whoever put together the floor of my Sea Eagle Explorer!! You mention that jaggy or square edges could lift up and become a weak point and thats exactly how my floor came new with edges sticking up and that was my concern of being a weak point, but apparently they fall within Sea Eagle’s accepted standards so time will tell. Would be great to see a follow up video in 6 months or so and do a pressure test over a few days to see how the repair holds up over time 👍

Hi Ken, great video as always, it's a joy to watch each time again! I always use a little brush to put the glue on the material, and before I put on the patch I draw a circle around the puncture with a marker. Most people tend to use too much glue, which works contra-productive in the end. Grtz from the Netherlands.

I thought many leaks on inflatables are along seams or joints, and/or due to overinflation. I would like to know how to patch a leak along a seam. And, I noticed recently a lot of the repair kits that come with boats, do not include the glue, they just come with patches in colors that match the fabric color. But, thanks for the good information here, it’s great to see someone demonstrate this.

Hi, your videos are amazing. I'm looking at these two kayaks. which one do you think is better in this price range? Quest Cayuga Inflatable Tandem Kayak or Goplus Inflatable Kayak, 2-Person Kayak Set for Adults with 507 LBS Weight Capacity

I would recommend always having a new unopened tube of glue available. If you open a tube and use it to repair something then depending upon the type of glue it is it will go off in the tube once it has been opened. So the next time you want to use it, it's a solid lump. I had a leak at the seam on my Tomahawk, so I bought glue to repair it and used the patches that came with it. The repair worked for a bit but because it was right on one of the folds it failed after a few weeks. When I went to repair it again I found the glue had gone off and had to cut the other end of the tube to get more out. After that it was junk. And yes, the repair failed a second time. So I bought a roof rack and a hard shell kayak.

It's actually surprisingly easy! I once put a hole in my Trak Kayak by running hard up on an oyster bed. I used 'Tear-Aid' to keep it water tight for the rest of the trip, and then put a real patch on it when I got home - same way that I patched this kayak.

Well...on my last inflatable dinghy, the puncture like that I was able to fix by throwing enough glue at it, but then the seam ripped in a hardly accessible spot (where the bottom canvas and the front right tube meet. Also my previous dinghy (a Honwave) also got apart at the seam and I wasn't able to fix it. Asked around for professional help and was met by a unanimous: "we don't do that with PVC boats", sorry. So I bought a rotomolded sit-in kayak.😊

@BoomVang
@BoomVang 10 месяцев назад
Punctures almost never happen because the fabric has give under air pressure. Most air leaks come from air valves, which can be fixed with techniques found on internet. Even seam leaks are more common than punctures, especially with age. They sometimes are fixed with proper glues that melt the fabric and patch together. Patch kits have dumbed-down contact cement because prissy California banned the effective stuff. It is available on internet, but don't buy before needed since it expires fast.

This feels like a way to take money off people who are new to kayaking. There may be a handful of people who can realize an actual benefit from from this kind of boat, but I don’t imagine there are many of them, and I suspected most people would be better off with either a dedicated SOT, or SIS kayak, with the focus that comes from being just one thing.

I keep my sea eagle razorlite in my car pretty much from March to November. If i see a fun river or lake, I’m playing hooky and paddling. Can’t wait to get a serious hard shell sea kayak one day….but this inflatable has got me hooked on kayaking. I have taken that thing on lakes in Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and even the Gulf of Mexico. Flat water oriented, but it can tackle some rougher stuff too.
